Now I understand that its the off-season but c'mon. Put a little effort into your sports section will ya?

I am not one of those people who bash on every media out let and lash out screaming about no respect or they don't get this or that right. However, John McClain is talking about getting ready for the combine and next months draft(which I thought was in April) during Anna-Megan's (who I really like) video they show a shot of her reading the Texans combine book to make it look like she is doing research and she is reading it back wards, and the guy who does the fan blog stated that Kubiak was a defensive minded coach. Also he has player draft ranking with Felix Jones rated 23rd overall and Mendenhall 26th. And under the top 20 FA he has got Trufant ahead of Samuel and at number 20 Larry Allen, who, I am pretty sure retired.

And ya I guess player rankings is more of opinion than science.

C'mon Chron, get your stuff together. I didn't pay any hard earned money to read all that for free on line. I expect a little more.

I hate the Off-season, I have way to much time on my hands.

I read that too, but I'll give TH the benefit of the doubt and say he probably meant defensive minded when it comes to the draft, meaning he likes to draft defensive players earlier than he would offensive.

I like Anna-Meagan. I really do. She has some journalistic skills.

I do think she is hampered by John McClain. Notice anytime that she is doing an interview with him she is jittery and and almost seems like she gets tongue tied.

Expect for reading the Texans combine book like it was from Japan, it was pretty good. Oh, and Gary, if your on camera, try not to look at her chest.

I don't think she will ever be successful as long as she is with McClain, he is over bearing in interviews and it turns her into a smiling chimp. It more looks like father take your daughter to work day than it does an interview team.

Besides, who would you rather get your sporting news from, McCain, or Anna? No one is going to agree with them anyway so it might as well be the pretty one.

We met her last season when hanging out with Texans Chick in the platinum lot. She's a really sweet kid, and I have no doubt that she is well intentioned.

BUT, having the desire to do something does not necessarily equate to actually being able to do it. I have no idea of her background or education, but there are many young people who dedicate their lives towards improving their journalistic skills. And these are the folks who need the breaks, because they are the ones with education and training on how to write articles with depth and knowledge. This is where Anna fails, because she just doesn't seem like she has the background to understand the nature of journalism. Maybe she does and relies on looks too much. But I can find bikini babes anytime. What I want is information and inside perspective that she has access to. I have yet to get it from her articles at this point.

I think she does just fine actually. She's certainly better than alot of these ex-ball-player-turned-sports-reporter types that always seem to get picked up by the stations.

If you didn't know she did bikini contests and 610 Ball girl stuff, would you think of her in the same way?

At least give the girl some credit...at least she trys! Hey...Jennifer Reyna was once a very green traffic reporter...now she's the best in town! :)

I didn't even know she did all that stuff until recently. I thought she was just some bimbo that was interning under John McClain. To be honest, I was a little surprised that her radio/modeling career was that extensive.

I tell you the difference, though. Our very own Texans Chick is a writer that truly seeks to educate and enlighten readers. I've learned from her and gained insight into our team because of her access. Anna should take a page from TC's book to see how to gain respect as a woman reporter in a men's league. It doesn't start with your boobs, either. It's all about brains and ability to process the depths of the sport.

Let me ask you this: would you feel the same way about Anna's reporting if she looked like Rosie O'Donnell?

p.s. I don't dislike Anna, because some of the stuff her and John do is quite silly and fun. I am merely speaking from a hardcore football fan's desire for knowledge and serious reporting. So please understand this is where I'm coming from, not just attacking AM for no reasons.

speaking of silly funny, this is one of my favs of John/Anna:

I don't disagree with you on the depth of football knowledge that Anna provides...shes new...and learning. If she could just get away from John McClain, where she can branch out a bit, I thinkk she would do well.

Wow, tough crowd.
I think Anna-Megan does a great job. Sports is supposed to be fun. I like the Chron videos she and The General do, they're sometimes informative especially to those of us not getting local Houston TV and sometimes the vidoes are so cheesy they are funny.

