View Full Version : Texans looking good in FA.

I have to say that I am impressed with what the Texans have done so far in FA. And what they have done has been pretty much nothing. They did fill two holes at this point by signing former Cowboys CB Reeves, a position that was recently vacated by Von Hutchins, and, taking care of one of our own by signing Andre Davis to fill the void left by our dearly departed girlfriend beatin, pitbull chasin, and often injured kick returning, no ball catching Mathis.

Signing Davis was probably more of a splash than most people realized. He has got that sneaky fast speed that people talk about and he really is a legit #2 receiver. He can catch, he can stretch the field, and all last year he was reliable. Reeves I don't know much about but he can't be any worse than what we already had. Plus if Ray Rhodes and Hoke give there stamps of approval I am will to give Reeves the benefit of the doubt and will see how he plays in our scheme before passing judgment.

We are supposed to be meeting with Kevin Bentley today. Another not so big FA coming in looking to fill a void left by Anderson. I actually like this visit a lot better than the previous two years where we have attempted to sign depth with pre geriatric LB's looking to make one last paycheck on there way to retirement. Bentley is 28, 6-0 and 238. He should be able to come in and mix it up with Diles for a starting job.

I cant tell you how impressed i was that the Texans let Hadnot walk. He said all the right things giving you a warm and fuzzy for the guy, class act, under dog, and a great local boy comes home headline. Smith let the man get on a plane and try and get some other poor sucker to over pay for an average C/G. Hadnot = Milford Brown. I even chuckled when the Cardinals signed him thinking who in there right mind would want any former OLman from the worst unit in football. (Brown was cut the next offseason.) And that is also the what I thought when I heard Hadnot was coming in for a visit.

I am not however impressed with, and highly, highly, irritated that we have not signed Demps yet. The man just flat out plays ball, covers, hits, has size and speed. Our secondary instantly got better last year when Demps started and, IMO, was one reason our rookie CB starter was able to shine due to the fact that Demps had his back. Am I saying to back the dump truck of cash up? No. But I am saying get a deal done, or at least try to get one done. He is the best Safety that this franchise has ever had.

I am not big on high profile, big name FA's. Most of the time players are products of the system they play in, flourish in that system, and then listen to there agent and demand big money. More times than not it doesn't work out so well. However, I do like Turner for two reasons, I think he is a hard nosed runner that has the ability to carry the load, and it frees up our 18 position and makes it a little bit easier of a decision on what to do. Trading down or trading out of the first round and getting extra picks becomes a little bit easier. I also like the thought of a back field combo of Turner/Taylor.

So to sum it up, I like what we have done, we are still building and are not one or two players away from winning it all. We are not throwing money or giving up draft picks. That is something Casserly never understood. I don't think he ever really knew what the condition of his team was.

I agree , the Texnas are shopping the discount racks for depth and flexibility in the draft . I can't see throwing big bucks around like we used to on bad players or players who don't fit .

I'm glad we aren't buyers at this point, because of all the stupid money being thrown around... however, I hate that we've lost two key depth players in Hutchins and Anderson, and soon, probably a starter in Demps.

I think this is the problem with signing Demps. You will have "to back the dump truck of cash up" in order to get him. You see, Demps is in the driver's seat because he knows this is a weak draft for Safeties and there are not that many good FS available in FA either. Especially a FS who was selected a Pro Bowl alternate after playing only half the season, and playing with a cast on his arm!

I don't know if the Texans have been in talks with Demp's agent or not, but I just think he will be wanting too much. We'll see. JMHO!

Don't think this would be the case, it would be stupid to presume that anyone is going to be there at 18. I think that they build the team thinking that no one from the draft will play this season, then whatever you get is a bonus.

Agreed. There's no reason to bank on anybody being there at #18.

Regarding Hutchins: The only reason we really signed him in the first place was because of our injuries at safety (Glenn Earl, Brandon Harrison, and Brandon Mitchell). We are going to have all three of those guys back ready to compete by training camp. Hutchins role at safety has been filled with the rehabilitation of these three.

Hutchins only played corner because of the dissappointment of Faggins and Fletcher. Also when Dunta went down, he played more and more corner. I don't see why he would be a costly loss. He had his best season by far last year and he capitalized on that by signing with Atlanta.

Demps we need to resign.

That's not a very sound strategy.

Phillips is the consensus top safety, so there's no guarantee that he makes it to us, even if his projection is in the 20s.

If someone takes him, we better make damn sure we get Morgan or DeCoud in the 3rd or we just screwed ourselves at that position.

Am I the only one who thinks drafting Phillips over a CB , RB , or an OT would be a big mistake . Even if they don't resign Demps I would'nt draft Phillips in the 1st .

Except for the fact that Dunn hasn't missed a game in the past four seasons. But no, they shouldn't give anything significant to a 33 year old RB.

From what I've seen of Norwood, it would be pretty foolish to let him go before you see what he can do with more carries.

Demps is my biggest concern. I really liked what I saw from him (especially in the Denver game) and would be very disappointed if we let him go. We have enough holes to fill in the secondary as it is.

I previously made a post where I said I was disappointed with our low activity in FA. I've since changed my opinion after reading (like threads like this) how good it is that we've resisted making a big signing and continuing to build through the draft and trying to find diamonds in the rough with players in FA.

