Quarterback Trent Green and wide receiver Marty Booker are among nine players cut by the Miami Dolphins.

Other notable cuts by the Dolphins on Monday include tackle L.J. Shelton and defensive tackle Keith Traylor. Both played key roles for Miami this past season, when the Dolphins sputtered to a franchise-worst 1-15 record.

The Dolphins also waived tackle Anthony Alabi, defensive tackle Anthony Bryant, tackle Marion Dukes, defensive tackle Marquay Love and tackle Joe Toledo.

The Panthers release Morgan & Wahle (http://www.panthers.com/Common/Article.aspx?id=30620).

The Carolina Panthers have released linebacker Dan Morgan and guard Mike Wahle, the team announced Monday.

"These were tough decisions, because Dan and Mike have been valuable members of our team and have done everything we have asked of them over the years," said head coach John Fox. "They are both very dedicated to the game of football and earned the respect of everyone who worked with them."

Bonus points: Holdman's also an Aggie.

Not to mention a native Houstonian.

EDIT:

From Wikipedia:
Holdman was drafted in the 1999 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. That year, Holdman started as nickel linebacker and on special teams before landing a starting spot on the weak side. He played in all 16 games, and had 75 tackles. He also had two sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 11 special teams tackles. Holdman had a superb sophomore season in 2000, in which he had 87 tackles. He also added 9 tackles on special teams. In 2001, Holdman came back strong after rehabilitating his injured left knee, starting 15 of 16 games, recording a career-high 145 tackles and 3 forced fumbles. Unfortunately, in 2002, he started the first four games before suffering a season-ending right knee injury. In his fifth season with the Bears in 2003, he returned from a knee injury to start 13 games and totaled 79 tackles. Holdman was then traded to the Cleveland Browns in 2004, where he appeared in all 16 games, starting 14, and posted 110 tackles, a half sack and three pass breakups. He then moved to the Washington Redskins in 2005, where he played in 14 games, starting 7 of them. On April 26, 2007 he signed a one-year deal with the Broncos. On February 11, 2008 the Broncos released him.

Glass Joe's been injured since the day Miami drafted him.
"For a big man, Toledo is exceptionally athletic, with an ideal body for an offensive tackle. At his collegiate workout day, he reportedly ran a 4.76 in the 40, which is unheard of in a man his size. His athleticism is balanced by his lack of experience at tackle and it will probably take time to develop him into a complete offensive lineman. "

Yea that's his Achilles’ heel for sure, he's very injury prone. In college and then the NFL.
But because of his athleticism he's got ZB written all over him and new OC &
OLine guru Gibbs may like his physical profile enough and decide the Texans should try to sign him.

yeah Parcells is getting rid of any players that we had around because Saban and Cameron just liked them, and it was hurting the roster a bit just to have these players around. mostly guys like Toledo, Alabi, potentially Lemon.

Beck is the main guy right now i believe. i can't see Parcells going QB with the first pick, not with the defense in the current shape its in, and with some great prospects at the top of the draft.

The Atlanta Falcons continued their franchise makeover in earnest on Friday, releasing tight eend Alge Crumpler, quarterback quarterback Byron Leftwich, offensive tackle Wayne Gandy and four other players.

Teh team also announced it had released cornerback Lewis Sanders, wide receiver Jamin Elliott, linebacker Marcus Wilkins and defensive tackle Rod Coleman.

"This is a difficult day for the entire organization," Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff said in a statement from the team. "A number of these players have contributed to this organization on and off the field at a high level and we greatly appreciate their efforts. These decisions weren't easy, but we felt they were necessary to build a team in the long-term best interest of the Falcons and its fans."

Too bad Dunn didn't get cut. It was a long shot but you never know nowadays. He would be a good stopgap in case Green goes down again or is not even retained.

I also think Julius Jones could be a guy we could get on the cheap. I think he just got in teh doghouse and never really got going in dallas. I wouldn't give him big money but I would give him a deal that is incentive laden and he would know he would at least get a fair chance to get the job based on our current talent level. He has some skills and doesnt have that much tread on his tires at all....

wow, I'd have to see how much his position gets paid for the Franchise tag but I don't think he is worth franchise money.
Since the cap went up over $100 million, the franchise tag has been used on non-franchise type players like Briggs, Jeff Backus, Charles Grant, Cory Redding, and Justin Smith. Why? Because NFL teams have so much cap room, they can afford to pay 2nd tier players top money for a season without the long term commitment.

The franchise tag was designed to be a double edged sword, player movement is restricted as is the cap flexibility of the team. That's no longer the case, and that's why teams can hand out the tag to good, but not great players. The cost of the franchise tag has yet to catch up to the rise in the salary cap.

....................Huh:thinking: .........Maybe a good thing? I think he's like 33. You cant just draft a CB again in the 4th and expect the same results. If you scout well, then it can happen.

But the best bet to get a top CB would be in the 1st round.

Guys fall to the 4th round for a reason, and it usually isnt because teams think they will be NFL starters. Sometimes they are right and sometimes a kid proves them wrong. But the sooner if the draft that you address the position, the better chance you have of finding a gem.

