View Full Version : Jimmy Kimmel banned from ESPN/MNF

What Kimmel did during his appearance this week on ESPN's Monday Night Football, according to the show's producer Jay Rothman, was "classless" and "disappointing." Appearing in the third quarter of a moribund game between the Falcons and Giants, Kimmel took multiple swipes at the not-so-smooth departure of Theismann from the broadcast ("I'd also like to welcome Joe Theismann, watching from his living room with steam coming from his ears") and zinged sacred cows Tom Brady ("What impressed me most is that he could impregnate two models"), Kelly Ripa ("Listen if we can have a Mormon President, I can marry Kelly") and sports betting ("Are you allowed to bet legally on this game?"). "It was cheap," Rothman told Richard Sandomir of The New York Times. "The more he went on, the worse he got."

He was the best part. What do they expect bringing him on? They need to stop with the Jimmy Kimmel's and Charles Barkley's. Concentrate on the fricken game. They are turning into the NBA on ABC with the Pussycat dolls playing at every commercial break.

Apparently one mans idea of what is "classless" and "disappointing" is another mans candid remarks ?
I'd seen or heard something about this "ban", but I thought it was a joke.
IMO probably another Kornheiser decision, the guy who single-handedly is in the process of wrecking MNF. What a jerk Kornheiser is !

MNF is supposed to stand for "Monday Night Football". Its not supposed to be
MNC for "Monday Night Comedy". All the crap that Kornheiser comes up with is just a distraction from the game at hand.
I think his schtick belongs elsewhere. Maybe he can spend next summer in the Catskills instead of screwing-up MNF ?
The guests they have on should talk about football. Find another TV format to promo other TV shows.

Glad you feel so strongly about a TV show. Some people enjoy his comedy, some don't. I tuned out MNF when Dennis Miller was on.

It's not like the play by play or the color commentator are saying things that real football fans don't know. Them and their infamous double reverse.

What are you talking about. Charles Barkley (even though he's a rocket hater) and Kenny Smith, make up the best analyst team in all of sports. Those guy's are hilarious and sometimes more entertaining then the game itself. MNF or ESPN could only dream to have analyst that have the chemistry and comedy that Chuck, Kenny, and Ernie have on TNT.

This is the problem with adding "entertainment" to a football broadcast. I don't know about you guys, but I've been grinding my teeth for years when Hank Jr. does the MNF intro. The NBC one is even worse...doesn't matter who does the singing. All that stuff is lame.

Jimmy Kimmel's a comedian. Comedians aren't a "one-size fits all" occupation. If they brought Rich Little out, then I would have changed the channel altogether. Kimmel was just saying what we've been saying for years. Theisman is a pompous douchebag. I can't say that I miss him.

I didn't watch MNF this last week because I figured it would be a boring game. Kimmel's remarks sound humurous but the subsequent ban doesn't surprise me.

NFL commentary is a sad state of affairs but I still much prefer Michaels/Madden to ESPN's MNF crew--though cliche at times they banter well together and use just enough "real" football talk.

I actually agree. These guys are the best studio team in the business. They get sidetracked a little much sometimes but they generally know the game, the teams and the players and they work well together.

I agree. Even though Kimmel's remarks caught me off-guard when I first heard them, it was still funny.

Kornheiser is destroying MNF. I was never a fan of Theisman, but I would've gotten rid of Korny and have Jaws and Joe with the lead fellow.

I can handle Michaels and Madden.

When did Kornheiser start producing MNF while also being one of the host. Yep every decision made on MNF has to go throughTony for approval, everything from lighting to camera placement to guest and all the jokes the guest use go through Tony before hand.

Tony is so freaking horrible its sad. He is not funny and he cares more about the ho of the week than about football....he even admits he doesnt know anything half the time. just horrible.

his jokes are about as bad as his combover. as for Kimmel, he is married to Sarah Silverman, so offending people is practically a way of life for his family.

the MNF is one of the worst in history. I like Tirico but only when he is doing NBA work, he is horrible at football. I like Jaws a lot but Tony is the worst guy ever to work in the booth...and that includes Glanville and Solomon Wilcots.

here's kimmel's response to the whole situation:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/richard_deitsch/10/17/kimmel/index.html

