Reason 1 was the politically correct reason. Reason 2 will make me about as well liked in Eugene, Ore., as Kevin Love. You see, Stewart had surgery on his toe a few weeks ago. Scouts, agents, and GMs alike will tell you that this fact will have absolutely no effect on when/where Stewart will be drafted come April 26 as he intentionally had the surgery now, as opposed to later so he could be 100 percent healthy for minicamp. I'll believe that when I see Roger Goodell announce his name and hand him a hat emblazoned with an NFL logo within the first 31 picks on Draft Day. Until then, I think the surgery paired with a history of hamstring and ankle issues during his time at Oregon may come into play while a team is on the clock, deciding whether or not to spend their first-round pick (and their first-round money) on the guy.

Is Stewart the third-best running back prospect in the 2008 draft? Perhaps. Is he a first-round pick in the 2008 draft? I just don't see it.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7971332

Shame on the general manager who gets spooked by Stewart's toe surgery. This kid can do it all and has the body of work to prove it. He was a first-team All-Pac-10 running back. He set an Oregon record with 1,722 rushing yards, which ranks as the ninth-best single-season mark in conference history. He averaged a whopping 6.2 yards a carry and pounded in 11 touchdowns. Stewart was also a special kick returner, averaging 27 yards per return.

And if that wasn't enough, Stewart developed an ultra-special knack for not turning over the football.

At 5-foot-10 and 235 pounds, he has the size and strength of a fullback. He bursts like a scat back. And Stewart has the "it" factor that you simply cannot teach.

Trade back.

Aqib Talib : after his position work outs...I'd loose all Respect for Smithiack if this guy is not off their board.....completely. If they take this guy, Hoak deserves 10% of what ever the contract is worth for just having to fool with him.

I'm also hoping some team looks @ Balmer earlier than #18, Otah goes to Detroit #15, Arizona takes hometown product Cason & Merling could go #18 to Minnesota. that would free up three of those guys, you've speculated would be gone. I'll just submit the last three names for arguements sake, Branden Albert, Mike Jenkins, & Jonathan Stewart. to comply with the question its Otah who would be the highest rated player, fills need & Gibbs re-retires again (2-3 years) leaving the Texans w/franchise LT, totaly rebuilt OL, productive running & passing game

McClain is just saying on 610 Otah is a RT. that he doesn't have the speed or smarts to play Gibbs system. thats a bunch of BS. he scored 2nd highest of linemen on Wonderlick (behind Williams) for those who care a rats tail about that, he is very athletic for his size much more so than Spencer & he did alright until his injury. he could easily drop 20-30 lbs play around 317-20, the Left Tackle is the one positin even in the ZBS where you can plug in a big ugly, the important thing is they play with intensisty, meaness & DE's either give up or know their in for a long, long day at the office.

Agreed.
Otah is one of those OLineman with a very extensive background in roundball, always a good indicator for a players athleticism. And speaking of players being in for a very long day, top-rated DE Chris Long had 2 very long days
against Otah: each time he faced Otah in the last 2 straight years the big Pitt tackle handled him nicely in their matchups.

The important thing to remember regarding McClain is that he's a parrot. He's just repeating what he's heard (squak). Is it the Texans giving him this information? Who's to say? I know he's buddy-buddy with Titans scout C.O. Brocato (another Baylor Bear). He gets a lot of stuff from him, and probably other contacts around the league.

I agree. He was also saying the other day that if a rookie or Taylor did well in the backfield then we might not keep Green and Brown....or keep one and cut the other. So I'm not sure where he gets his info.

I'm really not trying to be sarcastic here when I say I think McClain responds to questions, say from callers, by reading directly off prepared notes, i.e. a
"cheat sheet". His answers are so canned, not at all impromptu as you'd expect, certainly atleast hope for from someone who has his own radio show.
And his writing skills are really limited. Some times his Chron articles read downright juvenile.
Now JM can still have some genuinely entertaining moments when telling some storys about the old times, like back in the day of the 70s & 80s when he's talking about individual Oiler players and telling tales on them. Sometimes
he can come up with some real gems. He has after all been around quite awhile, seen a lot. But it would seem that that memory modulates daily -
sometimes its tuned in, other days not so much.

would gibbs take otah a couple years after this.. some similiarities

"Unlike McDougle, Foster seems to have more passion for the game, but needs to stay more consistent with his intensity.

