View Full Version : JASON BABIN: Bring him back?

I was very disappointed when we traded him for Boulware earlier this year. Not because I had anything against Boulware, but because I truely felt that he was going to have a breakout type of year in our system. I am intrigued by Boulware & hope he gets a lot of playing time in the last game so that we can see if he's all he's cracked up to be.

But, back to Babin. I don't know what's happened in Seattle (2 games played). I don't believe he's been injured or anything & that makes me wonder if they may release him, or be willing to trade him for a late round pick (5th or 6th).

With the way he was playing in the preseason, I was starting to drool at the possibility of him playing on the right side, which would leave Mario on the left side where he does the most damage. Weaver hasn't done anything to impress me this year & he's the highest paid player on our roster.

I'd really like to bring him back if it's possible, or go out & get another stud DE so that we can put some consistent pressure from the opposite side of Mario. That should cause Okoye to get more sacks up the middle. Or, at least that's what I think it would do.

Anyone else wish we had Babin back?

Not really.

I thought Babin had the best preseason of any of the DE. We may sign him again, but it won't be for very much money. Especially, when you consider Weaver's contract
3/11/2006: Signed a five-year, $26.5 million contract. The deal included a $12.5 million signing bonus. 2007: $2.5 million, 2008-2009: $3.5 million, 2010: $4 million, 2011: Free Agent

What a bust Weaver's been. The guy never pressures the QB

I want Babin.

I'm sick of Weaver's lack of pressure.

We all knew when we signed Weaver that he wasn't going to pressure the QB much. He does what he does, and at the time, he was the best our money could buy.

this is kind of a tangent but i wished/hope somebody would ask gary what he thinks about how the weaver thing has played out and what he thinks the future will hold for him... granted gary wont tell all or anything but it would give us some idea about how he views him..

maybe boulware can become a decent olb?

I doubt that we bring Babin back, and we might let go of Weaver this offseason. I was never a big fan of Babin, and never understood why we drafted him, but I wasn't hurt or shocked that the team made a move with him back in August. We sould have resigned Peek in the offseason.

Maybe we should draft a defensive end with our first round draft pick. :-)

We drafted Jaon Babin because Don Cappers believed he was the next Kevin Green. And if he'd of even been close to that production...I would of been up set by the trade. The first words out of capper's mouth at the podium when they drafted JB was Kevin Green. He was dead wood. Trim it, move on.

Babin wasn't going to make much of an impact going to Seattle that late in the season. If he had gone to a poor team, or injuries had struck, then maybe there would have been an opportunity for him.

I think Babin would be able to fill a niche role for us as a pass rush specialist. The game is finally starting to click for Mario, so with him on one side and Babin on the other, I think the pass rush would be better. Weaver has demonstrated that he is incapable of taking advantage of having Mario opposite him. Kalu is the only other DE we have that generates a pass rush. Orr disappeared completely this year.

If we got Babin back, it would have to be a reasonable contract.

Don't forget about Earl Cochran. He has done a decent job of rushing the passer when he has been in.

Call me crazy but if we can get a premier bookend for Mario I would snap him up. Pressure from the front four is crucial to a teams defensive success and everyone knows defense wins championships.

agreed.. if gholston or campbell are there and they're BPA, take em... weaver has 1 sack over 2 yrs

I don't think you are crazy. If we can get a premier DE with the first round draft pick, we should definitely do it. However, if we can get a premier CB with the first pick, I think that is a higher priority, and will probably be the way we end up going.

Just to play the devils advocate, premium DE are better value than premium CBs, just look at Denver, Bly and Bailey are an elite tandem and there defense is pretty bad because their line is rubbish (Dumervil the exception)

Agreed. While we have improved our pass rush, we still need more improvement. With the improved pass rush at the end of the year, the line made the d-backs look much better. Then we didn't get much pressure on Peyton and our d-backs look below standard once again.

and to take it further- we have a much higher possibility of having a second good cb (dunta returning somewhere like he was and freddy) than two bookends (weaver/earl suddenly breaking out)

Sounds like a plan, but can someone mark this or sticky it for when we draft another D-lineman in the first round.... the media and some fans would have a field day / jump off a cliff with the selection.

its alright... the way things have worked out with mario, amobi and to a lesser extent travis, they'll have some credit to work with if it does play out like that

I believe there will be some good DE options available through Free Agency to allow the Texans to pursue other more pressing needs, like a quality OLT or something else other than a D-Lineman, with their first pick, so I doubt we will see the Texans draft a D-Lineman with their first pick.
