From the Times Picayune (http://blog.nola.com/saintsbeat/2008/08/new_orleans_saints_aug_13_morn.html). Not much, yet. Except Mario & the D-line are kicking arse. :)

-Of the Saints' offensive line and the Texans' defensive line, Houston seemed to have the edge during team drills. Saints quarterback Drew Brees completed several passes with his first team, but he would have been sacked at least once - and quarterbacks Mark Brunell and Tyler Palko would have incurred several more sacks.

If you are not allowed to sack the QB in the practice I doubt very seriously they are allowing us to practice our cut blocking. Gibbs needs all the time he can get after the Denver showing. Come on Gibbs!

i really think our preseason games are more important for us that most other teams in the league for this reason. the OL gets basically only 4 true rehearsals before the games count. all of our practices are theoretical in nature where the lineman grabs the Defensman and squares up on him and they agree that he has been "cut blocked" and therefore no longer persue's the play.

that's pretty scary to think how little time we have to perfect this. it's a good thing we have the perfector running the show.

Here's another report. Might be a little biased, but nice to see AJ making DB's look afool again.

Last season in the week 11 match up between the Saints and Texans, Houston receiver Andre Johnson burned cornerback Jason David for a deep touchdown. Early in practice during one on one drills today he did it again. Johnson also faked safety Roman Harper out so bad that when he caught the ball, the Saint defender was at least 30 yards away.

Yeah, Ramsey's just a horrible QB. I'm very happy we ended up going a different direction instead of bringing him in here. It just makes me appreciate the talent SmithGM & Co have at evaluating players even more.

Whoever is under center NEEDS to play within themselves and protect the football at all costs. If that means throwing the ball away instead of forcing it into triple coverage then so be it.

This one's from the Saints and appears to only point out positive plays the Saints had.

Baldy was there though, so maybe they'll be on NFLN soon.

“This (practice sessions) tells me something important about both of these teams,” said NFL Network and FOX analyst Brian Baldinger, who was on hand this morning. “This tells me right off the bat that you have two well-coached, disciplined teams that understand what the term ‘practice’ means. I’m impressed with what I saw this morning. They got their work in and didn’t get caught up in trying to do foolish things like push and shove and get the last word in.”

After reading these articles, its clear to me that the Saints are MUCH better in at least one department:

Coverage (of their team activities)

There are already at least 3 detailed accounts of the morning practice from the Saints side. Im sure our HT.com people and radio announcers are over there. Why haven't we gotten any updates about our players?

I am pretty disappointed in our news coverage. Im dying to know more about the practice!

Another Mario vs. Reggie redux (http://videos.nola.com/times-picayune/2008/08/saints_training_camp_day_20.html) from a couple of Saints talking heads. Hey guys, if Reggie isn't an "every down back" as you say, doesn't that make an every down DE like Mario the obvious better pick?

You had me there for a second. :heh:

Stuff like this has to be really refreshing for both teams. You get sick of going up against the same people everyday for weeks and I'm sure it's nice to be able to judge your progress against someone else.

From what I've seen (read), it looks like both defensive lines looked pretty good in the first practice. Lots of pressure from the edges. Thing is, I know that Brees is one of the absolute best in the league at feeling that edge pressure and stepping up in the proper place to avoid it. It's the middle pash rush that gives us problems. Drew's not the tallest guy and it's a lot harder to avoid a rush that's coming right at you. It's Okoye and Johnson that would be key for you guys to disrupt our passing game (or stunts of course).

Not that any of that matters since we won't see each other during the regular season, anyway. Just my couple cents worth.

Well that's semantics.

If Reggie stays healthy and is utilized properly, he will be an "every down back", just not used in the same way on every down. Some seem to think this makes him less valuable, but I think it just makes him less conventional. Whether or not it's my preference to have someone carry the ball 25 times a game is immaterial. It's obviously not our coaches' preference, and you can tell in the way he's game planned his entire career.

With that said, I didn't watch the video you referenced and have little doubt those guys probably don't know what they're talking about. Especially if it's those couple of young looking dudes that were covering training camp that I'm thinking of.

Cuppacoffee submitted a thread over in our "NFL" section about Bush's new contract, which some of us including this poster are really puzzled about ?

"Every down back" were their words, not mine.

It's fair to say that the Saints haven't fully utilized Reggie's skills, at this point. He should see more time in the slot, or as a wingback, to create mismatches. But that's on the Saints coaching staff, or Reggie's preparation. Bush should have spent the '07 offseason with the team. He didn't, and it showed.

I won't lie, Bush could play for the Texans. The team is thin at RB. But, I don't believe he could make the same impact that Mario has. Case closed, as far as I'm concerned. Regarding the Saints pick, I have to wonder if AJ Hawk might be more useful and needed. I don't see much difference in the Saints offense when Aaron Stecker is in the backfield. Brees is the straw that stirs the Saints' Sazerac.