Humor's a good thing and I like how they interject it in the videos. And I'll say this, AM came out to the Battle Red Bunch tailgate this past season and was very nice, we all were laughing when she was brave enough to hop on the Battle Red Bunch Offical Texans Clown bike for a ride around the lot.

I thank the people who said the kind words about me earlier in this thread.

A-M is a perfectly nice person. I think she works really hard at the stuff she is doing and those who get too over the top bitter about it are jealous of what she is able to get to do and the access that she has.

I can't say that straight out of college I would be any good at the stuff she is doing, and I think it's great that she is doing stuff she really cares about. It's not easy to be someone on camera or opine on sports, (in a predominantly male field) because a lot of people have built-in biases against that.

It takes a long time to build up good will and respect among the people who read and watch what you do. This allows you to get away with more stuff. McClain has gotten to the point of his career where he has done everything he pretty much wants to do, so basically now he doesn't care if people think he looks goofy dressing up with Santa.

I like some of the stuff she does, and other things not so much. Pretty much like just about everyone at the Chronic. Pretty much like it is with life in general. I do think that she works pretty hard at it, and I wouldn't want to have to spend the effort she does.

Neither?

My point is, and maybe I'm wrong, but I would think one doesn't have very much journalistic respect when you got your job by doing bikini and lingerie appearances in sports bars?

Eh, I don't care how someone gets their job as long as they do their job well. I am guessing there were other things in her resume that helped as well. I bet she had a lot of fun with being a sports promo girl.

Lately, I've noticed that she has a more traditional/professional hair cut. Eh, personally I liked it better before, but that's what happens with females who do anything. Not only do people pay attention to the content of what they do, but also how they dress and how they wear their hair.

But we as a society judge books by their covers. You can go through life missing out on fun things to do and opportunities to meet people because you fear what people might think about it, or you can just try to have a positive attitude about stuff and embrace opportunities as they come to you.

What I don't get about A-M is the radio stuff. She's literally the worst thing I've ever heard on the radio. McClain goes out of his way to set her up with questions and discussions and it's always the same response: "Ah uh, okay well let's go to Steve on the south side."

She could get better - but right now she doesn't belong anywhere NEAR a radio microphone.

TC I understand what you are saying, and some of made jokes that well maybe we shouldn't have but the fact is she does a lot of fluff pieces and that also does not lead to much credibility.

As long as she is in Houston she will never be taken seriously.

Of course I edit my quote because the first part was a cheap shot at humor. This statement will hold true because of what she did prior to joing the chron and also I do not think she is able to live on her own merits of what she does because one the assignments and her being so closely labled to McClain whose best days are behind him.

As long as she is being asked to do stupid music videos she will never get to the next level of sports journalism. A major market is not usualy the best place to hone your craft.

I would suspect that 99.9% of the people who read her stuff or see her videos would have no idea about her background. And probably fewer would see her pictures but for enterprising internet peoples.

Many high profile public females had their starts in unconventional ways. Lots of cheerleaders, models, waitresses etc. Probably most of those people would prefer the things they did when they were starting out didn't show up later. And few people start out doing what they are doing without making any mistakes.

I read sometimes the comments in A-M's blog, and appreciate that she is unfailingly cheerful to people who can be grotesquely unkind or psychoey lecherous.

She doesn't pretend to be an expert in anything. She provides an enthusiastic Houston fans perspective of things, and has able to get more access than the typical fan. I just don't see why people feel the need to get mean about her. She's not pretending to be Ms. Expert, and she is unfailingly nice, so bashing her to me is a little like kicking puppies. There's no point in it.

It's easier and more fun to do reports when you have a sidekick. Solo radio is really hard to do, and just being a single talking head can't be fun either. I just don't see what the federal issue is with what A-M does. She does some goof stuff, and she does some regular interview stuff. If that's not the direction you like for the paper to take, well that's not her fault.

