View Full Version : KEYE in Austin ALREADY messing with Texan fans

DiehardChris

I just checked the schedule for Thursday, and KEYE in Austin is going to televise the Hillbillies to the North game instead of the Texans/Bucs game. This really infuriates me becaues the KEYE website actually says "KEYE 42 is the official home of Houston Texans preseason football." On the EXACT SAME PAGE, the site ALSO says "KEYE 42 is the official home of Dallas Cowboys preseason football."

Hey ***holes - YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS!!! Or should I say - you can't have it THREE ways, because we all know what's going to happen when Austinites start crying about wanting to see VY this season.

It really makes me angry that these jerks actually say they are the 'official' home of Texans preseason football, when they won't even show the freaking game on Thursday night. Instead - we get Hillibillies vs. Vikings??? GRRRRR!!!

Could be worse, you could be stuck in New Mexico and have to pay for the NFL package just so you can see regular season games. Preseason? Man, I'm glad when we play the cowboys, cause it means I get to watch my boys before the season starts.

THIRD BASE THIS THURSDAY!

I just called and scheduled a babysitter for Cage. Me and Mary Jane will be there! Let's make this a large gathering so we can just scream our heads off and make our presence known in Austin. If we get a large gathering, then maybe we can let KEYE know that that's where the Houston Texans fans of Austin hang out and they'll send a noob over to film us like they do for other teams. It's been done!

Nitro, glad to see your showing however you wont see me yet. I cant do thursday night and really dont want to do the last preseason game.
I'll be there no doubt for the Chiefs game, and thats what we are gearing up for as far as I know.
KEYE had the game on but it was the Cowgirls announcers , but the NFL netwrok had another team thank god, becaue those homers never said one good thing about the Texans.

I remember a bunch of y'all writing the station last year with no results from KEYE... Maybe the approach should be going to the front office of the Texans and trying pressure that way. Maybe they are breaking regional rules??? It wouldn't hurt to at least write the Texans FO..

But, just check their schedule and guess whose opener ISN'T going to be televised? OURS! They have Titans @ Jags. http://keyetv.com/programming

What is sad is that the Titans game will most likely not feature VY, yet the official Texans station will not show the Texans game as we whittle down to 53. Incompetence and ignorance is abounding from KEYE's sports programming department.

yeah, VY will probably play one possession and then sit on his keister. Austin was a great city to go to school at but their local stations are horrible.

OT - is KLBJ still around and independent? I had heard that radio station was bought by the evil empire, Clear Channel.

This is nothing new. When I lived in Austin many years ago, the local NBC station (which carried the Oilers) had the Cowboys and Oilers rights for a particular Sunday. The Cowboys were awful while Houston was in the playoff hunt. The station did a telephone poll to decide which game to show which the Oilers won handily.

The station must not have liked the result, because a few weeks later when the situation came up again, they didn't ask, and, no big surprise, they showed the Cowboys.

The moral is, call all you want, the station will do whatever it wants. If you want action, contact the advertisers; they're the ones with the pull.

KEYE is NOT the official station of the Texans no matter what the hell they say. They opted for the Cowboys feed on Saturday and to my surprise/dismay they are showing the Titans vs Jags game on opening day. Normally they have waited for the Texans to stink it up for a few weeks before pulling the plug. Watch their sorry asses start back peddling when the Texans start showing they are clearly better than the Titans. Screw them. I traded in my Texans season tix for NFL Sunday Ticket this year so they can bite me.

Mr. White
08-27-2007, 11:41 AM
We've been through it all. Calling the station...calling the advertisers...e-mailing the Texans. Nothing worked.

Nobody cares because the Texans don't bring ratings in Austin. The only way that they'll get respect in Austin is if they make the playoffs and the Titans totally tank.

We can count on seeing them twice a year on KEYE for sure.

I am about just fed up with this crap, but the cost from switching to DTV would be higher because of what I have, plus the bundle packages I have for internet and phone.

I am in a no win situation.

Can't get NFLN because they want to charge the cable company and they do not want to pay unless they can charge the customer who wants it versus paying for it and giving to everyone for free.

This is such a huge crock.

