I read a lot on here about the DL's failures. I also read a lot about the DB's failures. I can't help but think that one is causing the other.
Go ahead and read what I have to say I guess but let me know what you think. I really think its the DB's causing the failures. I know people are upset with Kubes for saying Mario is playing well, but then I think about what I see in the games. Mario isn't getting to the QB enough. I realize that. But look at the receivers that catch the ball. They are WIDE open. I don't mean they have a step or two. I mean in many cases they catch the ball, turn and take a few steps before anyone touches them. Its like the opposing QB is just waiting for them to get MORE open than they already are. I've said it before, if you line up 7 yards off the ball as a DB, your DL has almost no shot to make a play.
The other thing I've noticed, is we've upgraded the talent on the DL. I think you have to agree, or at least consider the fact that our DL this year is better than last. We haven't really touched the DB's. I know we've moved personnel around a bit, but we've still got basically the same players. Petey has to line up off the line because he's just not that fast. Our safeties provide less support than a training bra and I think QB's come in and know they don't need time to throw.
Teams could run comeback routes against us all day and there's not much we could do. I just keep replaying passes in my head, especially the two long ones. One was a complete duck and we still didn't have anybody in the picture as he slowed down to wait for the ball. How is a good DL supposed to fix that kind of a coverage issue? Maybe we don't need superstar DB's. I think we have a CB1 and 3 nickelbacks and dimebacks on this team.