Technically, Foster is very good is all parts of the game and, although, he looks a little top-heavy, he's strong in the running attack. He's got pretty good footwork and can handle an outside pass rush, but is vulnerable to inside counter moves. Foster can also have trouble from time to time with a good bull-rush move"

IIRC Levi Brown and Ginn jr were the only players taken in the top ten that werent projected to go there. Branch, Quinn and Lynch depending on who you talked too or what site you referenced were all considered top 10 talent along with Okoye and Willis. So I dont think it was that big of a surprise. The bigger surprise too me was us taking Okoye over Willis.

I had Okoye rated above Brown, Ginn & Jamaal Anderson (3 prospects top 10 alone) I was elated when Atlanta choose Jamaal over Okoye surprised Miami passed on Quinn & DeMeco took Willis out of consideration.

here is NFL Draft Scouts top 10 draft board prior to the 07 draft-

I was very happy with Okoye I just was convinced Willis was going to be our pick while we were on the clock.

I remember how crazy the announcers were going when Miami picked Ginn. I also remember someone mentioning that Kubiak and Smith were dissapointed that Ginn was picked before us and that freaked me out.

Did anyone ever confirm that? Cant remember. If so thank god for Miami saving our asses.

one of us is full of it that's for sure.

Two first-round, early-entry juniors — Kansas CB Aqib Talib and Michigan WR Mario Manningham — have been removed from the draft boards of multiple NFL teams because of character concerns.

Grammer aside, I know what I see.

Speaking of getting it.....

“There is no way I’d touch (Talib),” one team told PFW. “He’s gotten into a lot of trouble, and he still does not get it.”

And, I never once posted about his character because I don't know him. I never once said he was a good or bad person. All I know is that he has a new kid, and is an All-American on the field, with the numbers to back it up, and you have yet to do anything to refute that or even attempt to disclaim it. You essentially say, "well, he's got big feet and he only ran a 4.4 with a 38" vertical. I mean, come on guys, who's grandma can't do that? I could send my 4 year old niece onto that field and get the same production out of her because of her feet." That's what you have become.

Nooooo...what I posted you have man who suppoedly has been running the "W" drill for eight to ten years and he looks like a fat out of shape nose tackle doing it. an all world athlete who can not run simple little junior high drill. Every body runs it... every level. you tell me why YTF...well now we know. He's just like I posted . a hard head who will never change. He doesn't have the discipline or comon sense required to be an NFL player... I don't care what his numbers or credentials are. I didn't know he was using and couldn't put it down....but I knew there was something wrong. Takes more than just numbers to make it.

With all respect, I'd take the Wiconsin kid and his torn aCL before I'd take Talib. I'd have to wait a year for 'ol Jake . But in the end I wouldn't loose any sleep over what and where the loose canon was on any given night or what he was up to.. Talib is boy looking to be man. and Quite frankly the franchise doesn't have the resources nor time to wait and see if he makes it. Looks like tragedy looking for a home to me. Take that tale of woe some where's else YTF. we've already seen it. we know how it turns out in the end.

All I can do now is laugh at your posts. I had two other posts in the other thread that were taken down within 10 minutes of being posted. Within 3 minutes of being up, I had two positive reps. Obviously, people agreed with what I said about you and Polo. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite the kindest words, but they were still message board appropriate I felt. mussop, I knew there was a thread somewhere around here that addressed my fear... (see gosselin draft thread)- funny it was you that actually started it!

Like you said it only takes like 2 'unexpected' players to get drafted ahead of some of them to push one down to us. If that player would be one we'd look at I think it could be a CB, which I'm still torn about our "timing issue" (with Dunta/Bennett/Reeves).

Now in this worse case scenario I think I would lean towards Calais Campbell with his size/upside to have playing RDE opposite Mario. In a perfect world I'd prefer to trade down but that's not an option.