The afternoon practice report from the Times Picayune (http://blog.nola.com/saintsbeat/2008/08/new_orleans_saints_aug_13_afte.html):

• Quarterback Drew Brees had the Texans' defensive line in his face and looked rattled during the first play of team drills, causing him to call a timeout. On the next play, he had Texans defensive end Mario Williams as close as he could be.
• The Saints' first-team offense and second-team offense both had two-minute drills against the Texans' defense that ended in interceptions. Mark Brunell was intercepted near the end zone by cornerback Derrick Roberson, and Brees was intercepted in the end zone by cornerback Jamar Fletcher.
• Tyler Palko threw an interception to Texans cornerback Antwaun Molden in his final drive, but he followed it up with a nice pass of 25-30 yards up the middle to tight end Billy Miller. Sounds like the Texans defense dominated this practice. I'm glad to see Billy Miller still has a NFL job.

The Saints official site tried to paint a rosier picture (http://www.neworleanssaints.com/Articles/2008/8/Saints%20and%20Texans%20Practice%20Session%202.asp x), but interceptions are still interceptions.

Following some special teams work that focused on field goals and kickoffs that both teams practiced against themselves on the squads reconvened for a final team session that saw the Saints march down the field behind Drew Brees (http://www.neworleanssaints.com/Team/Roster/People/Drew%20Brees.aspx), with a nice completion to RB Reggie Bush (http://www.neworleanssaints.com/Team/Roster/People/Reggie%20Bush.aspx) that picked up eight yards, a completion to Miller for seven yards, a diving 12-yard completion to WR Devery Henderson (http://www.neworleanssaints.com/Team/Roster/People/Devery%20Henderson.aspx) and an 18-yard completion to Bush. However on an ensuing down DE Mario Williams and DT Amobi Okoye pressured Brees in the pocket and the Saints’ scoring drive was thwarted when Brees was intercepted in the end zone by SS Glenn Earl.Mario & Amobi getting it done! Can't wait to see the game on Saturday.

It's preseason. I'm more concerned about O-line improvement in run blocking and our 1st team defensive linemen getting a sack or two along with their run blocking than I am about winning.

I'm also very interested in seeing Brink play in the 2nd half. I have a feeling Boyd is our 3rd string QB when the season starts. I wonder if after the game Saturday I'll be having second thoughts on that. LOL

More coverage of the afterneen practice from WWLTV.com (http://www.beloblog.com//WWLTV_Blogs/eyeonthesaints/2008/08/saints-camp-aug-13-afternoon-o.html):

New Orleans' offense picked things up in the afternoon compared to Wednesday morning, especially in 11-on-11 drills.

While the O-line looked tired and unmotivated in the morning, they were able to come up with much better blocking in one-on-one drills in the afternoon. Mario Williams, Houston's defensive end that was the No. 1 pick in 2006, did make some big plays from the corner.

The big surprise, though, was that the teams stayed in shells this afternoon - helmets, shoulder pads and shorts. We're not sure why they didn't go full pads, and with a game coming up Saturday night against the Texans, they likely won't go full pads on Thursday.A recurrent theme.

I haven't heard much from the Texans offense. Saturday night will be huge for Chris Brown and the o-line.

You sure? I used it a lot for Texans games, and Rockets games. TVU is another one. Trust me, once the NFL season starts, a bunch of sites will pop up with reliable links. :)

Definitely.

I'm going to try harder this year to make some DFW parties.

If not, Dominos is only a phone call away...

Or Quiznos nowadays ;).

It's foreign, but www.rojadirecta.com always works for me. They usually have multiple links per game, though sometimes you can't find any in English.

It appears what was thought to be a strain, is a tear. Big Hollis Thomas has a torn tricep. Looks like Ellis has to be THE man in the middle.

It sucks seeing a Big Nasty get hurt during a practice.

The New Orleans Saints' starting defensive tackle Hollis Thomas has torn his right tricep at practice. Coach Sean Payton said Thomas would likely be off the playing field for two months.

Hate to see that happen, I actually wanted the Saints to be at full strength particularly on the DL so we could see how much our OL truly improved from this last week. Our interior OL caught a break with the Thomas injury and in preseason that's not what you really want imo.

Here's a little report from this mornings practice. It appears all the talk of them being lovey dovey on the field is now moot.

This report makes Cochran the bad guy, but who knows??

- Here's exactly what started the fight that occured during 11-on-11 drills: Saints guard Jahri Evans was blocking Texans defensive end Earl Cochran, when Cochran took a swing at him . Evans returned the favor by taking a shot at Cochran. Players from both sides swarmed the field, but it was broken up pretty quickly.

Here's a video from that dude again. You can see Humpty Dumpty waddling around behind him. :gun:

Hummmm...I may have to change the name of my fan club from the Travis Johnson fan club to the T.Johnson and E. Cochran fan club..
I am definitely ready for some "attitude" on this team..:kingkong:

this hurts us.

One of the hopes for an improved secondary was actually through an improved defensive line with pressure on the QB. Our secondary still has major, major concerns. And losing Thomas's presence in the middle - in a camp for which he showed up light (for him, lol) and worked hard and really looked good, this sucks.

Hope Ellis is ready.

Hopefully you guys get healthy for the regular season. We know what it's like to have a ton of injuries.