I think there are much greater issues with the Chronic sports page than sidekick choices. Maybe some don't see her as credible, but I just wish her the best of luck and to continue to have fun with something that isn't trying to be brain surgery.

Sometimes we can care so much about what other people might think of what we are doing, we can be afraid of just having fun. As long as it isn't something that is hurting anybody, no big deal.

Or maybe we should have a rule that if you are a sports promo girl in your youth, you should never aspire to do anything different than that.

While I have made a few comments some may not like or find in poor taste I hope I have never been gortesquely out of line. I have a degree in broadcast journalism and have worked and Mix 96.5 and at KKZR Z-rock in Houston and also at a classic rock station in baumont so knowing all to well the pitfalls of being on air, I have never criticized the radio part of her job, but the videos ( I know that is what the chron gives her to do) and some of the interviews I have seen her do just seem to be more fluff than stuff.

The only reason I know of what she did in the past is because of the photos that were plastered all over 610's website.

We should all aspire to do what makes us happy no matter what some of dumb guys say and or may think in a thread. I just think she needs to take more control of what she does and try and get away from the fluff and try and become her own person other than some sidekick relegated to having no substance and writing stuff that sometimes you just think what was she thinking. That is one reason I said about being considered a legit news person by leaving Houston for a little while and then coming back.

I just get this impression of her as the dingy chick trying to use looks versus talent. Part of that is her own doing (like you said in changing a lot about the way she wears her hair and to the way she dresses) and a great deal more is in the way the chron has her doing things.

I have sorta repeated myself but I am not making my words as well thought out right now as I would like.

I was not saying that you were being disgusting towards her. I was just saying in general that if you look at the comments over at her blog, some people are just donkeys in the manner that they leave comments.

Maybe she doesn't want to be considered a stuffy journalist. Maybe she enjoys the opportunity she has to do sports stuff in the city she loves. Pretty simple.

As for her pictures being all over the 610 website, as I recall, they aren't promo'd that way--that they are in some flicker set from a while back.

Not really an issue though.

I could'nt agree more.I cannot listen to the Juggs and Jowls show for more than a few minutes at a time without switching stations or turning the radio off altogether in disgust. The thing is, I am more than willing to give them a chance in the hope that I can get some useful NFL info due to McClain's access(?).But most of the time I would prefer to listen to fingernails on a blackboard.I feel like like my IQ level drops a few points every time I listen to thier show.I wonder how long 610 will give this pairing before they pull the plug on it?The worst part of it is that there are probably several other women in this market with better broadcasting skills and a deeper knowledge of sports that don't have this opportunity open to them because they don't have the connection to McClain and as nice a rack as AM.

I think Anna-Megan is awesome. I think she does a great job at chron.com. She asks the questions. Others do the answering. I haven't heard her on SR610. I'm at work during her show.

I spoke to her for an hour or so before the Saints game and found her to be very interesting, in addition to being quite easy on the eyes. She's welcome back at Texan Mojo anytime. We have low expectations for our media. It is less about information and more about entertainment these days. I get why the Houston Texans fanbase can be so ignorant at football games. This isn't an insult, but merely a simple fact. Hearing thousands of casual fans scream for our offense while they are on the field speaks for itself.

I will have to disagree with this. If you want information that is facts and nothing but the facts you read Manfull. If you want opinions and speculation you read McClain. Anna does a good job. I like her. She is from here, went to school here, works here.

Better than that guy on 610, Rich Lord? Who is from NY and has said many times that he is not a die hard Texans fan. He like them but does not live and die by every play. I don't want to here that. I want my media people to be just as passionate about our teams as we are.

Better than that guy on 610, Rich Lord? Who is from NY and has said many times that he is not a die hard Texans fan. He like them but does not live and die by every play. I don't want to here that. I want my media people to be just as passionate about our teams as we are.

