Lets see how many offensive tackles in how many years ? Where's that darn list. After you choked on six of them ...I'm fairly convinced that picking up a OT via free agency isn't just a bad idea, it's a disater. Boselli, Weigert,
Young, ....missing two of them...er ... Todd Wade, Victor Rilley, sorry can't think of # 6.

I think there are certain positions where teams just don't let go of franchise type guys, LT is one of those spots. I cannot remember the last time a franchise tackle moved in free agency, what I do know is that they get franchised tag as much if not more than any other position in football.

LT is one place we can't go and be cheap at.

i'm changing my official 1st round vote to a left tackle after today. or a rb. or some olb. or a safety. good lord...

Can we honestly say that there is any position outside MLB, WR1, QB that we couldn't upgrade on??

At least that makes drafting easy, lots of options.

Positions I think we should look at drafting:

Free Safety, Cornerback, Offensive Tackle, Offensive Center, Running Back (or FB), Linebacker

In this draft the depth at corner, linebacker, and center seem to be good. Free safety, offensive tackle, and running back seem to be somewhat slim, depending on the juniors that declare.

Seniors I think we should keep our eye on:

CB: Dwight Lowery, San Jose St., Mike Jenkins, South Florida, DeJuan Tribble, Boston College, Antoine Cason, Arizona, and Jonathan Zenon, LSU.

FS: Bobbie Williams, Bethune Cookman, Quentin Demps, Texas-El Paso, Marcus Griffin, Texas, and Simeon Castille, Alabama.

LB: Ali Highsmith, LSU, Vince Hall, Va Tech, Nick Watkins, Clemson, Xavier Adibi, Va Tech, Keith Rivers, USC, Phillip Wheeler, Ga Tech and Shawn Crable, Michigan.

RB: Jonathan Stewert, Central Florida, Allen Patrick, Oklahoma, Tashard Choice, Ga Tech, Mike Hart, Michigan, and Matt Forte, Tulane.

FB: Jacob Hester, LSU, and Owen Schmitt, WVU. We seem to throw to our FB and count on our FB to make plays with the ball in his hands. These two are the best at that at the FB position this year from what I have seen.

Kevin Smith is a damn beast, his running style reminds me of Peterson. pretty much a lock to be really good in the NFL.

he was really really good against USF for one drive, but then the coaches stopped using him. idiotic.

Free agency? Not every position has to be filled through the draft.

Just want to put this out there. All needs can not be fixed in one offseason. Neither two nor three nor four offseasons. We're not going to ever have superstars at every position. We can only hope to have solid players. That is all...rant over.

because you have much more than one position to fill.

Personally, I think we should continue to put off drafting a left tackle in the first round. It's easy to rationalize why we shouldn't - there are a million excuses. Then, in 2010, we can draft a QB in the first round and ruin him, too.

Our offense has to give our defense a rest. We have to develop the OL into an actual unit with good young players. We have to give our RB's holes to run through. We have to have several long established drives per game and that's only done by consistently good OL play. Schaub must stay healthy and be able to have the option of pass/run.

so...we're not going to have the pro-bowl team exclusively out of houston man. demeco, andre, and schaub are stars for us. winston, weary, pitts, daniels, walter, jones, davis, dunta, williams, okoye, johnson, and weaver are all starters and solid ones at that. so if we're looking to upgrade rt, lg, rg, te, wr2, wr3, wr4, cb1, de, or dt instead of THE GLARING WEAKNESSES (fs, cb2, olb x 2, center, lt, or rb then i think we've all hit a case of the "backwards". i actually think bennett will fill the cb2 hole for us.

The argument was in regards to taking the BPA when we pick, there aren't too many positions where the player we have will cause us to shy away from taking BPA.

The only player on your list of 2nd tier players I have an issue with is Weaver, he is a 3-4 end not a 4-3 end.

Doubtful. Replacing both starting Guards (if you think it is needed), and trying to upgrade your LT doesn't leave you much money to sign a DB.

It can't all be done is one offseason.

doubtfull, they pay some bucks to re-sign him? or doubtfull they address other UFA's? its just a fact something they are gonna have to resolve & allocate funds accordingly. I would assume they bring Weary up to Pitts salary, so then how much left over will there actually be? best case scenero is Spencer can return (Salaam remains as insurance) Weary, Pitts & Winston are settled & the Texans draft a stud Center, Alex Mack http://www.rivals.com/video.asp?section=football&pkey=&vidtype=highlight&vidid=834

I still think we effed up signing Weaver...

I agree with you only because we signed him as a run stopping DE who could occassionally apply pressure and that is what Mario Williams seems to be. Having two run stopping DEs isn't a very good idea when it comes to defending the pass.

Overall I think Weaver plays his role well.