It'd be nice if the NFL had something like MLB gameday, where you could watch games on the computer. But Texas residents shouldn't have to resort to that or buying a satellite dish.

I sent my profanity laced e-mail to KEYE. Don't expect anything of it but it helped the anger. Somewhat.

Profanity laced tirades or emails will not help the cause. If you send a well thoughtout carefully worded email that has a strong tone to it, your point will come across better.

Which is what I did and I also sent one to the Texans but I do not expect anything from them, because they seriously do not give a crap about Austin or San Antonio either.

However when they see a more professional approach they see a valued insight on something they might be able to improve on. At least thats what they should see. Yes the took the ratings from one Titans game but it was very skewed as in not a very accurate barometer(sp) on ratings. There were so very iffy circumstance about how they got there numbers.

This story made the news last year and they interviewed Vincent and he said the rating were better for the Titan's games this last year and the next year (2007) they will carry at least the first few Texan games and see if it will catch on.

Just got a response... another form letter of course:

Thanks for writing to KEYE; we appreciate you taking the time to contact us.

Needless to say, the controversy over KEYE airing the Texans or the Titans is already running at full throttle. This year, like last year, KEYE officially chooses its game assignments 12 days out from the date of the game. Again like last year, we will make those decisions as we go through the season.

Figuring into each decision is the idea that KEYE should attempt to provide the sports programming that the largest number of people in Austin want to see, and at the same time, we would like to offer programming that supports our in-state sports franchises. Like last year, those two goals are often at odds with each other.

One thing we can be sure of is that our decisions either way will unfortunately disappoint a portion of the sports fans in Austin , and we will never please everyone.

Looking at the number of people who chose to watch the various games we aired last year, a couple of trends become apparent. The most obvious is that the Titans games were viewed (chosen) by Austin football fans in far greater numbers than the Texans games.

The common Texans game last year was chosen for viewing by 33,731 households of the 602,340 households in the metro area. That is 61% less than the number of households watching the common Titans game. In truth, the least-watched game on KEYE all season was when the Texans played the Dolphins on Oct 1st. In that game just 15,000 households tuned in. The second least-watched game of the season was also a Texans game with just 23,000 watching.

On the other hand, the least watched Titans game was a throw away on New Years Eve and was watched by almost 36,000 households. On average, Titans games on KEYE last year were viewed by over 56,000 households, with a high over 72,000.

Clearly, our wish to support Texas sports franchises is out of line with our desire to please the largest number of local sports fans we can. Our response to this will be as it was last year Ė that is, to fairly cover both teams as best as we can. We will make our game choices as we go through the season and will publish our choices in the available programming guides.

Again, thanks for writing to KEYE, please feel free to contact us at any time.

I realize this is an Austin thread, but in checking to see if we're going to see the game here in San Antonio, I see it still says TBA. That's code for Tennessee Broadcasting Association. I've fired off a preemptive email, we'll see what response I get.

I'm looking to see if you guys intend to pull the same stuff you did last year with not showing the Houston Texans. I see the game is still TBA. I hope this isn't a sign that we're going to have to tolerate your lies about not being able to choose the game you show, as you did last year. I contacted CBS last year and was assured the final decision is YOURS to make. So, lets get some honesty going. I'll start. If we see a repeat of the same stuff this year, I assure you we will be putting up an Anti-Kens website, and will persue by all measures within our legal bounds to make your decision a bad one. There are thousands of Texans fans in your viewing area, if you think we're going to sit idly by this year while we're being lied to, well, you couldn't be more wrong. If I'm jumping the gun, my apologies, but my anger hasn't subsided from last years bone headed decisions.

I don't know why y'all are so surprised. KEYE is going to want to make money and the Texans aren't going to make them money in Austin, Texas until they start winning. I don't know much about advertising but I bet advertisers will pay more for VY then they would for Matt Schuab at this point. There is a campus of 50,000 students that worship Vince Young. Austin is a city without a major sports franchise, the Longhorns are their sport franchise. The city, for the most part, is going to follow Longhorns. I've met many adults that will never root for the Texans because they passed up VY. I'd go out on a limb and say that most people in Austin feel that way. I understand why you are mad, I go to school here at UT this year and went to UTSA last year in San Antonio. I knew they weren't going to show games, I knew they weren't going to show games until we did something better than our 30% winning percentage in our franchise's history. I hated that I had to throw down $300 bucks on a slingbox so I could watch the games on my computer from home in a not-to-great resolution setting, but I had to. Texans fans in Austin/San Antonio/etc. are going to be out of the loop until we win, but that's the thing, we are about to win, we are about to be the team with the bandwagon and not the Titans and Cowboys. So just stay strong, we'll get our time. They'll show us by mid-season I bet.