I have to disagree with this sentiment.Just because a person is from here, went to school here and works here, that does'nt excuse them from performing thier job at a professional level. She does'nt come across as very prepared on the radio.I can't vouch for her print work, because I don't read her blog.In a perfect world Rich Lord would be a passionate Texans fan,but at least the guy seems to know his stuff. And unlike A-M,Rich Lord started at the bottom(small radio station) when he came to Texas(I think Alvin or Angleton)before he was allowed to run his mouth on a major station in a large market. I can get passionate ill-informed opinions at any sports bar in town, I don't need to here it from media personalities. And the fact that Rich Lord is from NY is relevant because....?

My momma said opinions are like Butt holes, everybody has got one and they usually stink. Your never going to get everyone to agree with your opinions and thats what McClain and Anna do, opinion pieces. Sure they throw in some stats but then they put in there two cents about what the Texans needs are and who they should draft or pick up in FA. Basically they do what we do on this message board only they get paid for it and have full access to the teams.

We are just the opposite, I can't comment on the radio show cus I don't think I have ever heard it. The other stuff she does is entertaining.

Not NY specifically, just the fact he was not from here and reports on and gives his opinion on a team that, at the end of the day if he didn't get his check in Houston he could care less about the Texans.

I will say that if you see the pics of the ball girl stuff, etc and the girl on the videos and other Chron things, they don't really look like or seem to represent the same person. If she grows in her job, more power to her. Right now, from the stuff I've seen and heard, she just seems like McClains goofy side kick. But alot of sports talk and sports media does the schtick these days...no offense TC, I like your reporting. SOME do the schtick though. So if its her way in and it works for her...then it was a success.

Honestly though I haven't seen or paid attention to a lot of her work so its a limited opinion.

Rich? Is that you?

I can say that some of the most silly things I've ever heard from a radio host have come out of Rich Lord's mouth. His best role was as the strawman argument creator with Charlie Pallillo. You know, Rich says something hot headed and silly, and Charlie tells him why he is a dunce, without actually using that word.

At least A-M doesn't pretend like she knows all the answers. Or act like a schoolgirl when the subject of Vince Young comes up.

Her role is limited. She makes it easier for McClain to do his business. No big deal.

Overall, my biggest problem with the sports coverage in the paper is that it seems to just rehash what is being said in the press conferences and press releases without providing any outside critical football analysis.

And what they seem to think is critical football analysis is just right brain kind of complaining blather. For example, I am a big fan of Mike Sando, used to cover the Seahawks and now covers the NFL for ESPN. When he discusses football subjects, he gives you information that you might not have thought about before. Sometimes with numbers, sometimes not. More of a left brain analysis.

Or Michael David Smith, who writes everywhere, including FanHouse does a series called "Every Play Counts" for FootballOutsiders where he focuses on one player and says what is happening.

Any number of teams have columnists that provide actual analysis about the local teams.

The Chronicle has nobody like that. And even if they tried to be more that way, I'm not sure that they have anyone there where I respect trust their football analysis. McClain doesn't claim to be a football analyst, his strength is knowing people and knowing what the gossip is. And there is a place for that, but we should see more than just that.

In November of 2007, Richard Justice was still maintaining that Mario Williams was "doing a great impression of a sixth rounder." I couldn't fathom what he was watching, and figured he was only saying those sorts of things because Williams wasn't terribly engaging with the local media and RJ was still mad about no VY/Bush pick. It wasn't until mid December that he apologized.

McClain did have an article to inform the more stupid of the readers, and maybe Richard Justice, that you know, defensive ends tend to get the sacks in bunchs and that even great defensive ends can go for games without getting sacks.

I was emailing back and forth with a national columnist who was hoping to visit the Texans last preseason and was trying to get more information about the team before he came. He said it was difficult getting a flavor of the team when in the offseason, there were mostly just very fluffy articles written about how Matt Schaub is really a leader.