True, but two key factor though.....I'm talking 3rd round, not fourth....and we've proven time and time again that we can scout extremely well. So far in just two years our scouts have helped us pick up JJ, Owen Daniels, Eric Winston, Charles Spencer, and Fred Bennett in the 3rd rounds or later. Our track record says that we CAN do well again, and most importantly, the 3rd round CB wouldn't be expected to play the first year, he would be behind Bennett and Ty Law in this scenario, with Dunta (possibly) back before the season is out. Those are three mentors that could bring out the best in a rookie.

Its all good in theory as long as we snag the right kid (which the Texans have proven is possible).

I wouldnt expect Bennett to mentor anyone since he is just one year into the league, but a guy like Ty Law could teach them both a couple of tricks.

He's a popular player amongst the fans, and for the most part everyone thinks he was worth the money. I don't think he was overpaid, because that's just how much premiere CBs cost, since so few ever hit the open market. We're still in good cap shape (about 26 mil under the cap right now).

CloakNNNdagger
02-16-2008, 09:48 AM
Ty Law has lost a step in coverage in the past couple of years. He's no longer the brute CB "enforcer" that he built his reputation on. However, he's by far no slouch. And what happens when a great CB shows some signs of "aging"???..............he can often find himself a very comfortable spot at FS, thus, productively extending his career. So as I see it, a reasonable deal for Law gets you a still way better than average CB, the versatility to potentially fill another need position (FS),.......... and, arguably, brings with him an "old school" locker room presence in the package of one heck of an experienced mentor.

I know there was some bitterness between Law and the Pats organization when he left. But with Samuels leaving for free agency, Law is an excellent stopgap while another corner is being groomed. I really expect Law to end up back in Foxboro, unless his former DB coach Eric Mangini makes an offer he can't refuse.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3247718

WOW! Those are some pretty big cuts. :thisbig:
The Falcons don't like their aggregate team character and are imploding the team with locker room chemotherapy.

He was good in Pittsburgh, not too good in his time with the Chiefs. No better than Greenwood would be for us.

speaking of concussions, Thomas has his own share of 'em. perhaps he can be some sort of player-coach elsewhere, but can't see him making a real impact.
He should've retired two years ago. I don't see how he's going to live a productive life after football anymore.

Living in KC, I can tell you Bell has lost whatever fire he had, he is often last to the ball. as far as Ty law he has lost at least a couple steps and when he does get aggressive he is prone to over commit and give up a play rather than shut it down. I would much rather see Randall Gay in a Texan's uniform. then draft a young CB in the later rounds along with a safety. I think RB or LT should be our targets for the 1st round, and if none are available, look for a trade down. I also heard Ryan Lilja was released. He would be some depth for us at guard. and could probably cover Tackle in a pinch. Anyone heard anything about him lately?

Its all good in theory as long as we snag the right kid (which the Texans have proven is possible).

I wouldnt expect Bennett to mentor anyone since he is just one year into the league, but a guy like Ty Law could teach them both a couple of tricks.

True, but from what I've heard, he has a great work ethic, and can show a rookie how to be a "rookie". Some rookies come in and slack off, but Demeco and Bennett are the latest rookies that came in and can show how to make a difference. Law and DRob would be the mentors, but Bennett could lead by example also. I really like that guy on our team, and I think he'll be here a long time to come as he develops into a force at CB.

Oh I agree with all that. Definitely.

Ryans was kinda thrown into that leadership role, being the MLB, and he has handled it perfectly.

With Bennett, it would be great if he could step up & mentor a new kid coming in, but I wouldnt be too upset if he cant teach the kid the same stuff that Law or Dunta can.

If the Chiefs cut Samie Parker I would take a go at him for low money.

As far as Ty Law, I think it would be a good fit for a one year deal. Others were talking about the possibility of him and Dunta mentoring a 3rd or 4th round rookie cornerback. I think that is a good idea, but imagine if it were a 1st round corner. You'd have a guy who could play nickel or maybe even get starter time while D-Rob is out, and then you'd have a talented nickel corner/ starter after Ty Law leaves.

ChampionTexan
02-18-2008, 12:42 PM
I spent quite a bit of time watching the Chiefs this year, and I just don't think Law has enough left to even bring in as a Nickel/Dime on-field coach. As far as the mentoring thing is concerned, we have Dunta, and we have Ray Rhodes - I don't favor wasting a roster spot and cap space (even the veteran minimum) on TL.

Muhsin Muhammad was the latest to get cut. I'm assuming he could be had at a decent price considering his numbers have been dropping. I'm sure though, if he had a decent QB throwing to him, he could be a great WR2/3 if Andre Davis decides to go elsewhere. (I really hope he doesn't, I'd MUCH rather have AD). I'm just saying!

Yup, bye bye Carr-

Also Tuesday, the Panthers released quarterback David Carr, who disappointed in his first season as a backup to Jake Delhomme.

Carr was let go a year after he signed a two-year, $6 million deal with the Panthers following a five-year stint as a starter in Houston. Carr struggled so badly when he took over for the injured Delhomme last season that he was eventually demoted to third-string.
