Lions mum on QB situation; Kitna expects to return this season

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions nearly won a football game Sunday. On Monday, things seemed to be slipping back into a state of confusion.

The quarterback situation apparently was frozen by a missing trainer, and the team's star wide receiver was trying to stop endless trade rumors.

Citing the absence of trainer Dean Kleinschmidt, Lions coach Rod Marinelli refused to comment on quarterback Jon Kitna's injured back or his spot in the starting lineup when healthy. Kitna did not travel to Minnesota for Sunday's 12-10 loss to the Vikings, the first game he had not started since joining the Lions before the 2006 season.

"We'll have information about the injury for you on Wednesday," Marinelli said. "I'm not going to discuss that until we have a chance to meet with the trainers, coaches and doctors. As for the starting lineup, I won't talk about that until Sunday."

Marinelli's reticence was unusual because Kitna's injury happened in the Oct. 5 loss to Chicago, and Kitna had tests run on his back in the middle of last week.

File this under the "Very Incouraging News" dept.
Detroit's defense gives up 250+ passing yds and 421+ total yds/game. They've given up an average of 31.8 pts/game this season.

The bad news is we've given up an avg of 31.6 pts/game. If Kitna's back, and on his game, this could be a shootout.

It can be, but I can easily see the Texans winning this game. The next 3-4 games the Texans have will be very winnable.

That's what scares me. We don't do well with good fortune. We came off a 3 great games to start last season with a lot of swagger and then had a huge letdown against the Falcons and almost coughed up a game against the Dolphins. Then we went on the streak from hell.

And just think if we could have pulled out the W against the Jags and Colts and then had the next line of winnable games.

I hope we see Dan O instead of Kitna. I am confident that at home we can win this game as long as we dont allow Williams and Johnson to go hog wild against our secondary who I like more now than I did 5 weeks ago.

I don't think it matters who they put back there. Even if our D gives up there usual 4 TD's, our O is going to score 40 on this team.

I am bringing a couple of Lions fans to the game this weekend. I have a $100 bet on the season with one of them that the Texans will have more victories.

I hope Orlovsky plays.

Well I wasn't really a fan of the Texans back then so I can't really comment on that:fans: . However, we could of easily won against Jax and Indy, but we didn't. We did learn from our mistakes, and I think that showed, somewhat, in yesterday's game. Hopefully this team keeps learning from their mistakes, and improves each week. Maybe, just maybe, we will see the Texans win their first SuperBowl. Is it farfetched? Yeah, but its possible.

Neither is Kubiak.
From the presser...

(on if it is harder to get the first victory and what it’s like to be in Detroit and Cincinnati’s position) “Well, we know exactly what they’re going through. We’ve been going through the same thing. They went down to Minnesota yesterday and controlled the football game all day long and got beat by a pass interference call and a field goal. So we know exactly what they’re going through. They’re the same group of guys that were 6-2 last year after eight games that was playing very, very well. We know for a fact, I don’t have to tell our guys, we’ll have to play better than we played yesterday to beat them. We have to continue to clean up our football and continue to clean up what we’re doing to have a chance to continue to be successful.”

According to PFT (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/10/14/report-kitna-to-ir/), the Lions just put Kitna on IR. Looks like we do get to play against Mr. Safety.

I liked the description in Football Outsiders (http://footballoutsiders.com/audibles/audibles-line-week-6-2008)about the play:

Bill Barnwell: Maybe the play of the year in Detroit-Minnesota: After Adrian Peterson fumbled inside the 10 and Detroit recovered, Dan Orlovsky was backed up on his own goal line and proceeded to take the snap from under center, bootleg, and ... ran out of the end zone for a safety. Not because he was under a ton of pressure, but just because he didn't realize. Just astounding.

Vince Verhei: That will go down as the worst play of the year. It's not like the outside toe of one foot grazed the line. Both of his feet were running on white turf with plenty of inches to spare. He may have been closer to the other side of the white stripe than being in the field of play.

Mike Tanier: That was the funniest play in the NFL since Garo Yepremian. I wanted to draw this up before I drank too much watching the Phillies tonight. I call this play the "Clemenza," because Orlavsky leaves the gun to take the cannoli:

This might be the most dangerous game all year.

At home.
Against a team that is struggling with injuries and incompetency.
The Texans are healthy.

There are no excuses. They really HAVE to win.

The Texans game against Atlanta wasn't that completely messed up. Lots of injuries with the Texans at the time and it was on the road.

OMG You caught me!:francis:

But yeah, I guess I am a bandwagoner, as soon as Slaton got drafted by you guys I started showing interest in the team, only in seeing Slaton play at first; but the Texans have started to grow on me.

The team I grew up watching is the laughing stock of the NFL, they are still *my* team and I will always root for them come gameday, but that doesn't mean I'll just blindly follow what our senile owner does to the team.

Lol, if you haven't figured out what *my* team is by now, well...there is not really much I can say that would be appropriate on these forums.

Let's just say that even though I live in another state, have never been in Texas, and I haven't even watched a live game of the Texans let alone at Reliant Stadium; I still think :texan: at heart.

Back on topic, I have no doubt that the Texans will win, like some of you have already stated before, we really have no excuse for losing this game against a team that is so dysfunctional it makes the Raiders look perfectly normal.

A great quote during interview: (http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/30872769.html?elr=KArksi8cyaiU9PmP:QiUiD3aPc:_Yyc: aUU)

The difference in Sunday's game was a safety with 18 seconds left in the first quarter. The stat sheet says Jared Allen sacked Dan Orlovsky for the safety.

That's not entirely true. Allen was chasing him. But Orlovsky, making his first NFL start, accidentally ran out of the back of the end zone.

"I heard the whistle," Orlovsky said. "I was like, 'Did we false start? Was somebody offsides, or something?' Then I looked down and was like, 'You're an id*ot.'"

FYI, on the IQ Scale, the levels of stupidity:
Moron = 50-69
Imbecile = 30-49
id*ot = 29 & below

Beware of complacently preparing for an id*ot. If he has managed to learn from his mistake, we may no longer be dealing with an id*ot this Sunday. We should be thoroughly preparing to face an imbecile.:tiphat:
