View Full Version : Worst to first: Ranking the NFL off-seasons..

From Fox Sports (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6817568) comes an article ranking all 32 teams offseasons, and who improved the most. In last place is the Titans, which I agree with. Terrible offseason.

The Texans are ranked 20th. I would put us around 10th, but I won't quibble I guess, as he at least mentions we are improved. Of course, he mentions the Oline (like that isn't getting old aready) and also gives us a backhanded compliment (how could they not be better). It seems we will forever be that 2 win team until we shover it down the media's throats, but oh well.

Interestingly, he has the Raiders at #3, and loves their pickup of two olineman no better than Jordon Black, and there line was worse than ours to start with. All in all, not terrible, but again, someone who doesn't really know or understand what is going on down here.....but he will know soon enough, and will be eating crow like the rest of them. :whip:

I have a hard time putting credence in an article that misspells Dunta's name:

couldn't agree more....

going into the offseason Titans had like the 2nd most cap space (behind the very active 49ers), a plethora of draft picks, and the assumed momentum from VY's rookie season.

well Reinfeldt took all that and blew it. They did next to nothing in Free Agency although they had loads of cap space. They resorted to signing DBs from the Colts for crying out loud. Then the Pac-Man fiasco. Then the failure to bring any big name Free Agents. Then they have a draft that has garnered mixed reviews at best while giving VY very little new to work with on the offensive side of the ball

Then they lose Travis Henry and their 2 top WRs (of which they were already woefully lacking). Then you have Lendale White auditioning for the role of Fat Albert. What a horrible offseason.

Oh and lets not forget that they have the 2nd lowest payroll in the NFL. I thought Bud said he was gonna spare no expense to bring a winner to the Smoky Mountains. Well obviously he lied......not surprising.

Not just a little afraid if Young gets a vet WR who run blocks well and has great hands? He is not the answer but he improves the run and pass game.

An interesting theory .....

I love the over exaggeration of our losses from last season. The only person that we lost of any true value was Henry. He had already been suspended for drug violations. He has only had one solid year as a Titan. Considering how many up and down season the guy has had he was defiantly not consistent enough to be a long term answer. Is White? I don't know but he was drafted last season to be that answer so now is his time to prove it. Allot of Henry's success came because of Young’s ability to scramble. With out that the LBs would cheat against the run and Henry would have struggled to get 1000 yards last season IMO.

Sighting the loss of a Pacman as a down turn of the future of our team is ridiculous. He is out one season and may even get that sentence reduced on appeal. Harper was brought in as a #2 CB. Harper as a #2 CB is an upgrade. He would be an upgrade over DeMarcus Faggins.

Fowler at MLB is an improvement over Sirmon

Scott or Griffen will be improvements over Thompson.

If we end up with Keyshawn he is an improvement over Bennett IMO, Jones is our #2 WR so if we kept Wade he would still be sitting at the #3 spot. Gage should be about the same level as Wade.

We went after allot of players in the off season non of them wanted to sign or wanted more money they we were willing to offer. Look at the contracts that were offered to mediocre talent. Clements and Grant were the only players in this off season I was even interested in. Both took huge salaries which I do not think they deserved. In the end I am glad we passed on the second rate talent that was in this seasons FA.

And FA is still not over.

Really the only question is will White be a feature back or just a fat back.

Even if the Titans did get Keyshawn, I wouldn't raise their grade one iota because they're only in the running for him because of pure luck. Nobody really expected Keyshawn to be cut like he did. The fact remains is that the Titans stood pat and anything they get from this point on would be based on luck rather than FO actually doing their jobs and actively pursuing actual FAs, not cut FAs. Especially after the NFL draft.

I'm no GM but that's my thinking on the matter.

So we are lucky because we did not furiously waist money at the beginning of FA? I'll let you in on a little secret .... ever season there are cuts after the draft ..... ever season teams pickup big name players post draft. And your reasoning for us not improving is because we are "lucky"? Lucky or not if we get better players on our team we are improved.

