I think we have 18 (13 unrestricted and 5 restricted) including Payne, Bradford, Norris and Faggins. Who are the rest?

Houston Texans

ERFA-Jason Anderson, JJ Moses, Bryan Pittman

RFA-Jarrod Baxter, Milford Brown, Troy Evans, Demarcus Faggins, Matt Murphy, Jonathan Wells

FA-Tony Banks, Jason Bell, Marcus Bell, Corey Bradford, Junior Ioane, Marlon McCree, Moran Norris, Seth Payne, DaShon Polk, Corey Sears, Jason Simmons, Marcus Spears, Kenny WrightArlingtonTexan posted this here with a list of every FA to be http://www.houstontexans.com/fan_zone/messageboards/showthread.php?t=4289

Faggins and Milford Brown are the two I want to see back and the fact that they are RFA, the chances are good. I read that it may be hard to get Payne because of the $20 million in bonuses we gave Smith and Walker. Bell is a great special teams player so I want him back, too...

Obviously you'd like to see Jason Simmons back

I'd also like to see Jason Bell, Moran Norris, Seth Payne and Jason Anderson back.

I still think Jason Anderson has the potential to be an average starter in the NFL and a solid backup...I'd enjoy seeing him back next preseason

----------

Demarcus Faggins:
I like him as a nickelback. has some playmaking abilites.

Tony Banks:
Relaible Back Up

Moran Norris:
Tenacious Blocker (I love his aggressiveness)

DaShaun Polk:
he is a decent ILB, need depth there.. Unless he is asking for too much to be a back up.

Corey Sears:
Right now we are not that deep with decent talent on the DLine so I would keep him.

Jason Simmons:
For some reason I like this guy, plus he could add depth to the secondary, maybe give Coleman a little rest.

I want JJ back...we all saw what happens when he is not out there.
Faggins: Quatity nickel back
Norris: Paves the way for Davis
Simmons: The hardest hitter on the team
Payne: Playing like the 02' season
Bell: Excellent in special teams

TRU TRU,

Moses is great back there and I know the Texan's aren't gonna let him go..

Faggins: Quatity nickel back Some may not realize this but when the Texans go nickel, it's Robinson that plays the nickel position and Faggins at #2 corner. That's how Rob's been getting his sacks - blitzing off phoney press coverage on the slot guy.

I would honestly like everyone back but I seriously doubt Banks will be back since he wants to start and I don't know about Bradford, IMO the only way he returns is if it doesn't cost us too much. I figured Armstrong would have his spot by now but I guess not.

You know what aj..you are totally right. Dunta does line up in the nickel...I just watched the replay of the Peyton Manning sack on tivo to clarify.

Faggins: Quality up-coming cornerback

That's how Capers used Rod Woodson at the Corner with the Steelers. Its all part of his zone blitz scheme. He was always shifting around guys like Lake and Woodson utilizing the speed off the corners. I was curious why we rarely blitzed off the corners last year but then again we didn't have as much speed as with the new addition of Dunta, he ran 4.34 and 4.36 40 yard dashes at the combine. It would seem that looking back at now he was made for the zone blitz. In this years draft when you read scouting reports look for things like "good in zone coverage", that's always a tip on how Capers likes his players.

I'm not sold on bringing Payne back. Hes a good player but his knees are something else. He is deteriorating. He has good character and is a smart player, but his body is failing him. If we could bring him back a cheaper price then Walker or R. Smith then we should consider that and draft a DT in the 1st 2 rounds. But if he will be asking too much money then we have no choice but to look elsewhere. You'd like to keep players as much as possible but sometimes you have to look at alternatives.

Moses and Pittman we definatly need back. Im worried we will draft a fast WR in the middle rounds and drop moses though.

Faggins, Wells, and M. Brown are all necessary players. Faggins especially deserves a new contract.. a good one. He has been a huge help for this team. Wells has really improved, we definatly need to keep him with us as our #2 guy. M. Brown is still needed for depth. Note: Baxter would also be a good resign, but not necessary really.

Moran Norris, DaShon Polk, Jason Simmons, Jason Bell, Junior Ioane, and Kenny Wright. All great resigns. Norris is great, Polk is just now getting looked at and he aint lookin too bad so far, Simmons has been a beast at SS, Bell is a great special teamer, Ioane is needed depth at the Dline, and Wright is depth at CB.

