View Full Version : McClain speculates that LT Spencer goes on PUP

Anybody else catch John "Hollywood" McClain on SR 610 today from 4:30 - 6:00PM ?
He says he thinks LT Charles Spencer will come out for TC, but end being assigned to PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) and therefor not come back with a chance to be on the roster until the Oct-Nov time period.
McClain also predicted that Mario will step up this year now that he's no longer a rookie and has been assigned to a single position: personally I won't be satisfyed with anything less than double digit sacks in 2007 - that is why we are paying him the Big Bucks.
And McClain says that Schaub gets to work at Reliant Stadium every morning about 5:30 AM or so, even before early bird Kubiak arrives.

I heard it and wouldn't take it as gospel. McClain has been wrong about plenty of things. Spencer sounds like he's very determined to get his job back in training camp.

Well it's definitely NOT what me and many other wanted to hear in regards to Charles Spencer. I really hope McClain is wrong on this. I won't be surprised though if it happens. We don't really know what's going on and I'm not so sure even the coaching staff does. I guess we'll have to just wait and see...

Some posters here have been saying this for a while now. I have not had an expectation of Spencer playing at a competitive level this year, if at all. Most likely not at all.

By the way, are you missing a "not" in here?
Well it's definitely what me and many other wanted to hear in regards to Charles Spencer.

Folks really need to separate when McClain says "I have heard" or "sources say" from "I think" because usually he is pretty good on the first two and on the latter he is speaking out his sphincter. McClain is a source guy, not an acumen guy and usually when he has a source he says so.

Is it true about Schuab? If so, mane he seems really dedicated to take advantage of the starting time he is going to get. I like to hear things like that, how he get there BEFORE the HC does...wow.

I don't think this is a big stretch either way and is a pretty lukewarm prediction (if you would consider it a prediction). If he had wanted to make a bold statement, he would have said either Spencer is going to be out the entire season or back in time for preseason. I think Spencer will have a hard time getting back. But then again, I have heard it both ways. I have heard that he is having a hard time, and I have heard he is recovering well.

In 2 posts in this thread alone, you've made some very grim predictions about Spencers future in the NFL ? Basically and very bluntly, you've said he doesn't have one. And you seem very confidant about it ?

Just his immediate future. I'm more confident of his return the year after next. It is a very serious injury, and he's a big strong man that puts a lot of pressure on it. I'm also pretty sure he's gotten bigger during the off-season, just like after his senior year. That won't help his recovery.

I would not be suprised if he ends up with microfracture surgery. (No I'm not a doctor, yes I have an opinion). NBA players come back from that at partial speed the next year, but it takes them a couple of years to get close to 100%. They put a lot of stress on their legs too, albeit in a different manner.

I'm very pleased the coaching staff is planning to move on without him. They've showed the ability to learn. :)

Unfounded expectations run very high this time of year, and when they aren't met, players are labeled busts and fans want to fire the coaches. More reasonable expectations for individual players may make for happier fans. I'm not saying to be satisfied with slight improvements for the team as a whole, I just think it is silly to fall into traps such as expecting players to be in the Pro Bowl after their second pre-season game against the second strings of other teams (i.e. Spencer last year).

Everything I've heard about Spencer is he's a good guy, he does good things for his family, etc. A real solid citizen. I wish him success.

I would rather be safe than sorry and have Spencer take his time to get back. No since in rushing him back this year when we went after so much depth at the position, I mean the FO prepared as if he wouldn't be back anyway.

Go figure. From today's Chronicle:

Fact, when you weigh as much as Spencer does (and you aren't at your target weight, ahem) then the rehab process goes much more slowly.

Word around Texans-ville is that they are hoping that Spencer makes it back by camp but the PUP list is looking more an more inevitable unless Spencer's rehab accelerates sometime soon.

"So what does that mean for the Texans? It means that Ephraim Salaam better button the hat up tight and get ready to protect the man worth two second round picks."
*****
Runner, looks like you pretty much nailed it for what's very possibly going to happen with Spencer in 2007, right down to observing that he's not kept his
weight under control.
But what I copied/pasted from Zerlein's Blog above is a reminder of what should make us all real nervous. I'm of the thinking that an Oline, any Oline, can be only as good as its LT and lets face it, Salaam is a good team guy and all of that, but he's been on the down-side of his career for awhile now and 2007 will probably be marked by a continued regression in his physical skills and that's bad news for Schaub and the Texans.

Look, If he's on PUP, I'd be thrilled. The issue with him isn't whether he can play 16 games this year, it's whether he is permanently damaged goods or not. Black and Salaam anchoring the left side for 6 games is something I'd be fine with if the likelihood of Spencer coming back healthy was high.

What we don't want to see is the IR- that would indicate serious problems with his knee- PUP means they expect him back and contributing by the middle of the season.

H needs to take care of things - rehab and weight, especially weight - over the next 3 months better than he has the past three months.

Remember all the comments about LenDale White being fat, and how could a pro athlete do that? The shoe is on the other foot now.

Black and Salaam anchoring the left side for 6 games is something I'd be fine with if the likelihood of Spencer coming back healthy was high.

I've been worried for a while that might be anchoring as in "dragging down".

Spencer's weight gain can be attributed to inactivity due to a seriously broken leg, while Lendale's weight gain can be attributed to inactivity due to being a lazy turd.

Definitely has something to do with it, but a part of being a professional athlete is knowing how to rehab if you are injured. There are numerous aerobic excercises that Spencer can do that won't require his full body weight to be on his leg....At this point in the game he should atleast be able to ride a stationary bike....

