unfortunately i said this with Miami when we hired Hudson Houck, best offensive line coach in the game, and he drafted 3-4 players in the later rounds that are all gone now, and never did anything.

Brilliant. Duane Brown was ranked:

56th best overall player by Gosselin.
66th best by SI.com
85th best by ProFootballWeekly.com
165th best by Scout.com

Maybe he'll be great, but there's no way he's not a reach. Kiper thinks he's better than Baker and Cherilus, at least.

I'm officially depressed.

Htownsportsfan
04-26-2008, 05:08 PM
I agree with coach Mouch on the NFLN this pick wreaks of a hand picking by Alex Gibbs so its a good pick and and Kiper says its not a reach. I like the ability to get the players the position coach wants and still get other picks!

Duane Brown. Who the heck is that. lol

Pros: Former TE (speed). Long arms, good feet. 315lbs. Good balance.

Cons: Former TE (undersized, 6'4"). May get over powered by stronger DE. Needs to gain strength.

This guy has tremendous upside, and this is a good pick. He has first rd talent, he's just a little raw. It's about time we take an olineman in rd 1. Our line is shaping up to be very good, very quick. The days of the swiss cheese line is over.

Great job Rick Smith, and Gary Kubiak with an assist from Gibbs. Now we have 6 picks tomorrow, and can fill CB, RB, DE, and maybe a LB or safety to boot.

Great start, and I am totally pumped.

In 2007, Brown garnered second-team All-ACC honors. He switched to left offensive tackle, totaling 34 knockdowns, but he also allowed 8.5 of the 54 sacks given up by the front wall. http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/duane-brown?id=808

Yeah, the only thing I wonder is if we were going after Jenkins or Johnson. But secondary was OT. Maybe their goal was the extra 3rd rounder for depth. I just hope they know what they are doing.

Maybe they are thinking they can get some good RBs and CB later. Diamonds in the rough?

Or you suck as a tallent evaluator... You got an over thirty guy protecing the blind side of the QB...they had to do something. at least they didn't pay the guy 18 money. You now have some hope of Keeping MS upright if Salaam goes down.
OLT was and has been the bigest hole. They had no ammo to move up in the first. and Brown wasn't going to be there @ the 79.

I'm trying to be positive about this selection. At least we will have enough depth on the line and really won't have to worry as much about Charles Spencer's recovery. I wanted an o-line this year since the class is tackle heavy. Duane Brown might be a bit of a reach but even if he turns out to be a better guard I'll be happy. This o-line has been overlooked for far too long in the draft. I think we got a player with some talent and with the right coaching I think he can become our left tackle (if Charles Spencer doesn't make it) and that's what we need. Remember that the draft is not over and there are other picks left and I'm sure we'll adress issues with the secondary and pass rushing with these other picks. Welcome to Houston Duane Brown!

Htownsportsfan

Hello? We got our starting RT, Eric Winston, (and Big Nasty) in the 3rd round two years ago and Jacoby Jones in the 3rd round last year.

The first round is NOT the whole draft

Definitely, I was pretty psyched when Mendenhall was there at 18 and was bummed when we traded down, but I for one am NOT going to prematurely complain and label this draft. we actually had a chance to trade back a second time but Smithiak declined...

http://houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=4272

This year's swap created some anxiety among the Texans' coaches and scouts, but Smith remained calm.

"We were worried (Brown wouldn't be there at No. 26)," Smith said. "I think I tried to be the calm in the storm because I had a room full of people who were scared to death that we were not going to get him. So I had to put on a good face."

The Seattle Seahawks, who held the No. 28 overall pick, called about trading up for the Texans' No. 26 overall pick, but Smith respectfully declined their offer.

"I don't think (Kubiak) could have handled that," Smith said smiling. "By the time we made the pick, (Kubiak) was in the back of the room."

"I actually heard the phone ring with about a minute left," Kubiak said, "and I screamed down, 'Don't answer it!'"

Things are looking good for us in the CB front. Only 7 of them picked so far so we have a fairly good chance of getting a good one in the third. Godfrey, King, Patrick Lee are all available so good chance one drops to us. Makes not picking CB in the first look like a good choice in hindsight.

I like the pick. Saw him play twice last year, he's got good footwork, speed and knows how to block downfield. I have no problem with the pick and look forward to seeing what he can do.

put the whole series in or it means nothing.
...or are you like those Fox media twerps who just use soundbites that serve your purpose?

That statement was concerning the #18 pick where we neither picked an OL nor a RB. Those of us who thought (hoped) we'd pick a RB or OL at 18 were all wrong. They traded down.

I listen to nfl radio everyday, not to mention I have a buddy who is a scout. What is consensus and consistent is during his tenure with the broncos , gibbs chooses the lineman and rb's. He also coaches both. Also what's consistent is gibbs never drafts rb's that run from spread and the lt is almost always a ex tight end. Even spencer was a ex tight end.

I knew mendenhall would be there and I knew the texans would pass. Go and look at the rbs chosen by the broncos during gibbs era and u will see all were I-backs. People may not like it, but they got a atheletic tackle to coach up and a extra pick. I trust their judgement.

In Kubiak's time here, our 3rd round picks turned into Erik Winston, Charles Spencer, and Jacoby Jones. Can't wait to see who we get tomorrow.

By the way, everyone says Jonathan Stewart gives Carolina a legit running game....but no way he turns out better than DeAngelo Williams.

People are calling Jonathan Stewart a "Jamal Lewis" type back.

Kevin Smith off the board. J Charles is still around in the third I guess he was given poor advice about being a late 1st early 2nd pick.

Not surprisingly, Kevin Smith goes to Det.
