CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme will miss the rest of the season after deciding to undergo surgery on his right elbow.

Coach John Fox said Monday that Delhomme had trouble throwing the ball earlier in the day. Delhomme then made the decision to have surgery next week.

Delhomme sustained what the team called a strained right elbow when he was sacked in Carolina's win over Atlanta on Sept. 23. David Carr replaced him the last two games, when Delhomme was listed as the No. 3 quarterback as he considered whether to have surgery.

Delhomme was off to a good start. He had completed 64 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and one interception.

The move leaves the Panthers in need of another quarterback. Carr suffered a back injury in the Panthers' win over New Orleans Sunday and his status for next week's game at Arizona is uncertain.

Well let's see if David can be the man there now...it's his team.

wow man. that is about the same predicament I find myself in. Just substitute a Carr-addled Smith with an injury-addled Boldin and go ahead and add a Bulger to your problem.

LT is showing some life but he aint hitting the end zone enough. Marvin has been a bust especially when you consider he started the season with a huge TD from Peyton in their 1st possesion of the year. Luckily, I drafted Dallas Carter as my #2 TE in like our 15th Round. He has been a god send.

Andre was blowing up for us early but he should be back soon, and its obvious that Schaub is gonna feed him the ball based on the 1st 2 games.

If you have some decent depth you should be ok. I have had Lynch, Carter, Edgerrin, and Favre all step up for me and if I can get 22 points out of a combination of Crayton for Dallas and Lynch for Buffalo I will be 4-1.

sorry about the temporary thread hijack :)

Schaub > Carr Texans > Panthers

GO TEXANS. KICK THE JAGUARS ARSE!!

The Panthers will have a Top 5 pick if Carr is the QB for the rest of the year.

I agree. The thing that makes my predicament worse in my one league is that 2 weeks ago I had a guy offer me Ronnie Brown and Welker for S. Smith. I said no, that he was too valuable a receiver. I would look like a fantasy genius right now.

The Panthers will be fine. They just need to surround Carr with some more offensive weapons and better pass protection.

Please note: the reason no Texans' fans have responded is that they still haven't gotten off of the floor after reading the title.

i'm going to guess this is the beginning of delhomme's next chapter in his career: backup.
I donno why...he's been a good QB over there. it's not a coincidence that Jake had 8 TD's and 1 pick and 1 sack with Steve Smith as one of the most dangerous players in the game with the Panthers scoring around 24 points per game and Carr playing against awful defenses has multiple sacks, 2TD's and 2 INT's with the Panthers only scoring sparse points (against the worst pass defenses in football) and Smith having to take 5 yard passes to the house if he wants to score.

Don't forget that there receivers can't get open deep either & their running game is awful. Their playcalling could use some work. What's with all the 5 yard dump offs?

Carr is on pace for 40 sacks. I guess Carolina's OL sucks the big one too. At least they got a 1 yard out and the shovel pass on 3rd and 18.

making a parody of that Britney video with Carr as the subject could be instant classic. I'm just short on estrogen and mascara at the moment.

OMG - that carolina thread was hilarious. some people are just stupid. its funny that the biggest Carr supporters don't even live in Carolina. They are probably the same mensas who had a laundry list of excuses the past 5 seasons.

love the reasoning that Carr is gonna be great for the Panthers because he was a #1 overall pick. haven't they heard of Charlie Casserley? he gets all enamored with pinup model QBs with squeaky clean aww shucks Red State appeal and drafts guys like Heath Shuler and David Carr. The fact that he is a Casserley pick should scare teams away like the plague and that is exactly what happened this past offseason. The panthers and their fans will get what they paid for.

A worthless QB who will insure them picking in the Top 10 as long as he is behind center.

I would like to see Carr have every success because he seems like a decent fellow but it just ain't going to happen.

FWIW I think Carr is a very good backp QB. Character, toughness, enough skill not to throw games away, and able to make plays with his feet. The biggest question is in my mind is whether he has the hearts and minds of his teammates.

It's pretty funny when they don't bother changing names

Carr needed a year, his head is not right. He will make plays but he has a thing called bad luck. Dropped passes, interceptions tipped in the air by his WRs and it just happens.

I put Steve Smith on the trade block and someone offered me Donovan McNabb! I took it, of course, and now the deal just has to clear the other owners (I've got Kitna as my starting QB, but he has a bye-week...hope it works out!).

The Panthers have my condolences on their now-ruined season. When a semi-smack-talker from Carolina came over here prior to our game with them, we all took pains to tell him that he needs to hope that Delhomme stays healthy. Unfortunately, they are going to find out the hard way that we weren't kidding.

And on the fantasy front, for God's sake, don't trade Smith for McNabb. Smith's value takes a hit, but not that big of one. McNabb is just plain awful (the one game against Detroit aside).

The interesting thing to watch will be Carr's relationship with Smith. Here, Carr had AJ, who is a soft-spoken, team-first guy, who never really went off, even when Carr struggled getting him (or anyone else) the ball. I don't think he will be afforded the same luxury from the much more fiery Smith. I wouldn't be surprised to see Smith give Carr a TO-style butt-chewin on the sidelines before the season ends.

yup it took less than 48 hours after Carr's first start to have a team meeting.

i thought that was a nice touch.

i give him credit though. he hasn't cost his team a game yet and that is after 2 starts. he hasn't blown anyone away and has looked inept at times but I have seen both starts and he is what he is. a 2nd-3rd string QB that can occasionally come in and manage the game for ya. i did think it was funny that the rookie Moore came in and outgained Carr's production of a quarter and a half with his first completion though. hilarious.

David Carr's worst nightmare has come true.

Unfortunately for Panther fans they are about to have new nightmares. Ones of Mickey Mouse taking the snap, running out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage, slinging side-armed passes into defenders forearms, running backwards or dropping into the fetal position at the slightest bit of pressure.