If keyshawn sign, which is a big if, who is going to throw him the ball?

Of course I think that Meshon would fit right in with the Ravens, I mean Raiders, uh Bengals or whatever the name of that team of misfits in Nashville is.

overexaggerating the Titan's losses? that would be impossible to do.

No quality RBs. No quality WRs. Yet you had plenty of money to spend. NEGATIVE.

Downplaying the signifigance of the PacMan suspension is just ludicrous. NEGATIVE.

Before PacMan's suspension, you already lacked a quality #2 DB. Now you need a #1 AND a #2. Harper is barely a #2 much less a #1. NEGATIVE.

Keyshawn is not a Titan. Your WR situation is embarassing. NEGATIVE.

You went after a lot of players and signed none of any real consequence. Thanks for making my point. NEGATIVE.

Drafting Griffin as a CB is the coup de grace for Reinfeldt especially how early they drafted him. Just a retarded move. NEGATIVE.

Yes, the Free Agent contracts were overpriced but you know what, they are only going to be worse next year. Only the Bills have a lower payroll than you. That isn't exactly a badge of honor. What use is cap space if you don't even use it. This proves Bud Adams is a cheapskate and cares little to nothing about winning and competing for championships. Poor VY. NEGATIVE.

The Free Agency period isn't over? Anyone of worth is already signed and your only hope is to pick through the June salary cap casualties. BTW all those guys will want to get paid too and will want to go to teams taht are actuall8y competing for playoffs (of which the Titans will not be) NEGATIVE.

Bottom line is that Titans fan was talking all about how they were young and had so much money to spend and they were gonna improve. Well they didn't improve and to the contrary, regressed to the bottom of the league, talent-wise. I predict a 5-11 season for the Titans.

Enjoy VY for the next couple years because that guy is gonna be gone soon and probably a lot faster than you think.

WR decline later then RB due, due to the stress on the knees and decrees in speed as they age. I never said Green was a bad pickup he is better then the other options you have but is on the decline. I would say the same of Keyshawn but we are not looking for a work horse that a RB needs to be we are just looking for a guy that will demand a double from time to time and open up our younger WRs. Big difference in the roles placed on Key and Green.

I believe this periodical has some helpful info on the information I provided maybe you should pick up a copy?

Keyshawn is not a Titan. Your WR situation is embarassing. NEGATIVE.

I moved some of the sentences around to show you exactly how empty this parrot post is.

RAAAK, Titans have no receivers or running backs RAAK!

But the Texans have a guy in Dayne who has already got the bust tag on him. Green who is a fumble prone RB on the tail end of his career. I mean come on GB did not want him anymore that should speak miles.

At least in White we have raw talent that has a chance to produce something. You say he is not a quality back because he has not played. The same argument could be made for Shammy, but we did not have to waste two picks on him.

You went after a lot of players and signed none of any real consequence. Thanks for making my point. NEGATIVE.

not really seeing your point on this one. They went to other teams for what ever reason. This is not madden where you can just force the guy to play on your team. but you follow that comment up with this gem.

Poor VY. NEGATIVE.

RAAWK! Adam's is cheap, RAAWK! Reinfeldt doesn't know how to GM!

So were we smart in not getting them or not. Your statement contradicts itself. Is it Adams fault or Reinfeldt? First Adams is to cheap to get players then Reinfeldt is not savvy enough negotiate a contract. Can't have it both ways, chose a side.

The Free Agency period isn't over? Anyone of worth is already signed and your only hope is to pick through the June salary cap casualties. BTW all those guys will want to get paid too and will want to go to teams taht are actuall8y competing for playoffs (of which the Titans will not be) NEGATIVE.

Again I bring up Thornton and Mawea. Both good players both signed after the draft last season. Your statement in silly. No good players get cut after the draft but you are lucky and might get a great possession receiver. Again not the first year that good talent has been cut at the deadline, and it will not be the last. Right because a guy cut late is really just going to sit back and say oh some high ranking team wants me but the team I was on did not. Most of the cut at this point come from teams like NE who have over loaded and have too many players and too high a salary.