Speaking of building through the draft; Cleveland, no draft picks for the first three rounds, how disappointed would you be if you were a fan of theirs?

Phillips is way overated. Doubt if he gets picked in the first. This is the worst draft for safetys in 10 years. In a normal year he would be a late second or third round pick.

If Rashard Mendenhall, Leodis McKelvin, Mike Jenkins, Dominique Rodgers arent available we should trade down. Watch for Hills in the third if available.

Why not take a gander at Marlon McRee? He played well as a Texan and was kicked to the curb for one reason or another. Maybe it was because he actually had talent and made plays and wasn't an Asserley pick. Asserley couldn't have that. He had to go out and draft an injury prone safety out of Notre Dame who has now turned into an injury prone bust in the NFL. Just another brain dead move by a brain dead loser.

Thank God Rick has shown he has infinite more capability to draft and sign FAs. I will give him a pass on Green because it was pretty much low risk with high reward. Didn't work out that well, but his moves at least have some basis in logic, need, and value. Time will see if retaining Richard Smith was a good move even though that decision could be exclusively Kubiak's to make. One thing is for sure, if the defense continues to flounder near the bottom of the league, whoever ultimately decided to not Fire Richard Smith needs to be held accountable. I hope it doesn't come to that....
....but I'm not holding my breath.

Forget Demps lets go after Wilson, Eugene UFA Patriots.

If Demps is being pursued by the Dolphins, Demps is going there. If you have ever been to his website, you would see that he has MIAMI written all over him. That website is the epitome of self indulgence and narcissism. he would fit right in me thinks.

As for Wilson, you would think he would come in with at least a good work ethic and after all, he would be willing to do the 'extra' film work. I would have no problem with him joining the Texans but not if we have to overpay. He would at least have a shot at starting from Day One here, which is something you would think he covets. I would love to see us add Wilson and then go after Phillips at #18. Phillips is more of a sure thing than Cromartie, Jenkins, or Talib. We would then turn a team weakness into a team strength and we would have to hope our current stable of CBs can hold the fort till Dunta is ready. Unless someone just drops in our lap, we have to go defense with our only 1st Day Pick (barring trade down)

personally, I would rather have McRee over Demps especially due to the extra premium Demps is going to ask for due to his Alternate Pro Bowl-berth. Demps is just a popular guy around the league due to his mingling with the music stars and model 'elite' crowd. He probably throws a mean party too...dude is a playa but keeps it classy. He was good for us but far from PB quality....just proves the Pro Bowl is a popularity contest.

As far as Demps is concerned, it takes two to make a deal. link (http://www.willdemps.com/commerce/mywords/mywords.asp)

The Texans want me back and I think that is a desirable place to play, but I'm going to test free agency first and see what is out there. I am not ruling out a return to Houston by any means. I want to be in a position to be with a team for four or five more years and finish my career there. I think there are going to be some teams interested, so we will see what happens in free agency.

I've been through free agency before. I know that I want to be with a team that I'm comfortable with. The coaches in Houston want me back there, but we have to see how the business side of this works out.

I think I'm going to have a choice about where I'll play. I want to find a team that runs the right scheme for me, that has a winning attitude and that shows that it wants me.

I don't think he sounds as excited about returning to us as Davis and Kalu did/do. Appears to be a bit of equivocating going on.:hmmm:

So so far (and please add to this if I am leaving anyone out) in FA we have:

Acquisition or possible acquisitions:

Andre Davis - re-signed
Bentley - LB from Seattle
Reeves - CB from Dallas
Hadnot - visited Houston but is visiting with other teams - I still don't think we are done trying to get him if the price is right.
Demps - status unknown? We need to re-sign him is the consensus and I agree

Offered tenders:

C.C. Brown
Anthony Maddox
David Anderson
Earl Cochran
Joel Dreessen
Brandon Frye
Darius Walker

I would like to see all these guys re-sign and stay with the team.

Gone:
Von Hutchins
Charlie Anderson

Additional targets:
McCree - his name keeps coming up, please feel free to add who seems like a likely target.

Does that sum it up? I am not including cuts here, but just trying to keep a running tab of our activity. This is off the top of my head also. And I agree with the orginal post of this thread, I am glad we are not out spending crazy dollars and it appears Smithiak is being methodical about this whole thing. It's too easy to get caught up in the hoopla. Bentley is very intriguing to me, a great special teamer, good depth, nice price, I hope he can compete for a starting job.

I haven't heard anymore about the rumor of a veteran RB, and I still hope we land another DB in FA, and maybe a OL, hopefully a center.

All in all, I like the fact the FO is managing the funds well, not over spending or getting into to deep, looking for good value, and not giving away draft picks. They know we have to keep building through the draft as well.

Yes, they are RFA's.
Others here can explain it better than me but basically another team would have to offer that RFA more than what we offered on a tender. At which time we could match the other teams offer and still keep the guy. For another team to snag one of our tendered RFA's they would have to offer more than the Texans and the Texans would have to decide not to match it. In this case I believe a draft pick or a compensatory draft pick is given to the Texans.

He was released prior to the season, thus voiding his rookie contract. Frye then went to the practice squad and was re-signed to a one year contract to the roster for the last 8 weeks of the season. The Texans retain exclusive free agent rights to Frye by tendering a contract at the 2nd year minimum level.
