View Full Version : Chron:Does the play of Texans linebacker Ryans concern you?

"He's getting more help now than he has in the past," Kubiak said. "Back then he was having to make all those tackles but I think Zac (Diles) has become a fine, fine player. So, he's taking a lot of pressure and made a lot of plays from that standpoint. We're playing better up front right now than we've played in a while around here. So, he's got a lot more help but believe me, he's still playing well and I expect some big things out of him the rest of the way."

I must admit that I have been a little concerned over the last few weeks. Not only are his numbers down but it doesn't seem like he is flying all over the field like he has been. Something has happened and he is not letting on.

And even if the above was true wouldn't that leave Ryans freed up to blitz and get some sacks or drop back for some picks?

Ryans has been a non factor to this point.

Someone before mentioned that he had to gain a bunch of weight this season and that has slowed him down. If thats the case start feeding him steamed rice or something, I want the old Demeco back.

Anyone who complains about Demeco needs to be shoved off the TEXAN wagon and not allowed back on!! PULLLLEEEESSSEEE!!! Demeco is just fine! Maybe he's just settling back and allowing his teammates to do their job, instead of him having to do it all. PLUS, he's been banged up, and he needs to back off a little, IF we want to have him around for a few more years, which I do!!! He's a LEADER!! He's out there shouting at the D all the time!! Leave Meco alone!!:kingkong:

I think he has been playing hurt for most of the year and that is most of the reason for the downturn in his play.

This is what I am thinking. I just hope he is not pulling a Merriman and jeopardize his career.

His ankle is injured ("rolled ankle"---sprained ligament)............not his knee joint (Merriman --- total instability, complete ligament tears). With that said ankle injury + increased weight + no rest = decreased performance.

Various thoughts.

One reason he had such sick stats his rookie year was that the defense was really really bad as opposed to normal bad. Means lots of linebacker tackles.

Other factors in reduced tackles includes:

1. His ankle is bothering him. He won't say that, but it is. Check out the picture below that I asked Andy to take after the last game that shows his ankles. He was walking pretty slow.
2. Our smallish defensive tackles can't keep players off of him.
3. Defense's time of possession is down because the offense stays on the field.

halle-freaking-lujah I think someone stumbled on why the Texans have been winning or close to winning the last 5 games. Keep the defense off the field is the best way for him to rest and keep our small ends (other than Mario) and horrible corner (you know who) off the field.
Great insight they should pay you to right a column or something.

We should have given him a rest, let him split time in either the Detroit or Cincy game with Bentley. Now its too late, we've got some tough teams ahead of us and if he rests it is a blow to our team if we're still in the playoff hunt. Later in the season if we aren't in the playoff hunt then we should let him rest and get ready for next year but if we are still in the hunt he's playing.

The problem is that he doesn't want to rest. He has the mindset that if the Texans are playing, then he wants to be out there on the field. That is both good, and bad.

Saying Ryans has been a non-factor so far is a travesty, IMO. He contributes on so many levels. Dunta may be the backbone of the defense, but DeMeco is most certainly the eyes and ears.

Remember, he was playing injured last year towards the end of the season and we saw the same kind of production from him as we do this year when injured. Apparently an injured DeMeco is still better then a healthy Bentley. If I was Richard Smith or Kubiak I would've rest DeMeco during the Lions and Bengals game.... too late for that now.

I'm just glad we have Zac Diles, last year when DeMeco was hurt who did we have? Danny Clark and Morlon freakin Greenwood.... :thud:

Demeco is not playing with the explosion and quickness that he had been playing with...

Personally I think it's because of his weight, but hisankle may also be slightly tweaked...

If his ankle has been hurting him that may explain the weight gain....

And our DT's aren't smallish...They are average size four 4-3 linemen and Demeco is average size for a 4-3 MLB...

its a bit of a transitional year for DeMeco, settling into pure MIKE (4-3 MLB). The DL is improving, Diles has taken more area off his shoulders & the secondary is really good in run support. so Ryans can focus on breaking down the defense & deligating responsibilites.

his high productivity was more a reflection of being a hybred, inside-outside cover LB with slow out of position support.......no more

He probably spent the whole off-season resting the injury... which might of resulted in the weight gain. He didn't get surgery for it, so it might still have some lingering effects... but so far Kubiak, McClain, etc. hasn't mention anything about that injury so its probably not.

I'm very, very concerned about Demeco

saying that Diles is picking up the slack is totally incorrect. MLBs in 4-3 Defenses almost always lead their team in tackles. He was getting 10+ a game in the beginning of the season, and now he's at 3? Thats way below average for a 4-3 MLB

And my FF team agrees with you completely.