"Technically, couldn't you say Joe Theismann has also been banned from Monday Night Football?" Kimmel told SI.com in a phone interview from Los Angeles. "If he showed up, they probably would not let him in. I was hoping to get banned from a casino first, but I suppose it's satisfying in a way to be banned from any television show. I don't know what I did exactly but apparently it was horrific."
Does Kimmel feel he stepped over the line with his remarks? "Absolutely not," he said. "I'll tell you something: You only get the audio portion for most of the game, but everyone (in the booth) was laughing whether you can hear it or not. If people were not laughing, I would not have continued with it. I don't know exactly what upset them, if it was the Joe Theismann stuff or something else. I didn't feel like I was making anyone uncomfortable when I was there. Apparently, I did. What I sensed was three guys to my right and left smiling and stopping themselves from saying anything."
He continued. "I was on for twice as long as I was expecting to be on," Kimmel said. "There was no set time on how long I was supposed to be in that booth and they could have removed me without me even knowing there was a problem."
Last year he appeared on Monday Night Football and received universal praise, delivering to Theismann what many critics thought was the line of the year on the broadcast ("How's the leg, Joe?"). "I know (Skipper) was high on my appearance last year," said Kimmel. "The fact of the matter is, it's probably not the place for me. They have a way they go about doing things and I don't know what is expected. I always do pretty much the same thing. I don't really change my sense of humor for the venue."

That's what I thought. Korny-heiser is not made for broadcasting. Yes he works well on PTI, but he does not belong on MNF. He's there purely for entertainment value, which is fine with me, but he's not entertaining. At least not on MNF. I didn't think Kimmel was all that bad.

A bit off topic, but last week, NBC went off air on my TV during the game. Whenever I changed it to the HD broadcast of NBC, the screen was black. A really clear shade of black, but still just black.

some of you "don't mind" tonyface mcbrownheiser? that guy is the absolute epitome of anus.

His humor is not for everyone, just like Dennis Miller's humor is not for everyone. I have no issue with him. The both is far better now than it was last year with Theisman, who would say some of the most (No Really) type of things of any broadcaster I have ever heard.

Kimmel would be the right guy in the booth, IMO.

But ABC/ESPN/Taco Bell/Doritos/Jiffy Lube/KFC/Kleenex/ are too scared to let someone like him possibly tarnish their image.

Vinny nailed it: Corporations are playing a "prevent defense"...but a guy like Kimmel would make me stay and watch a 89-10 blowout between the Giants and the Falcons...two teams that are absolutely boring and dull.

Yeah, I am going to stick around and listen to Kornheiser rant on some obtuse experience he had at a golf course where he couldn't get into the premiere parking spots because his press credential was a grade lower than Skip Bayless and some other elitist reporters.

How in the world ABC was able to justify putting Kornheiser in the booth is beyond me. Is THIS the demographic and psychographic of MNF viewers? I had always thought it was the 20-30-year-old crowd for the most part.

Maybe MNF needs to die?

You have Friday night football, Saturday college football, Sunday football, and Sunday night football. By the time Monday rolls around, 90% of the NFL fans are already talking and speculating and analyzing the NEXT game on the schedule. We could care about one last game after seeing dozens of games since Friday night.

They would be smart to have Thursday Night Football instead--Jump right up to the being the FIRST game of the week, not the last.

say it ain't so

don't tell me...your a fan of Gallagher and Yakov Smirnoff too, eh?

he looks like a level 14 elf with low intelligence and the stuff that comes out of his mouth never ceases to amaze me with all his cheap attempts at bringing daytime talk show topics to a primetime football game. Ok, we get it Tony. You want to get in the sack with Eva Longoria. We know that Tom Brady is dating Gisele Bundhen. Yeah, Tom has a sweet life.

Have you even moved out of your parent's basement, Tony? For crying out loud, it's football not evening at the Oscars. Why not just go all the way and get a booth of ryan seacrest, dane cook, and carlos mencia as the token minority. Maybe Mencia can steal some more jokes to use on the show. Maybe dane cook could actually be funny. Stranger things have happened. See that way no one in the booth knows anything about football. With Tirico and Tony both being fish out of water you are left with Jaws. He at least knows and loves the game. Tirico is NBA and Tony is E!.

Now can we please get back to football, Tony....of which he has admitted that he doesn't know a lot about. He is worse than Dennis Miller by a mile...I was a Dennis SNL/HBO fan but not a fan of his work on MNF. He was too cutesy and too full of himself and west coast condescension....but DM was Howard Cosell compared to Catskill Tony.

but to each his own....good luck to the Texans tomorrow, it could be an instant classic. GO MATT GO.

has anyone mentioned how awful the sideline reporters are? well, Michelle Tafoya and Suzy Kolber aren't bad, per se, but they have no purpose. they give horrible meaningless reports. they provide nothing to the game. i like guys like Siragusa, who will provide insight to the game from a different point of view. Lynn Swann did it too, he was great. right now, they only exist to provide injury reports.
