Ok - I'm confused, which is easily done. On Friday Chad got released, on saturday he ends up on IR.

Did I miss something?

Hmmm....I haven't seen anything mentioning him going on IR. Where did you hear this? I know he was battling an injury during the preseason, but I didn't think it was severe.

lol apparently, it seems like we found a way to extend our practice squad by acouple players. Either that or they really hid how injured some of our players really were.

They could still do it, but I think they want him on the PS incase we lose Schaub or Sage. If they put him on IR they can't get him during the season. I think they are willing to take the risk of him being picked up on waivers to put him on the PS.

I was also was thinking they might do the same thing with Frye (put him on IR to protect him) since he was hurt during TC and didn't get much preseason playing time to make a good evaluation. JMHO!

I just logged into this thread for the purpose of offering this very observation. If they have him under contract, and he is worth something to someone, then perhaps the Texans want to use him as trade bait. His injury did not appear to be all that serious - heck he punted in Thursday's Game!

In a few weeks someone will be desperate for a punter. For the most part, Stanley has done a pretty good job for the Texans. Of course, with some people on this board, if a player ever experiences a temporary downturn in his performance, then that player sucks forever after that. Fortunately, NFL coaches do not generally seem to have this rather short-sited and myopic perspective. So this might just turn out to be a clever move by Rick Smith.

Once a player is on the IR, he's on there for the entire season and cannot be removed.

A player put on IR cannot be returned to the team's roster that put him on the IR, but surely if another team wants to trade for a player on the Texan's IR, they would not be prohibited from doing that. Have you seen the actual rule that applies to this situation? It might be interesting to look at it more closely.

Here's what I think happened. Houston announced their cuts on Friday, but didn't have to submit them until today. Then, they realized that Stanley (as well as Abbate) were elidgable for the IR. That's when they decided that they could put them on the IR and keep them on the roster for next year without running the risk of losing them to the waiver wire. When your on the IR, you are completely done for the season, but can't have them claimed or signed by anyone else.

Have a link(I tried searching for it but came up empty)? I've never read about it, just assumed it was so, because I don't think I've ever seen 1 trade involving an injured player on IR. If you can actually trade for a player on IR, I pose an interesting question for you. If that player was traded for, wouldn't they stay on IR since it's a season ending ordeal? I really don't think that was their plan to trade him, I think they want to give him another chance next year.

I tried searching for it also, and also came up with nothing. I emailed the question: "can a player on a team's injured reserve be traded to another team," to the people at NFL.com.

Is there anyone who posts here often who is an expert on the NFL rules? Maybe they can help.

Seems hard to believe that the player's union hasn't written some rules into the CBA to prevent this kind of thing, particularly in the case of the player being able to play in the same year for the team traded to. That would essentially be limiting player mobility in a general sense. Seems like it would give some leverage to the teams, because they would be able to stash a player on IR and be exempt from the roster limit, and then trade that guy to another team requiring him to play under the terms of the original contract.

I bet league rules or the CBA prevent it.

"When an NFL player is placed on injured reserve, he cannot play for the remainder of the season."

He cannot play for the team that put him on the IR. The important question is: can he be traded after being put on the IR?

Whether he plays this year or not should be of no concern to us. If we trade him, we receive value for the trade. The team that trades for him can work out the details afterwards. I am not at all convinced that a player's IR status would transfer to another team after being traded. That does not make any sense. Each team is surely allowed to assign its own players to the IR, assuming the player is qualified to be on the IR, as they decide for themselves.

I don't see how it can be any clearer than that.

I'm sure you can trade a player that's on IR. But he can't play for the remainder of the season. Period. Why would anyone trade for someone on IR?

The good news for a player who is placed on IR is that he is paid for the season, so that is why there is little complaining, especially from borderline guys

I don't have the time to search the rules, but I do think that a player and a team can reach and injury settlement during the course of the year and he can be cut.

Not clear on the trading.

This was written re. the Redskin's Blaylock. This adds more confusion.:

Blaylock on Injured Reserve
Blaylock went for a second opinion on his heel and could still return to the Redskins under certain circumstances; should both sides agree to an injury settlement, Blaylock could be re-signed six weeks after he is healthy, according to NFL rules.

I think they are talking about resigning with the team that cut the player.

From an article from the washington post last year re Troy Vincent "Troy Vincent is a free agent after the Bills granted the veteran defensive back's wish to be released yesterday.

The team announced in a two-paragraph statement that it terminated Vincent from its injured reserve list.......The 15-year NFL veteran said he's open to offers to play for another team now that he's fully recovered from a left hamstring injury that led Buffalo to place him on injured reserve four weeks ago."
