It has nothing to do with being a "do-gooder". There is a reason he has been unemployed for as long as he has been. It's called not beeing a good running back which he has proven over the last couple of years. Benson has proven NOTHING in the NFL. More than likely, the guys they bring in have been cut recently and may be a surprise. Benson has been in the league a couple of years now and the only thing he has proven is that he cannot handle being an NFL running back.

I find all of the posts about the character of our players really interesting. In addition weak line play and a soft secondary, I guess we simply have too many high character guys on our team to win. We have had some issues, but a DUI and a charge for resisting arrest....well, it isn't enough to win in this league. If we had someone on the roster with a concealed hand weapon charge, perhaps someone found in possession with drugs...even better, possession of drugs with the intent to distrubute...something, anything, we would have been more competitive on Sunday.

We should bring in Cedric for a workout tomorrow...but I am just concerned that his rap sheet isn't where it should be to get this team over the top. I give him credit for adding the drunk boating charge by driving drunk, but I think we are going to need something more in the line of a felony to put the fear into the top defenses that we have yet to face.

Lets just hope Slaton and/orTaylor don't do such a good job of staying out of trouble...then we won't have to bring someone else in.

We don't necessarily need criminals but overlooking talent because they don't have a squeeky clean, spotless record is kind of dumb.
If a guy has paid his debt and is trying to turn his life around, why not give him a shot - albeit with a short leash.

Former Bears running back Cedric Benson, released by the team June 9 after two alcohol-related off-season arrests, said Saturday he has a tryout with the Houston Texans this week.

Now why would he go and say that, if Smith/Kubiak never scheduled him for a tryout? He must've thought that our running game was soo pathetic, that Kubiak would eventually be at his doorsteps, knees down, begging him to play for us. Wonder how he felt after he founded out that Kubiak said "no" to Benson right out on the radio for the whole world to hear. Cedric, you sad sad man, you.

Its going to be someone familiar with either kubes or gibbs. My problem with Benson is when defensive players come out and call u soft, that's a problem. When u get hit in the superbowl and fumble, then next time u leave the game, that a problem. The Phillipps,Merriman and company was on the radio and basicallyy pulling your card. If it wasn't for the luggage thing, I think bell would be on the roster.

Davenport is actually pretty interesting. He's close to 30, but he hasn't been used much, and he's got a career YPC average of 4.7 - which is exactly what he averaged last year for the Steelers when he had a career high in carries of 107.

Yeah, he's a retread, and no, he's probably not the missing piece of our Super Bowl puzzle (okay - he's definitely not the missing piece of our Super Bowl puzzle), but I like it better than Ced Benson, Shaun Alexander, or any other name I've heard out there.

For those concerned one way or the other, he does have a charge of domestic violence against him (found not guilty), and of course there's the infamous Laundry Basket incident, so those on this board looking for some attitude might find that a plus.

All I can say is that whether it's Walker from the PS, or someone off the street, if they're going to sign a RB to the 53 man roster, I hope the spot they fill is Ahman. Slaton's definitely got potential, and while Taylor may or may not be an NFL runningback, I've finally conceded that even if healthy (yeah - I know), Ahman's a step or two slower than he can afford to be.

MIAMI -- Green Bay Packers fullback Najeh Davenport was arrested Monday, accused of breaking into a university dormitory and defecating in a woman's closet.

Davenport, 23, surrendered to police Monday and was charged with a second-degree felony count of burglary and a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief, said Richard Master, a Miami Shores police spokesman.

The former University of Miami player was wanted on a warrant issued in April. He was released Monday from a Miami-Dade County jail after posting a $6,500 bond. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

"This whole thing is a misunderstanding. Najeh had nothing to do with the situation,'' said Richard Sharpstein, Davenport's attorney.

According to police, Davenport crept into a dorm room at Barry University around 6 a.m. on April 1. A woman sleeping in the room, Mary McCarthy, told police she was startled by a strange sound and saw Davenport squatting in her closet. Davenport then allegedly defecated in a laundry basket, McCarthy told detectives.

