She seems so surprised by the wave. I mean WTF lady? Your on Galveston with a hurricane bearing down on the island...what did you think was going to happen?

Errant Hothy

Nothing about this storm makes sense. The pressure seems to have a mind of its own and the storm surge is bigger than the storm should make.

I think Ike is ***** slapping the laws of physics right now

The pressure is certainly dancing up and down a lot, but the movement of the pressure is having no impact on wind speed.

Surge is another issue altogether. Ike's size is a huge factor into the amount of surge being generated. The storm is literally moving all of the water in Gulf currently.

A group of hero's when it comes to hurricanes:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080912/ap_on_re_us/eye_of_ike

NSIDE HURRICANE IKE - Amid the engines' roar, the Air Force Reserve pilots and navigator worked calmly as their huge plane neared the eyewall of Hurricane Ike.

The gray cloud, looming 50,000 feet into the sky like a colossal concrete barrier was four miles thick, and the Lockheed WC-130J was hurtling into it.

Hervoyel
09-12-2008, 03:13 PM
I think it's all going to turn out generally fine as far as Ike goes. It's sliding up the coast slowly and by tomorrow evening we'll be in a fairly good spot to (unfortunately for them) watch it bash the crap out of everything east of here to the border. We'll get rain and wind and some trees go down and some windows get broken but overall this is not going to be anywhere near as bad as it could have been (much like Rita).

You know, I'm really kind of hit or miss with the predicting the future thing.

Thorn

Hurricanes are like Microsoft Windows, don't ever count on them to do what you need them to do.

Hervoyel
09-12-2008, 03:19 PM
....Also seeing shrimpers heading out on TV... I wonder what they are doing?

They're getting away from the coast. For them it's actually safer to be out at sea than to be in port during one of these (assuming it's not some unholy CAT5 monster of course). They're probably running down the coast to get away from the worst of it.

Good idea. My wife just went around the house earlier and did the same thing. She put them on her pen drive though.

I uploaded mine to my Kodak Gallery. It's a good idea for insurance purposes and they're safely away from all of this.

Nothing like waiting until the afternoon before a hurricane to ask this, but I have a gas canister grill that's stored in the garage, tucked behind our cars. I don't anticipate failure of the garage door or any other part of our building structure, but are there any safety precautions I should be taking with that canister?

CNN is reporting that the Coast Guard has grounded all air operations.

Not good. I just read this on abc13 (http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=weather/hurricane&id=6387029)

Petty Officer Patrick Kelley said at least 150 people were reportedly trapped. Four helicopters were sent to rescue the residents. So far, the Coast Guard has rescued 65 people.
Bolivar Peninsula resident Audina Umbricht told Eyewitness News that she planned to evacuate when she woke up this morning, but got up too late and realized the water had already gotten too high. At that point, her husband started calling the Coast Guard for help.

Probably a lot of people think the media overdramatizes, plus the Rita fiasco, plus just thinking a Cat 2 wouldn't be that bad.

NHC, however, is not prone to dramatization as far as know, and they've used the most extreme wording for this storm I have ever seen them use.

It is the water that kills and many have noted how much water this storm will bring. I think those still in Galveston may have grown a bit complacent and too much faith in the seawall. We will see, I guess.

Also, bearz.

28mph sustained 30 sec gust on my weather station, wind is a steady 14-20mph. Dunno how long my anemometer will hold up on the 14' PVC pipe mounted on the fence post...but its interesting to watch.

Sitting upstairs in a room with boarded up windows is freaky. It is pitch black with the lights out and the wind is already howling outside.

Don't let your guard down guys. I think they have this too far down the coast. I see landfall from Matagorda Bay to Galveston as a cat 2 or 3. Watch and see if they don't start inching the track up the coast slowly but surely over the next day or so.

Sometimes I hate being right. :gun:

This was posted when the NHC said it was going in south of Corpus.

Well, be careful guys. I'll be online here and there until the ole power grid takes a hike. We lost pwr for 5 days with Alicia. Who the hells knows this time.

You may want to fill your tub with water. That way you can still flush your toilet, and if the water becomes unpotable you still have something to wash with/drink.

My bathroom is shaped like a very long rectangle, so I got my computer sitting on the counter by the sink. It's not the greatest situation in the world, but every other room in my apartment has windows, so I sure as hell ain't spending the night in them. I can't sleep in my bathtub because I filled it with water. If the water pressure dies, it's dang helpful if you have water to flush the toilet with.

The stupid cat is hiding now, I think she senses something is up. I moved her litter box into the hallway out of the room it was in, so I imagine shes starting to get freaked. That makes two of us.

I filled up a big laundry-basket sized container for just this purpose, so I'm good. If things go to shit in my area, I'll go out to stay with my dad in Katy. There's just not enough room in my bathroom for me, 2 cats and a bottle of gin.