Take heart. This is why we set up with Third Base, who has the NFL Sunday Ticket, to show the Houston Texans games. All we have to do is show up, eat, drink, be merry. Repeat.

Oh, and when the news cameras show, or better yet, when the Austin American-Spaceman sends a beat reporter to get a story --- true Texans fans can tell them what they think of KEYE.

Mr. Vinson, please consider the following points:
1. Vince Young was a shiny new novelty last year.
2. The Texans fans were mired in the midst of a QB revolt, as they/we quickly realized that Carr was not the answer. This was enough to make many people tune out, as they waited for next year.
3. The Texans are turned around this year. New QB. New energy. New excitement among the fan base.
4. We are in Texas, no?
5. You are putting KEYE forth as the "official home of the Texans," no?
6. Two words. Season. Opener.

Please, kindly support your LOCAL team. That team name rhymes with "Texans." Or remove your meaningless claim to being the Texans' home. (Doing so is only destroying your brand equity, as you violate trust among a large fan base.) But, please continue to take your stats and draw flawed conclusions, as the very decisions you make only serve to drive away viewers in droves.

It's so very disappointing. Not only as a fan, but as a fellow marketer. I would thought the story behind the data would have been patently obvious.

Sincerely yours,
Rick

I got the same form letter from vinson. When I replied that I would like to see the book numbers from last year, he wrote that the NFL had already seen them. Whatever.

Screw these people where it hurts, their advertisers. That's what it will take.

Here's a list of advertisers on tonite's news:
Local ads:

If just a couple of fans call these people, email them, fax them, word will get back to keye in a hurry.
I'm also thinking of going to Time Warner and saying, you just lost me and possibly 30,000 others to Direct TV because of keye's decision to not show the LOCAL NFL team.

Thomas,

Thank you for the update regarding not having games aired in Austin. We have a partnership with KEYE-TV to show all of our pre-season games. Iíve placed a call to them and will keep you informed of why the game wasnít on the air.

The Texans are very interested in having our games aired (both TV & Radio) in Austin as well as running promotions and hosting events in the community. Iím trying to get the interest up so they will agree to partner with us.

Hopefully in the coming weeks and months you will see a vast improvement in Texans coverage. I will continue to work towards getting those partnerships established.

How did you get her email address? I am trying to find it or any of the marketing people on the main site but can't find it.

I want to send them email about KEYE not showing the season opener and more events for fans in the Austin area.

I do not want to be a jerk, I gave out that infobecause it really was non-personel. I emailed her and asked her if she minded I put her email on this site, once i get an answer back I will put it up, because I do not think she will have a problem.

Oh I also sent her a link to this thread.

Okay, I understand that, hopefully they look at this link.

I was planning on writing something very constructive. One, it would be nice if the Texans can put some pressure on KEYE or entice them or something to show OUR team. And second, we need a bigger fan base in the Austin area, I am curious to know if the FO plans on having any events or any activities to try and get some new fans.

I really don't see it as being hostile to inform advertisers that their support of keye with advertising dollars and keye's refusal to show Texans games equals the fact that I, as a consumer will make a CHOICE to not spend my hard earned money at location that pays keye to advertise their product.

This is a very simple, straighforward and peaceful approach to a serious problem for Texan fans in Cen-Tex.

The other outlet for this is Time Warner to put pressure on keye, because they(T-W) WILL lose customers to Direct TV over this. That is not a threat but a fact.

And another good point was brought up as to what are the Texans' plans to reach out to fans across the state. I think Mr McNair's $15 off a jersey when you bring in an old cowboys jersey is a fantastic idea to help build the product.

To those of you who don't believe it, YOU can make a change. Look at what people did for standing up for the continuation of the TV show "Friday Night Lights'.
