New look for Texans in '07

Team hopes QB Schaub, RB Green have big impact

By KRISTIE RIEKEN
Associated Press

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans were much better last year but still fell far short of the playoffs.

Now they're banking on a first-time starting quarterback and a 30-year-old running back to solve their longtime offensive woes. Matt Schaub and Ahman Green begin their first season in Houston when the Texans begin camp on July 27.

The pair join a team with a defense led by last year's top pick Mario Williams, whose development will be key in Houston's success after a disappointing rookie season.

They hope Schaub and Green can invigorate the Texans offense after David Carr managed just two touchdown passes in the last 10 games of 2006.

Schaub has already ingratiated himself to Texans' veterans, most notably Pro Bowl receiver Andre Johnson, by spending the spring and summer working out with and getting to know his teammates.

Unfortunately for Schaub, the Texans did nothing in the offseason to reinforce their receiving corps after Johnson.

I think we did the best we could at upgrading WR without giving up picks and I think our GM did good just upgrading the depth on this team and build potential starters through the draft.

Give me a break. We have done everything we need to do we are ready to go 13-3 at least.

I'm surprised we got that much of a write up in the middle of Cowgirls country. Typical, generic article probably taken from espn. I guess Ryans didn't lead the D after all...OK...after actually READING the article, it's a lot better than I thought from the blurb. I hate it when I make snap judgements from only a small sampling of the available information. I wonder if espn is hiring....

Another Texans defender, who unlike Williams, far exceeded expectations as a rookie, was linebacker DeMeco Ryans. The former Alabama standout and second-round draft pick earned defensive rookie of the year honors by leading the league in solo tackles with 126. His 156 total tackles were the most by a rookie in the last 20 years, and he had 3 1/2 sacks.

When you see this...

... it means it's wire copy, that is, basically any newspaper in the country has access to it, and the only decision made by the editor is whether to run it or not. Small town newspapers rely on AP wire copy because they can't afford large staffs. The Chronicle relies on it because their sports department is lazy.

For a frame of reference, that particular article by Kristie (AP sports writer assigned to the Texans) appeared in the B-CS Eagle, the Victoria Advocate http://www.thevictoriaadvocate.com/195/story/93444.html, the New York Times (appeared on Sunday under the headline, "New Blood GIves the Downtrodden Texans a Few Reasons to Hope") and many others.

Sometimes her name appears with the article and sometimes it doesn't. Whenever you see an article about the Texans and the source is AP, it was written by Rieken.

Is she the same person as Megan Manfull? I saw Manfull's Texans season preview in two different national mags. Let's face it - there aren't a lot of journalists covering the Texans.
