Lions pair wants out of Detroit
Posted: Wednesday December 05, 2007 07:23AM ET

Neither player will say it publicly, but two of Detroits best offensive players -- receiver Roy Williams and running back Kevin Jones -- are counting the days until they can leave Detroit. While the losing seasons have taken their toll on the two players, there are other reasons why they want to leave the Lions organization and their motives arent exactly the same. Williams and Jones, who were both first-round draft picks in 2004, will become unrestricted free agents after next season and sources close to the players say theyve had enough and want out. At one time, Williams embraced the teaching of coordinator Mike Martz and even endured his sometimes abrasive coaching style, but that situation has changed. Williams has offered thinly veiled criticisms recently of Detroits offensive game plan and his role in it.Still, the overriding factor for Williams is that he simply wants to go home or get closer to it. The one thing you learn about Williams very quickly is that he loves Texas and would love to return to his home state.

man, WR has to be the one area that we actually have depth...but I'd take Roy W. in a heartbeat...of course, he's probably talking about the Cowboys.

I would assume that (Cowboys), since we've never not had one of those losing seasons he's tired of.

Andre Johnson and Roy Williams side by side would be sick.

I dunno if anybody else remembers, but Charley Casserly desperately wanted Williams to come out early, after his junior year, so the Texans could take him.
Had he done that it's very likely the Texans would have taken him instead of
AJ with their #3 pick in 2003. Obviously we've been happy with AJ, but
the Texans really wanted Williams more than anybody back in '03 as recall except perhaps Willis McGahee. But McGhee blew his knee out in a post-season bowl game and instantly became too much of a risk for the #3 overall.

Roy Williams next to AJ would be sick ..... for the four or five games that he'd be healthy.

He's not that injury prone, AJ has missed more games than him actually.

I think they come here next year...Bears, too. Texans should be on roadies to Minn & Green Bay.

I think you're right, because we played the Pack on Sunday Night, and Dre pretty much made the pro-bowl against the Vikes. It would be awesome if we got Roy and AJ together, imagine the possibilities. But, I think he might be inclined to rejoin his old college buddy, I hope not though.

He doesn't really miss a lot of games, but he always has a sprained ankle, pulled hammy, or similar. When he isn't dinged, he's exceptional.

While I would certainly welcome him, it would be more or less piling onto our WR depth. Walter and Davis have really stepped up and helped form us into a team that passes the ball well (when the o-line is giving humpty-dumpty enough time). I would say that WR is the last place that we need to spend cap dollars on.

I love the job Walter and Davis have done, but to pass up Roy Williams for them? Hes pretty damn good. Just my opinion.

Well, the thing is that he would be expensive. We have a lot of holes to patch up in the offseason, and to use the cap room to build up the one solid department we have would seem unwise to me. Now, if we could squeeze him in there without cutting into our offseason needs, then I would certainly be open to snagging him.

He will go to the Boys. Terrell Owen's replacement (Owens IS getting up there in years ya know).

Shame..it would be very interesting to see AJ and Williams side by side. But we have so many more pressing needs.

Use the money ON THE ONLINE! AJ and Roy with no Oline would just make us the "down south Lions".

There's been no decline in Terrell's play..he wouldn't replace him. T. O. may be getting up in years but he's also one of the most if not the most well conditioned athlete in the league. He's got a number of years left.

If anything he'd replace Crayton who I believe will be a free agent next year...

He also isnt going to be a FA till nest off season, if I read it correctly. After that, you make a competitive offer but dont break the bank. If you can get him for average money, then he would be a huge upgrade over Walter and Davis.

Everyone keeps mentioning Davis, but remember he is a FA after this year, so he may not be back. So there could be an opening later for Williams (but I would bet on him going to Dallas, or Detriot Franchising him).

The Colts manage with Wayne and Harrison......and Manning at that. I'd assume that Johnson and Williams would be cheaper than Wayne and Harrison. If Indy can do it, why not us?

RW is probably the best player on that team ..... you can put money on him being franchised if he cant / wont come to terms on a contract . I think a player can be franchise tagged in two consecutive seasons ..... So he wouldnt be an UFA until 2010 ......

If the Texans spend money for upgrading the internet connection, we are in trouble. j/k;)

Roy is a good WR but I agree we need to spend money to upgrade the O-Line and Running Back. I think we found WR depth this year.

OL,RB, and CB's!

I agree with the others, for the type of money it would take, I would rather it be spent on the offensive line and/or running back. The WR depth is good, even without Davis.

Roy ain't coming to Houston, that is for sure. He probably wants out of Detroit, who doesn't*, but not so that he can play for the Texans. Just a wild guess.

With the amount of coin it would take to get Roy, we would be inable to reup some of our players that are going to be Free Agents. We have so many players on short term deals, and some of those guys have excelled and will probably get competing offers (thus increasing what we have to pay the guys to re-up them)

This is probably the most important offseason for our franchise and I hope Rick Smith can target our weaknesses (FS, C, OLB) and turn them into strenghts.

Our LT situation isn't ideal but that is going to take time to fix. You have to do that through the draft and i don't think there will be a LT prospect worthy of our 1st Round pick this year. If Long or Baker are available, you jump all over it but I just don't see anyone falling to us. Maybe we trade down into the 2nd Round and pick up a propsect in the 2nd like Tony Hills of UT(oh wait, what am I thinking. You would have to be a family friend or stick a gun to Kubiak's head for him to draft someone out of Austin)

Tackles like Ogden, Pace, and Thomas all go within the 1st 3 picks. We would have to have had a 2-14ish season to get one of those guys. Those guys all came in and made a difference from Day One. We don't have a shot at anyone like that. i am not even sure Baker or Long are going to be able to. We have to stay the course with Salaam, Black, Spencer, and Winston as our tackles. We just need to coach them up and develop the talent that we have. you can't sign top LTs in Free Agency. We could go after Faneca to improve our guard play but Weary and Pitts are a pretty good G tandem.

Our line was looking a lot better when Matt was showing better pocket presence and getting rid of the ball early. Matt has been waiting till the last minute trying to make a play and early in the season he was letting everything come to him and not being afraid to just throw the ball out of bounds. I just hope he isn't a china doll. He can read a defense and has good touch but if he can't stay in the game, well that sucks. And you can't coach that up.

Roy Williams is soft and a childish cancer. We have other positions to address rather than throwing money at a talented name that will only bite us in the arse and help continue a sideways spiral between what could be and the same old, same old.

I am a UT fan and hated that cat. If we do take him, "Please don't squeeze the Charmin."

I'd take a look at Kevin Jones in the offseason. He's been injury prone though..