I can understand a little weight gain initially when he pretty much had to stay completely off of it, but if he's having problems rehabing at this point it's not really a good sign....And then again we don't really know how much weight he's actually gained....

I predicted a long time ago that Spencer would play at some point this year...I'll stick by that...

Watching what you eat doesn't have much of a deleterious effect on the legs either. Given Spencer's history with weight, that should have been priority number one until he was ready to do physical rehab.

I think most of the various spins saying why it is different between a Texan and a player on another team are mostly factious arguments.

I dunno, but if he is put on PUP that does not necessarily eliminate the worst case scenario does it ? They will surely want to give Spencer every opportunity to come back, which might mean PUP but later in the year he still might end up on IR and never see the field this year.

He isnt being lazy, I seriously doubt he has gained more than 15lbs that he cant knock off fairly quickly.

All of the sudden? I've been saying this for a while. He came in seriously overweight - 350+ - after his senior year and he was the only lineman on the team that didn't make weight for the season.* So putting on weight now is just additional weight over what he was when he started last year.

FWIW, I think the thought comes from people who have seen Spencer in the flesh and his recent history.

I seriously doubt he has gained more than 15lbs that he cant knock off fairly quickly.

I'm glad your doubts are serious, but they don't mean he hasn't gained 20. Or 30. Or whatever the actual number is.

*As an aside, that is one of the reasons he looked so strong compared to the other lineman. The other reason is that he is a very strong man.

We'll all know on Spencer for sure in a couple of weeks. Either he laces up the pads and the knee dosen't swell up...or it does. Either the guy has blood flow to the cartlidge and the cartlidge is ok or he dosen't, and it's not. And then they we got Dominic Williams II. The PUP list gives them an oportunity to place an eligable player, Spencer, in lieu of exposing a rookie to the wiaver wire. It gives them an oportunity to keep 54 instead of 53. No one is going to panic at the prospect of starting Epherian the first six. It's the last ten that ought to start panicing folks. They are not going to expose Walker and then pull him back and place him on the PS. They expose Walker...he's *gone*. Same for Brandon Frye...I believe. We've waited ten months . Another of couple of weeks isn't going to kill us. And yes it's that black and white. Either he's coming back or he's done.

Agreed. Every report that we've had is that Spence is not hauging out and is working very hard. I do not know where this is coming from. Just looking at him on the bike he looks ok to me. Just for the record I'd of felt a whole lot better over the deal if the cards took Okoye and we ended up with Levi Brown. I see no downside at having three high end tackles. Someone can always move to gaurd in this scheme.

It would have been interesting to see what would have happened had Brown been available. Everyone has an opinion, but I would have liked to see the choice.

It may very well be that Salaam starts until the injuries add up and Black finishes. However, they could start Black in the beginning of the season to ensure Salaam is available through the year through less wear and tear - I'm not sure how different their on-field performance will be.

That is one reason I think McKinney starts at center - it keeps Flanagan as a viable back-up. If Flanagan starts and then suffers the almost ineveitable injury, McKinney is in with less of a back-up in the wings.

I don't see where you guys get your info that Spencer is so overweight, he's weighing in just like the rest of the guys, he's riding the bike, lifting and is able to put more weight on the leg everyday. Dr Lowell has been keeping tabs on him and is impressed with his recovery. I don't take anything JMc says as any kind of truth, if anyone needs to watch his weight its him,,,I've never seen anyone more determined to get back on the field and silence all of his critics,,,

with the following one from February. If he was running with no pain then, I don't know why it's a big deal he's on a bike and putting "more weight on his leg every day" now.

Spence is kicking butt in his rehab, he's lifting, running(on the ground not the pool btw) and getting stronger everyday. You guys do remember how he got his "Big Nasty" nickname dont ya? The kids a fighter, his only mindset is that he's running out on the field next year with all the other starters,,,he says his knee doesn't hurt and never has,,,he was actually shocked about the article in the chronicle saying he had knee problems,,,,he was glad to be informed of that!:shades: Take the reports and all that how you guys want, there is an optimistic and a pessimistic view on everything, we're just fortunate that Spencer has the optimistic one,,,

You are right,,,I am optimistic,,,so is Charles,,,what I meant by "he weighs in everyday" means he is still responsible for his weight to be where they want it to be considering his rehab,,,he isn't overweight, he keeps his weight right where he is told to have it,,,he gets fined "per pound" just like all the other guys,,,He is still continuing his therapy even though all the trainers are off and not at Reliant, he is in private therapy so he can keep pace with his developement,,,think most other guys may take the time off if granted it but Spence is "Soldering On",,,

I'm not real sure where the overweight thing is coming from unless it hapened in the last month or so. About 6 weeks ago it was in print that he was down to something like 325 and where commenting that it was pretty good because he had been so inactive and still lost some weight. People can put on the tonnage (I know I can), but 25-30 pounds in 6 weeks doesn't seem likely when a guy is working out as hard as I suspect he has been, unless the news got it wrong in the first place.

Since Lance Zierlein is a local sports reporter, I'm going to take a flyer and suggest he got it from talking to people associated with the team. I guess the possibility exists that it was a slow news day so he just made it up, too.

Dang Edo, you leaving your cool, dry Colorado home to come down to the heat & humidy of the Houston summer ? What's that about ? Temporary or permanent ?
But to your post about Spencer. Yea, I remember reading that same sort of thing about the positive vibes re Spencers rehab. But then in a recent picture
that included Spencer (taken during the OTAs I think), he did look real big.

Yup, left it for permanent. Wife told me that when I retired we were going back to Houston and as all good husband since time immemorial, I did what she said.

Spence has always been LARGE, but I really haven't seen anywhere that he has porked up.