I also remind you of the records of our two teams last year. We were a game out of the playoffs. The Texans had wrapped up watching the playoffs from the couch by game 10.

Downplaying the signifigance of the PacMan suspension is just ludicrous. NEGATIVE.

Before PacMan's suspension, you already lacked a quality #2 DB. Now you need a #1 AND a #2. Harper is barely a #2 much less a #1. NEGATIVE.

Drafting Griffin as a CB is the coup de grace for Reinfeldt especially how early they drafted him. Just a retarded move. NEGATIVE.

RAAWK! Pacman is the only player on the Titans (if you don't count any of the other players!) RAAAWK!

We have played without pacman before we will play without him again. Finnigan is a stud as your QBs and the Jags QBs found out last season. I notice you dodged the whole comparison to your #2 CB. I guess if you have not argument .... Don't point fingers at our players when the same player in that position on your team is not even as good. It makes your arguments look really weak.

Griffen was drafted to replace Lamont Thompson but will act as a stop gap this year while Pacman is suspended. The only people who seem not to get that concept are Monday morning QBs who can not think of a player as being versatile. A player gets injured for a season in the off season you do not rush to draft his replacement and waste a pick. You assume he will play the following season. I believe this is covered in the book I suggested to Overalls.

Bottom line is that Titans fan was talking all about how they were young and had so much money to spend and they were gonna improve. Well they didn't improve and to the contrary, regressed to the bottom of the league, talent-wise. I predict a 5-11 season for the Titans.

Did Bud Adams use his aging ray again? Man I hate when he does that.....

Regressed? Please explain to me how losing a WR who is a #3 now, a WR who is still a #3, and a RB who has had consistency issues and did not play well until a running QB was added is a huge step back.

This should be good

Enjoy VY for the next couple years because that guy is gonna be gone soon and probably a lot faster than you think.

HUH? Ahh the always lovely poster who makes outlandish statements based on nothing but a prayer they keep deep in there heart. OROY gone soon. I think it is more likely that he will be in it for the long haul based on the facts. When he stomps the Texans again this season in our vacation home will you still be waving the bust flag or will it not match your clown suit?

Just don't be surprised when your season ends with a 4-12 record and everyone pointing to this offseason as a missed opportunity at improvement.

Honestly, the Titans did have a really bad offseason. Their best move was picking up Michael Griffin in the draft. The problem is that they aren't going to use him right if they are serious about putting him at CB. I guess you've got to get a DB to play when your star CB decides to hit the strip club up and make thousands of dollars rain on strippers. He has already lost this season. But that isn't even an improvement in the secondary, that's just replacing a star CB with a good college SAFETY.

Your O-line still allowed 42 sacks last season. That is still really bad.

The average number of sacks for a team is about 35. Last year, our QB was really bad at holding the ball instead of throwing it on time and he was also really bad at curling up in a fetal position whenever there was pressure. In other words, our sack numbers are skewed and make it look like our line is worse than it is.

Our line probably gave up a sack or two more than the average line but that's about it.

IF Schaub is as good at reading defenses, working the pocket, and throwing the ball on time as people have said he is, then our sack numbers should go down pretty dramatically without even making any changes to our line.

We also had problems with rookie running backs not picking up blitzes properly. That should improve this year. We also finished the season with 3 of our 5 starting linemen on IR. If we get those guys back healthy and if some of our young guys step up, we should improve. AND, on top of that, it was the first year in a new system.

Our line should look better next year.

Comments like this are win win for me. Either our team sucks next seasson and all the BS people are spouting is correct or the more likely we stay the same or improve. Even finishing 8-8 makes comments like this silly.

What I want to see is how the Pigeons O-line handles McNabb at 50% speed. How will the team do when there is no threat of scramble? I would expect allot of blitz packages to be sent at McNabb and allot of sacks.
