I really like this move. The guy, if healthy, always finds openings in the field and was a an incredibly solid guy who could catch 6-7 balls a game. He will help Steve Smith alot

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Help is on the way for Steve Smith.

Determined to end the constant double-teams of their star receiver, the Carolina Panthers came to terms Monday with Seattle free agent D.J. Hackett on a two-year, $3.5 million deal.

Hackett is the second receiver the Panthers have added since missing the playoffs last season without a reliable second option after Smith. Muhsin Muhammad was signed last month.

Keary Colbert and Drew Carter, who shared the starting spot opposite Smith last season, were not re-signed after combining for a meager 70 catches.

Health is a legitimate concern, but to lock this guy up for two years is a fantastic move for the Panthers. I think he has the potential to be a top 10 WR.

I also like the fact that he's in another conference - this seems like the type of move the Titans should have been looking at. Maybe the Givens deal made them gun shy about injury risks, but at less the $2 Million per, it's worth taking.

I wonder if they'd be interested in reviving Charles Rogers Career. Low risk high reward.

I thought the Panthers got an absolute steal with Hackett. The guy is definitely a low risk high reward type player and cost next to nothing. I was very surprise to see him go that cheap. Nice move by the Panthers.

maybe steve smith will actually be a valuable fantasy commodity next season. He'll have a legit #2, and possibly Delhomme back healthy again. Carr ruined his season last year.

Agreed. As I said above, when the guy was healthy and in Seattles offense he was their TRUE #1 or #1a. He would get 6-7 catches and 100 a game. He is great at finding holes in the D and exploiting them and settling in them. If he can stay healthy, that is a dangerous tandem.

Hackett will take some of the pressure off of Steve.