Too bad we didn't sign a screen pass stopping defensive end. Anyone else a little worried about what Reggie could potentially do with some of the many screen passes that he will get when playing us?

Actually to tell you the truth I'm terrified. That's Reggie's bread and butter and that seems to be one of our biggest weaknesses on Defense. I hope I'm wrong but Reggie may have a HUGE game against us.

What pisses me off about that is that:
1. ESPN will say how Reggie rose to the occasion and brought his A game.
2. ESPN will say Reggie > Mario and that we should have taken him instead.
3. Reggie had a chip on his shoulder and showed that he deserved to be the #1 overall pick.
4. Again, they will probably talk bad about Mario even if he has a decent game.
5. They know nothing about our team and will get all their facts and reasoning wrong as usual.

We're already behind in the mind of the national media and will be untill we make the playoffs.

I agree with alot of what you have to say, though it's way to early to know how this will all play out. One thing is for certain, they are going to have to get a Center in FA or the Draft, or both! I also wouldn't be upset if they drafted a LT on the 1st day just in case Spencer can't play there again.

Mack, I think, would be a very good pick, but he's projected by some (WalterFootball.com) to go in the 2nd round. Of course it's too early to tell where a player will be ranked (or taken) in the Draft next year, but Mack, at this point in time, is one of the top Centers in college. JMHO!

Well they NEED a C, OLT. No direspect for salaam and McKinney ment. But I'm not so ridgid that I say the only way we can do this is by under drafting an OLT in the first. Without a second though you better be prety darn sure of the second teir guy(s) you're targeting. We're setting MS on the DC yellow brick road.

I don't believe they can wait any more. You wanna get right down to where this season started to tank....go back to the '06 and '07 drafts and twice we were in a position to take a high end young centers and twice various circumstances prevented it. We've only been in a position to take a high end OLT once in five years. Just me, the odds of hitting a high end OLT only come around once ever five or six years. Move down to get value whatever, better take the guy when you get the chance at him if you like him. Brandon Frye isn't a bad OL. But after the preformance of some of our guys this season, you gotta figure he isn't ready yet. You take the day two guys you're going to have to wait on them. So how long can MS afford to wait ? What I see from my tree is us making the same damn mistake over and over again. Every time you lose your QB prospect, you set the franchise back five years. That's not just me saying this, Mora said it also the other night on NFLN. So how many more years are you guys prepared to wait for a turn around ?

I agree with this beerlover. But they need to start having a plan in place to replace the guards. Both guys will be in their seventh seasons opening day '08...correct. Might be Fry could swing inside. Some say that Spencer would be a natural there. I look at Spencer as a long shot . I put nothing on Spencer's back. If he comes back fine. But you play it like he'll never see the feild again.

But you'd think the way Flanagan has played, if this were true, Frye'd already had a sniff at center. I don't believe that Erick will make the switch to OLT. Some do. But they need to nuke the center position this off season. No doubts, no excuses just get it done. Living with good enough with no inurance is getting us killed this year.
I can not for the life of me believe that they missed this bad on Flanagan.

We spent quite of bit of guaranteed $ for Ahmad Green. Unless his health become a larger issue, coupled with no significant draft picks going for RB last two years, I do not see RB being a first day choice. That being said, would a OLT and center in 1st and 3rd be enough to greatly improve our running game? Or will McKinney come back for one more year of his 2006 sign deal? He looked good when he played.
I think a CB in Free Agency or if Bennett can handle it, this might be the way we see the draft go. That still leaves FS but maybe soeone will be there in 4th round?

Unless a super elite prospect falls to us in the first, you very well may be right. Especially since with the new draft rules, we only have 1 first day pick.

I agree with you on all of this TTP. I can probably live with getting a stud RB in the 1st if they can find a way of picking up a 2nd rounder and addressing the Center or LT position. Then they can get the other with the 3rd rounder. I really believe we can get a pretty good LT in the 3rd round, since I've heard this is a deep draft at OT, so I'm more in favor of getting the Center in the 2nd. There's usually only 1 or 2 (maybe 3) really good Centers in each Draft, and they are usually gone by the start of the 3rd round.

If we can't get a 2nd rounder, then I think we will have to address the Center position in FA or a possible trade. I'm not really in favor of these ideas because teams aren't going to let a good Center go either way. If they do, it should throw up all kinds of "red flags." Just remember, we got Flanagan in FA. Why didn't Green Bay try to keep him if he was so good? I hope the Texans have learned from this, but without a 2nd rounder, I'm afraid they may have no other choice but to go FA or trade. I just don't think they can find a good starting Center they can plug in on opening day after the 2nd round. JMHO!

They did this so the second day would be more important. Now instead of backups and practice squad guys being drafted on day two there will be alot more starters.

There trying to help out day two's TV ratings.