I've always liked najeh. He's big and fast, can catch and will play special teams and a really good 3rd down back. Speaking of the incident, he was on sirius and they asked him about it. He said he wasn't evenn in the building. He described the situation as going with nother guy and staying in the car. The ther guy did it, but he was the known name so he was put in the mix. Right before the draft his lawyer told himif he pleads guilty, it will just go away. He said that was the worse advice he ever taken because he has kids and they have to hear about it. He also talked about "the bulldog in lipstick" that he's had to deal with. Overrall, he's a 200 carry back. He has low miles, good burst and size. He's a older better version of what they think taylor is.

Ron Dayne can't try out. He's paying off a tab he owes...

If you see him on the sidewalk, look out for your LEGS...he tends to roll people up from the blindside.

Here's some of our other highly-prized RB castaways (names withheld out of respect):

Kubiak will be working drive-through if he doesn't get this figured out soon. Sheesh, Kubes, this isn't rocket science: After all, you can find "any RB" to fill the role, right?

Justin Forsett was released by the Seahawks. Maybe we could poach him before the hawks get him onto their PS?

why are the texans being so secretive about the RB tryouts?

Maybe because they aren't really in a hurry to sign anybody. All of you on here have been in love with Chris Taylor and now he should get his true chance with Slaton to see if he deserves his spot on this team.

Kubes has already said that Darius Walker would be the 1st running back they would sign if they signed any, so unless the Texans were willing to bring in Benson or Shawn Alexander then it really doesn't matter.

This started out as a legit thread about which RBs we should look at and you guys have taken it straight into the toilet.

Mission Accomplished!! :tiphat:

Because other teams want to snatch any running back the Texans decide are worth having?

I guess not.

I would like Forsett please:

2008 NFL Draft Prospect - Scouting Report
Forsett is a shifty runner with incredible vision and speed. He is a tremendous cut-back runner and he finished second in the Pac-10 in rushing with 1,546 yards and a 5.1 ypc average. He displays outstanding initial burst and a second-gear to run away from defenders in the open field. He is a fluid and smooth athlete and can be incredibly elusive in space. Forsett runs with good balance and body-control. He reminds me of a poor man's Maurice Jones-Drew, running with incredible power in spite of his small stature. Forsett is a very good receiver out of the backfield and is a decent blocker in pass pro (which could mean he'll contribute early as a third down running back in the NFL). Also, he has some experience returning kicks at California and displays upside as a returner in the NFL. Forsett lacks ideal size for an NFL running back at under 190 pounds, but he has drastically improved his draft status with a great showing in Senior Bowl practices. He has surprised many Senior Bowl scouts with his power and elusiveness. Forsett chose not to run at the combine and will make teams wait for his times for a personal workout. Teams are not concerned about his running times, they are more concerned about his size. Forsett will be a good player, but his draft status is tough to predict with such a deep running back class. Forsett ran the 40 in 4.62 and 4.73, which was disappointing for a back of his size. He seems to play faster than his times indicate. He had a 31-inch vertical jump, 9-foot, 9-inch long jump, and ran 4.46 short shuttle, and a 7.15 cone drill. Forsett improved his forty time at Cal's pro day by running a 4.59, but did not improve enough to make himself a first day pick. It is reported that the Philadelphia Eagles have shown interest in Forsett.

how do teams feel about getting their players poached when their just trying to get them to the practice squad? is it a gentlemens agreement to not do it, or is it kill or be killed?

Survival of the fattest I'm sure. It's a competitive league :)

Considering the tampering that is (reportedly) rampant across the league, I have a hard time believing anyone would blink over poaching a practice player. That said, if you do poach said player, they have to be active for the next three weeks or something. Not necessarily something you want to do with someone you aren't sure of.

From McClain's Blog (http://blogs.chron.com/nfl/2008/09/if_texans_beat_ravens_they_pla_1.html)

By the way, for those who want to know who the Texans brought in Tuesday to work out: LaBrandon Toefield, Najeh Davenport, Tyson Thompson, Noah Herring and Dwayne Wright. They didn't sign any of them, which means they're going with Steve Slaton, Chris Taylor and Darius Walker, who's on the practice squad, if Ahman Green isn't healthy enough.

Considering Green is limping around, I doubt seriously he'll be available for a while.

Wow. Even Tyson Thompson would've been good because he also provides you a KR. Sounds like Darius is on his way up. Here's hoping all 3 of them do something great to give us a reason to get rid of Ahman Green.

:gun: I kinda knew we wouldn't go after him, if we went after someone at all would have been a bigger back. I really like Forsett though.