There is a high possibility I will get peed on by the fat, spastic one. I have their two carriers ready and waiting in the bathroom. I'll let them out once we're ready to stay in there for the night.

I'm just off Westheimer about a mile west of the Sam Houston Tollway. Just walked around my apartment complex. No rain yet, the wind is picking up a bit. It's sunset and you can see the clouds moving pretty fast. I've noticed a few apartments where folks must have left town and forgot to clear off their patio. Man, are they gonna get a nasty suprise when they get back. that stuff is gonna fly through their glass patio doors and their apartment will be a frigging mess.

I've got my air conditioning turned WAY down and it's starting to get pretty cold in here now. That's in case I lose electricity, I'd like it to be cool for at least a bit longer. Don't really think this will do anything except run up my electric bill though.

I was forced to leave my dogs at home. My stepdad's a cop so he has to work through the storm and my mother's the activities coordinator at an assisted living home. My mom wouldn't let me stay home alone with my puppies, and because I'm a minor I'm forced to do what she says. So I'm staying with my grandma. I couldn't bring my puppies here because my grandma hates dogs in the house (she has hardwoods and she doesn't like dogs who shed). I left them in my house, sadly. I have yet to stop thinking about them. I left them plenty of water and gave them each a beef rib to keep them busy. I also left the radio on so they could hear a voice and not go nuts at the silence. I feel awful. :/

Ugh...

Any hopes for Galveston and communities along Galveston Bay to avoid a catastrophic storm surge may well be over.

The latest model runs offer those areas little comfort. Far from bringing Ike inland to the east of Galveston Island, both the HWRF and GFDL models bring the hurricane over the island's west end.

Although this won't produce a maximum surge over Galveston Island — that would require a strike closer to Freeport — a landfall on Galveston's west end should bring enough surge to likely overtop the city's seawall. I expect it to all but destroy most non-concrete structures not behind the seawall.

The storm surge at Galveston's Pier 21 has already reached 8.5 feet this evening, and we're still probably six hours from landfall, and nearly seven hours from high tide.

The storm surge will reach maximum levels, well above 20 feet most likely, along the coast of Galveston Bay. This will especially be the case on the west and north sides of the bay.

This landfall location also increases the likelihood of hurricane-force winds across more, if not most, of Harris County. I'll try to update the estimated storm surge and inland wind speeds later this evening.

The last strong windstorm whipped half the tree into my neighbors yard. He came over and was like "a branch fell in my yard" and was real nice about it. He wanted to borrow a chainsaw because his electric one wasn't doing the job. I go look and the top half of the tree was gone. We ended up cutting up about a pickup bed full of logs. Ever since it's kinda swaying a bit.

The fence has 3 posts that were broken pre-hurricane and it kinda sways a bit. It's definitely a gonner.

I bet you're glad you got out of League City Andrew. I just moved up here to Tomball from League City a couple of months ago and it's looking like it was good timing.

My mom and her husband live in South Shore and are staying with us here. I hope your property in League City is as good as you left it.

I hope so too. My neighbor stayed and is keeping an eye on everything. I just hope that clear creek doesn't start flooding.

I'm regretting turning half my garage into a kennel right about now. I have the other half filled with everything that might become a projectile in a strong wind and so there's no room for a car in there.

My GTO is sitting out in the driveway and up against the side of the house. I think every inch of my driveway has something growing over it that looks like it's probably going to come off in a strong gust of wind. This afternoon when we were pulling the cars in I had a bad feeling about this. Hopefully nothing happens. If it does I almost hope it's an entire oak tree and not just a bunch of glass and body work (but not enough to total it).

Shetex still has power

Good to hear she still has power. Entertainment is some folks about four apartments down from me. I had thought they were packing to leave, but then I just went outside for a smoke and they were back packing more stuff into their truck. I talked to them for a minute, they are moving tonight. I asked them if they knew there was a hurricane, and they said they don't care about the hurricane. Takes all kinds I guess.

You ever hear Mitch Hedberg talking about how Turkey in the deli section really pisses him off?

That's kind of how I feel about GTO clones. I dig the Le Mans the way it's supposed to be and as cool as the goats were I actually really want a Le Mans GT convertible. Just because it's "not" a GTO if that makes any sense.

I almost bought one when I was in San Antonio in 1985 and was going to pick up the most perfect Le Mans I'd ever seen from my neighbor there. He was a Methodist Minister and his wife's parents had given them that car when they got married so they were the second owners. The interior of that car looked better than the interior in my 2006 and it was that dark green exterior with the black interior. The guy wanted $500 for that car and it was so nice I could not believe my luck.

The day I came home from work with the last paycheck needed to get the car his wife got t-boned by a Dodge Caravan on the way home from work. I saw the pictures and it almost made me throw up. She was fine but the car was gone.

Someday I'll get my Le Mans. It's just a matter of time.
