SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Volatile wide receiver Steve Smith and cornerback Ken Lucas exchanged blows during a sideline altercation at Friday morning's practice at Wofford College.

Lucas left the field bloodied and with an ice pack over his left eye.

After being kicked out of practice, Smith was escorted from the practice field by general manager Marty Hurney. Smith left with a towel draped over his head.

The two men were on the sidelines while other members of the team were working through special teams drills when the fight broke out. They exchanged several punches before teammates and coach John Fox charged in to break up the fight. Linebacker Jon Beason had to pull Smith away from Lucas. It took several people to restrain the men and restore order.

Neither player was wearing a helmet at the time of the fight.

Lucas was then taken under the tent at the practice field and treated by trainer Ryan Vermillion. His face was bloodied and he appeared to have a large gash under his left eye. He held ice on the eye for several minutes.

Shortly after the fight Smith came over, with Muhsin Muhammad and another coach by his side, and appeared to try and reconcile with Lucas. The two men briefly exchanged a hug. Smith left and later came back to check on Lucas again.

A few years ago, not long after Lucas signed a six-year, $36 million contract to come to Carolina, Smith was heard talking trash to Lucas on the field.

After he beat Lucas for a touchdown, Smith turned and said, "I'm earning my money; you better start earning yours."

A few minutes later, Smith beat Lucas for another score and said, "That's two, *****."

When asked if he's worried about losing Smith to a suspension, Delhomme said, "We don't know what is going to happen, but this team can't stop. This team has to keep going on. There was not another skirmish. Both sides collected themselves and finished off practice in a positive way."

Internal fighting, so what.....

As long as it is on the field, let the team decide his punishment...

After punching teammate Ken Lucas, Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith was escorted off the field by Carolina general manager Marty Hurney, and then sent home. The team said they would handle it internally, but Smith has gotten violent with teammates before, and it's certainly possible he could be suspended for a game.

Suspended first 2 games...

Panthers head coach John Fox just announced that wide receiver Steve Smith has been suspended for the first two games of the season for punching cornerback Ken Lucas on the sidelines during Friday's training camp practice in Spartanburg. Fox, speaking after the Fan Fest scrimmage at Bank of America Stadium, said Smith's actions would not be tolerated and that Smith has been given conditions for the future regarding such behavior. Fox said Lucas suffered a broken nose.

Props to the Panthers for suspending him internally - without the NFL having to do it for them. Definitely shows they won't tolerate that crap.

Crap. Suspending a player for 2 games for a little TC skuffle? Pretty lame to me. He's their best player.

if the panthers are interested in trading him then I hope the Texans would at least have an interest in him. he does have on practice field issues but plays like a monster and with an attitude. we could use a little of that on offense, the exact opposite of AJ and perhaps a perfect compliment.

Like every other front office, Smithiak would have an interest in him if he were available, but I doubt their interest would be commensurate with what the Panthers expect to get in return.

Nah guh hpn.

Just curious but what makes you think the Panthers would be interested in trading the catalyst for their Offense?

The Panthers have no interest in trading Steve Smith, so keep dreaming. They wouldn't trade him even if he punched a teammate, coach, kitten, woman or baby in the eye.

Sounds like it was worse than that... Smith himself said he has been fighting anger mgmt issues.

I would think losing two game checks could be very theraputic

OR just piss him off even more and lead to a downward spiral leading to a horrible incident involving some rubber tubing, duct tape, a bottle of Jack Daniels, and a some rope. And Roger Goodell.