I am playing in a league where you get a point per tackle. I drafted Meco knowing he was a lock for 10 points, (that and he is my favorite player) but instead i have been getting a steady 2 points ppg.

It all started after the ankle injury.

The Vikings ran the ball almost 35 times today, and Demeco ends up with 4 tackles. Either Ziles is the best OLB in the NFL or something is seriously wrong with Ryans

Ryans is playing with the same caliber of DTs he's always played with. I don't think there is even a slither of a doubt that Ryans is hurting. He's too good a player, when healthy, to not be making plays. We're not seeing the real DeMeco Ryans.

Comments like that show me how ignorant you are. Danny Clark is an excellent player who is smacking people around for the Giants. Even during the Cowboys game he got his name called 5-6 times for making good plays.

And even though you have this man crush on Zac Diles right now, he isn't as complete or good of a player as Morlon Greenwood.

Wow.. if he was really good then we would've re signed him in the off-season. Tell me, why would we, a team that was far from being solid at LB position at the end of the last season, wouldn't keep an excellent player? Funny, you probably don't have any clue on that do you? That would seems pretty ignorant.... Oh btw we signed two FA LBs and drafted one, instead of keeping Danny Clark and IIRC, Clark signed a one year deal with the Giants and is only starting because of injuries to the pervious starter. That really sounds like an "excellent" player.

EDIT: Oh my, I just read your last comment. Well sure he isn't complete yet, this is just his first season as starter.. just his second season in the league. If you really think he isn't already a better player then Morlon(a seasoned vet that is in his prime. Thats right, what you see on weekly basis is probably the best he played in his whole career :thud:)... well thats all I need to know about how ignorant you are.

Double-EDIT: Oh, and if you're going to determine a LB play by how many times a player name is called during the game, then why are you going to trash Diles? The commentators were riding his nuts the whole game, and rightfully so. Someone seem to have double-standard.

Hey I know this would never come across that narrow minded brain of yours, but sometimes players don't want to sign with a certain team. Just because the Texans offer him a contract doesn't mean he is going to take it. Sounds like he made the right choice going with the Giants.

Next time think about what you are going to post before you try and make a point, and edit, double edit or whatever the hell you are trying to say.

No where in the chron did it said we offered him a contract or even tried to re-sign him. And it wasn't like posters here were making petitions for to re-sign him either. Looks like we didn't think much of his play here, and he sure wasn't highly sought after by other teams either. That shows you what other team think of him.

You still didn't answer my question. If Danny Clark is an excellent player because the commentators were calling out him name throughout the game, why isn't Zach Diles? No answers??? Ok, well I wouldn't expect someone like you who just pull **** out of your ass to come up with answers to legit questions. Oh, and atleast Zach earned his starting job, Clark was the 2nd rated LB that only started because the guy in front of him was injured.

btw, its pretty funny you're going to say you had no clue what I was trying to say. "Danny Clark is an excellent player", "Morlon is better then Zac Diles":mcnugget:

Ok, so when the season was coming to an end last year, why wasn't Clark on the list of one of the guys we just had to resign, like Andre Davis/Will Demps was? This guy was just another average SLB for us, and we got three more LB that is way more versatile then him in the off-season.

Like I said again, we saw him play, we saw him practice, and we didn't see anything special. That why we let him walk. Unless you're saying you're seeing something "special" about him now that no one saw last year.

Because Andre Davis is an offensive player and people seem to key in on the flashy players rather than the cogs of a defense. Thats why.

Actually he plays all three linebacker positions and you thinking that we signed three linebackers that are more versatile is comical.

That is the reason Clark is so valuable. He is a VERSATILE linebacker that can play all three linebacker positions and as a vet teach the young ones.

Can he play situational DE, like Chaun Thompson? Adibi was drafted to play WLB and was also in the SLB mix, as was current back-up MLB Kevin Bently, who btw was the starting SLB at one point in TC. We got two guys(one that was drafted to push Morlon for WLB) that came in and can do everything that Clark would've reverted to doing(ST and back-up), since he lost his job to Diles, plus we added a athletic LB that can come in and help our pass rush at DE in situational plays. IMO we upgraded the LB position, but for you I guess we took a step back. Then again you were the same person that said Morlon Greenwood was a better player then Diles....

Danny Clark is an old slow average run of the mill OLB.

He is on his 5th team in 9 years. He has 5 career sacks, and 2 career INT. He was definitely not the future of the Texans. Obviously the Texans organization went with youth and potential over a proven average player.

Whats up with the hard on for Danny Clark?

Yes there is cause for immediate concern because this offseason we can be players in FA for the first time in four years.

If we follow Greirs recommendations like Casserly did we are doomed to repeat the same mistakes that have been made in the past.