Bradford, Payne, and Banks. Bradford can go... he has been useful but not for what we pay him.. we can find someone else. Payne I want to keep but I have a feeling he is going to require more money than he deserves for his age. Banks, time to let him go.. he has been a good backup.. but we dont need a veteran anymore, start giving Ragone alot of reps in practice.

those are my opinions

Payne is not even a full year removed from his last surgery on his knee and his recovery has been nothing short of remarkable. Most players have a hard time coming back in one year from "normal" ACL surgery - Seth has come back and played well despite the complications from two surgeries which required a third. He is probably our best d-lineman and I hope they are able to re-sign him. His injury may affect his ability to get "big" money with another team but I'm not aware of any other problems other than the one surgically repaired knee. He's still not able to carry as much weight as he wants but I think next season he could return as good as new. He's going to be 30 in February so you don't want to go crazy on a contract like they did with Walker. The fact that they invested so much in Walker and Smith will have an effect on what they will be willing spend to re-sign Payne, Sears, and DeLoach.

I'd hate to see us lose Banks. The guy has actually won some football games for us. He's a good backup. If we let Banks go, do we use Ragone as #2 or get another QB to take Banks' place?

Banks thinks he can be a starter somewhere else. Good luck with that one.
They need a quality #2, Ragone is not going to accomplish that. A Testeverde-type that can step in and hold the fort for a few games is needed.

Moses will be gone. They need a returner that can do something other than just return kicks. Look for Kendrick Starling or someone in the secondary to take over next year.

Payne should stick around for a small contract, compared to what Walker and Bear got. That turf in New Orleans cost him a ton of money.

Bradford, gone. Armstrong is a better receiver. They say that Bradford stretches the field, but the guy is too inconsistent.

They should do everything they can to re-sign Wells, Simmons and Faggins. The problem is that these guys have shown the rest of the league that they can play a little bit.

I have a feeling Testeverde might be available next season. I don't think the Cowpatties are too happy with him.

When he's on his game, I think he is clearly superior to Walker. But they can
invest only so much money in resigning verteran D-Lineman and must also
look to the draft to use scarce resources for inclusion of younger players in restocking the D-Line (and all positions for that matter). Another thing about Payne is that he has made it clear he very much wants to play in a SB. So he might sign at a discount to get with a real contender. Or maybe he thinks he's already with a team that will contend in the next few years, which would then enhance our own bargaining position.

I think Wells should be re-signed.. he has filled in nicely when davis has been out and he has been running VERY hard. He seems to be a good power fit for the zone blocking scheme.

If the Texans draft a center who can also deep snap, that will free up Pittman's roster spot. He hasn't been as consistent this year and has hurt Brown on a couple of FG attempts. If a roster spot is going to be reserved for a deep snapper, he needs to be just about perfect.

one would expect with 4 picks within the first 3 rounds that subtraction of four roster spots from our F/A, RF/A & ERF/A list.

ERFA-Jason Anderson, JJ Moses, Bryan Pittman

RFA-Jarrod Baxter, Milford Brown, Troy Evans, Demarcus Faggins, Matt Murphy, Jonathan Wells

FA-Tony Banks, Jason Bell, Marcus Bell, Corey Bradford, Junior Ioane, Marlon McCree, Moran Norris, Seth Payne, DaShon Polk, Corey Sears, Jason Simmons, Marcus Spears, Kenny Wright

the Texans are at least two deep at all these positions depending on who they draft and what needs are addressed other than the center position which has been mentioned numerous times, so you can bet the Texans use one of those first four picks on a center. After that even if Banks leaves we have two back-ups waiting in the wings. Norris is going to be the #1 FB with Wells as his back-up as needed. Our WR corps are talented & deep without Bradford, but I would not be surprised if he took a pay cut to stay with the Texans. If the Texans draft a TE in the first three rounds look for some change here as well, I'm just not sure who would be out however.

assuming we let Pittman go.. who will be our longsnapper? our draft pick? what if the best center available isnt a good longsnapper?

Just curious.. I mean.. would we then have to sign an FA longsnapper? probably end up signing Pittman again.

I really like Banks and hope he'll stay. Faggins and Payne need to stay too. I like Moses mostly because he's reliable. He did fumble today, but either than that, he's been dependable all season.