Even basic stuff they get wrong. Like last year's Texans preview said that the Texans were running primarily a zone blocking scheme. That was factually incorrect, but most people reading the paper wouldn't know that because they don't follow the team closely.

The closest you get to any sort of left brain commentary is Lance Zierlein, but he's blogging and only writes for the paper on fantasy football matters.

Could not agree more TC. Lord drives me nuts. He can get on a tangent about some pretty simple sports ideas and just go off....as you said..hot headed and silly...and it really is hard to listen to. I didn't like Charlie as much then because he just seemed surly having to be Lord's smart side man. Charlie still is a little pompous but he has improved on his own and knows sports. Some weeks I think I'm going to go over my text limit capabilities when I turn it on Rich and Matt. The stuff they say really is off. That is when I go right back to Charlie.

This is why I am so critical of McClain and AM because all they do is the fluffy crap. I do not want another music montage, I want actually in-depth interviews and analysist.

I will have to disagree with this. If you want information that is facts and nothing but the facts you read Manfull. If you want opinions and speculation you read McClain. Anna does a good job. I like her. She is from here, went to school here, works here.

You are proving my point. > " It is less about information and more about entertainment these days."

I speak from old school perspective, when this town used to have two newspapers and sports talk radio only talked about....sports.

There is a nationwide movement, perpetuated by Clear Channel and other mega-corporate conglomerates, that is pushing "guy talk" to our traditional sport talk radio. "Guy talk" encompasses much more than just sports, including movies, dating advice, pop culture, etc., and nearly every radio show now has a 'bimbo in the box'. This is entertainment radio, not aimed at a specific hardcore sportsfan audience, but rather trying to appeal to the broadest audience. This, of course, means the casual fan.

I have reached a point where I now realize that the majority of Houston sports fan are on the casual side. Arrive late, leave early, front-running, only supporting winning teams, etc., they are easy to spot.

This is not meant as an insult, but rather an observation on my part. So when I mention that 'reporting' by some of our local media is catered more towards entertainment perspectives rather than information, this is where I'm coming from.

To each his own and all that jazz, but I still have a right to an opinion and I lament the decline of the hardcore fanatic in this city. We are few in number these days. I'm not saying we are better/worse than anyone else, but we simply cannot be expected to be seen in the upper echelon of sports cities when our fan base fail to support our teams through thick and thin.

As far as our ignorant fans goe at games its up to us as fans who go to the games to educate them. I have made people stand up before and scream. I will do it again.

You can take a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

Good luck in educating the majority of casual fans. It is a noble, if not lost, cause.

Overall, my biggest problem with the sports coverage in the paper is that it seems to just rehash what is being said in the press conferences and press releases without providing any outside critical football analysis.

I agree with your entire post. This is my sentiments exactly.

Agreed. Unfortunately, while I still think Palillo is hands down the best local talker, he's still better with the right partner. Didn't listen to Lord much with Van Der Meer, but now he's with Matt Jackson, and it's really tough to tell which one's the dunce.

I never heard Charlie P. with Rich Lord (I've only listened to him since 790 started) but I think he's very good at what he does. He does seem like he has quite the ego at times, but overall I don't really think that interferes with the way he takes callers. If a caller makes a dumb comment than he'll usually call them out if they can't make some type of reasonably claim as to why they think it's true. I also like his show because there isn't any homer-ism aspect to it.

I've heard him described as arrogant - maybe sometimes, but I like smart and arrogant more than...well - not smart and anything else you combine with it.

I like LZ alot too - in some areas (football for example), more than Charlie. Only drawback (IMHO) is Granato. I was hoping Lance would go in another direction when he parted ways with 610, but it wasn't to be. Even at that, it's still the best morning show by far.

He is a jerk and rude and talks down to callers. If you do not like people calling into your radio show then why answer the phone or for that matter get into sports talk radio.
