According to a source inside the Eagles with knowledge of the situation, former Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel has reached a deal to play in Philadelphia next year.

There are no specific details on the terms, years or compensation. Sports Illustrated’s Peter King reported Monday that the Eagles could offer the cornerback a five year deal worth up to $55 million, but cautioned that it might not be a great move for the team.

“This is a dangerous, dangerous move if the Eagles do it. I’ve been a Samuel guy for the last couple of years, because he’s a fearless competitor, but his play late last season, particularly when the Patriots couldn’t generate a consistent pass-rush on Eli Manning, was poor,” King wrote.

Free agency technically doesn’t start until 12:01 a.m. Friday. If the deal has already been reached, it may be considered tampering by the NFL. But tampering isn’t closely policed or enforced in the league.

Samuel played in all 16 games in 2007 and recorded six interceptions, one for a TD — against the Eagles. There had been many rumors involving his eventual landing place in free agency, including the possibility of New Orleans and Tampa Bay.

Yea I heard this is hours away from happening.

Anybody think Sheldon Brown could move to FS?

Then they would have

Lito Sheppard Sheldon Brown Brian Dawkins Asante Samuel.

Otherwise they have 3 probowl corners and one of them doesn't see the field in the base defense.

I think Lito Sheppard's on his way out of Philly.

Exactly, from what I hear he's on the trading block.

SAMUEL SET TO JOIN THE FLOCK

Various media reports, collected and referenced by our good friends at SportingNews.com, indicate that cornerback Asante Samuel will indeed sign a contract with the Eagles on Friday.

It's reportedly a five-year, $47.2 million deal. To the casual fan, that's short of the $10 million per year average from the eight-year, $80 million deal signed last year by Nate Clements of the 49ers. As everyone in PFT Planet knows, the Clements deal is actually seven years and $64 million, making it worth a hair over $9 million per year.

Samuel's deal carries an average of nearly $9.5 million. They could have added a phony final year that would have pushed the average to $10 million per year or more, and we respect both sides for doing what looks to be a "real" deal.

Also, there's a certain irony regarding the five-year duration of the contract. Typically, the Eagles like to lock players up for looooong periods of time. As it now stands, Samuel's deal will expire before the contracts signed by some of the young players who cashed in early.

And now he will be exposed as a mid range corner that played in an excellent system. But at least he cashed in.

"The Eagles wasted little time making an offer, reportedly worth around $57 million with $20 million guaranteed, on the first day of the free agent period."

The NFC East is getting even stronger and its just gonna make it tougher
for every team in that division to compile a playoff-caliber record. Our division is tough, but with the SB champs and all now in the NFC East it is
inarguably the NFLs top division.