I think Campbell and Cason would be my top two choices if this is how it played out.

Texans trade #18 overall and QB Sage Rosenfels to Kansas City for DE Jared Allen. At #18 the Chiefs select Jeff Otah to help block for Sage (groom Croyle another year or 2 if he's the man) and block for Larry Johnson and Kolby Smith. The get an instant starter at QB with Sage...

From our standpoint, all our top rated players were off the board and we get 2007's sack leader (15.5). Allen was drafted in the '04 class and is only 26 years old. We have Quinn as a decent backup QB, that I like.

So to our draft:
1. Traded for DE Jared Allend
2. Traded for QB Matt Schaub
3. LT Oneil Cousins
4. CB Antwuan Molden
5. RB Tashard Choice (Georgia Tech, Thomas Brown (Georgia), etc.
6. Traded for C Chris Myers
7. Gibbs pick of a LT/G, some offensive lineman to groom and provide depth

Outside of the 1st round, i think it's doubtful to have a LT replace Salaam next season.
If Dunta comes back healthy by the end of the season we have a solid bunch of CB's in Robinson, Bennett, Reeves, Molden (who could transition to FS too).
We are going to select a RB so we choose one in the 5th round that fits our system and splits carries with Green? Brown, Taylor, etc.
Gotta get more offensive linemen while we can take advantage of Gibbs' teaching.

Mario Williams--Amobi Okoye--Travis Johnson--Jared Allen

Mario Williams--Amobi Okoye--Travis Johnson--Jared AllenIf the draft went down just as you say, I would be ok I think. Not sold on COusins but would not be a reach at third. I'm ok with Molden and Choice although the rb slipped some early. My preference under your set up scenario would be to go

1st Jamaal CHarles this Rb is a perfect fit for what I understand new O will be. New thread on a mock out of Dallas has JC going at #20 so not necessarily too much of a reach and Chris Brown has size to be the power back unless he is a dud or IR like Green
3rd. Tony Hills has remain stable at 4th round but why take a chance. I just know more of him that Cousins. Hill might back- up for most of year (as would almost any other LT on board after 2nd). FYI, he did play more LT than Brandon. Just saying.
4th Trae Williams who should still be there but I like Tyvon Branch CB/FS/KR who can fly.
5th Darnell Terrell CB/FS
7th I expect Smith to perform magic again 'cause if he can get a starter @6th and can make Diles a starter in one year at OLB, well to keep impressing me Smith needs to find a pro-bowler here and I will be ok with any position. Come on Ric earn your paycheck!!

It's too much of a Charlie Casserly move to trade our first round pick and Sage Rosenels for Jared Allen. I'm not on board with this suggestion at all. Seriously, the cost-to-benefit of this move isn't worth giving up our first pick. It seems nearly ridiculous to give up the possibility of choosing a legit LT, CB, or FS for a position that's already good (admittingly not great). How can anyone sit there and say,

"Yes, let's continue to give Schaub mediocre protection from the left side and let's give Peyton Manning all day to burn our secondary. As long as our d-line is great...I'm stoked about that!"

I'm calling Casserly with this non sense.

Gotcha, but it wouldn't be so bad as a draft day trade when #18 is up and we have no viable options at any position much less LT or CB. We don't have a 2nd round so no need to worry there. If Chris Williams is sitting there at #18 you don't make the trade, you take Williams- but if there isn't a player graded out to near that spot, the trade could work.

Agreed. It's highly dependent on the circumstance the Texans are in at the time.

Out of that previously worst case mock, I think I would take Kenny Phillips, Felix Jones, Calais Campbell or Quentin Groves. Honestly though if you could trade back you would still be able to get one of these.

I that were to happen, it would be worse than showing up to a party with a boner while wearing sweat pants. Obviously a trade down would be the first option, but if no one is interested, Mayo, Merling, or Cason would be livable picks.

With all those players gone, the Texans would have 3 options

1. Take the highest rated defensive back
2. Take Mayo or Connor
3. Trade down
