Texans | Team to move down in draft
Fri, 27 Apr 2007 10:45:45 -0700

Neil Stratton, of Inside the League, has learned that the Houston Texans, as rumored previously, will swap first-round draft picks with the Denver Broncos in this year's NFL Draft Friday, April 27, in exchange for Denver's second-round pick, No. 56 overall. With the Texans' first- and second-round picks, the team is considering four players: Utah FS Eric Weddle, Ohio State WR Anthony Gonzalez, USC WR Dwayne Jarrett and Florida S Reggie Nelson.

Only a first-swap and a second? We get the shaft?

And I don't like the idea of drafting Jarrett.

Why aren't these clubs keeping mum about this trade? By opening up about the trade, they risk losing the player the covet. There's still plenty of time for another club to make a move. This doesn't make any sense.

I agree. And we don't know that this is official but I would like to see something crafty out of Smith. Even if we swap our 4th for their 3rd. All in all, any trade down is beneficial for us and if we get Nelson, thank you 20 other teams.

Awesome news! If we can get Anthony Gonzales in the first in round 1, and Weddle in round 2, I would be escatatic. I am also cool with, although less so, with Nelson in rd 1, and Jarrett in rd 2, but I smell bust with Jarrett.

Each draft is different and value is realitive year to year. If we pull off this trade, then this year at least, Schaub only costs a move from #8 to #21. Talk about a steal. :splits:

Just curious, but how many OSU games did you watch all the way through? I watched a bunch, and I have to totally disagree with your take. I would be thrilled to get Gonzo. He will make an awesome #2 and will be the perfect compliment to AJ. I like Bowe a little better but not a whole lot. But, I have heard that Bowe has turned a lot of teams off with a cocky me first attitude, and that could be turning the Texans off. I think I would take him anyway, but just throwing that out there.

As far as value goes....i'll wait til i see complete numbers just like the Schaub deal til i make a decision on value. It's knee Jerk reactions that trip me out like CrunkTex.

As for with the 21st pick.....Kalil or Staley would be my preference but i'm thinking it's a possibility that the Gmen take Staley. Nelson might go the the Jags so i'm not really sure on that one. DB wouldn't be too bad and i'm not really opposed to Jarrett or Bowe in the first. Gonzales will be a second rounder at least depending on what teams are looking for. But this might allow us to get Merriweather in the second now. :doot:

I'm not in love with this draft after the first 18 or so picks...so if all we got was two second round values (and the 2nd is a late 2nd)...I'm not real hip on this move. We are pretty much assured a NFL starter at 10. It gets kinda funky after 20 imo. I hope we have something more in the kitty.

I'm not sold on Gonzales as a first rounder. He looks more like a slot receiver to me. If we do in fact trade down I'd rather us look to grab Nelson in the first round, and perhaps Meachem or Rice if they fall that far to round two. I wouldn't be unhappy to see Jarrett in a Texans uniform, but I don't think he falls to 21.

I think we can forget Nelson at 21. We are now in that second group of non-sure fire starters at 21. Nelson projects as a starter easy and won't slide that far imo.

If that turns out to be the case then we can look for Meachem or Bowe in the first. Perhaps even a OL pick like Kalil or Staley. We could then grab Weddle in Round 2. Depending on the first round pick we could then look at guys like Steve Smith or Williams (out of Fresno State) in round 3.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! I don't know that Staley will be there at 21 and Kalil might be considered a reach at 21. Although, I've seen Kalil go in the mid-to-high 20s in mocks, and to me, that isn't much of a reach when you consider what Vinny said - we are now out of the surefire starter range. Kalil is a surefire starter, but at a position that hasn't typically been taken that high in the draft.

Oh, and please ..... no Jarrett!

I haven't seen Weddle much so I don't have an opinion on him, but at 21 we have a less of a shot at an impact player as we had at 10. I think we moved back too far, too cheaply if this is all we got. I'm higher on these guys than Vinny is. Maybe the superstars will be gone, but it seems to me picking at #1 didn't get us a superstar once, and the jury is very much out the next time. Picking at #15 certainly didn't get us a decent starter. I just think prejudging the value of a guy can't be done. Jerry Rice wasn't a top 10 pick, and was picked somewhere in the late teens. Seems to me he turned out ok. Terrell Owens was a 3rd pick. Attitude aside, seems to me he was worth it.

Sure, we could use a star player, but we also need a few "good" players. Who here thought Demaco Ryans was a superstar? I know some, like Vinny, were high on him from the start, but I remember on draft day, tons of people on these forums bitching and moaning about the pick. Unlike the last braintrust we had here, I actually trust these guys. Weddle (or whomeever they pick in round 2) can play football. We need more good football players. We are not one guaranteed starter away from a SB appearance. We need to raise the overall talent level on the team, and viewed in that light, this would be an excellent move.

The Broncos have an extra 3rd round pick this year, though. We're getting screwed on draft value points, and why are they doing the deal now? Wait until you're on the clock, FFS. Now, if AP or Okoye, or some other amazing slide happens, we won't be in position to take advantage of it. Dumb things happen on draft day. I don't mind 21, and there are players I wouldn't mind targeting in that range (see above), but there's no reason to play your hand now, on the eve of draft day. And we really need to get another pick to even things out.

EDIT to add -

#10 pick = 1300 pts.

#21 pick = 800 pts.
#56 pick = 340 pts.
#86 pick = 160 pts.

800+340+160=1300 ... the math actually works out well, unless you don't include their 3rd round pick.

Thats what I'm thinking.

I hope this doesn't come across as being ignorant to the facts but it seems to me that some GMs, teams, etc thrive in finding the diamonds in the rough or the talent they need at certain spots. We have discussed Denver and their O-line and how Foster was at #20 and all the other guys below that. I, for some reason, trust them to make this pick work and think they can get two quality guys in Rds 1 and 2 compared to someone at #10, which to me was a tricky pick. I think there is alot of quality guys left who can fit our system at #21.

This could be a move by Denver to pick up Detroit's #2. The rumor is they had offered #1,2,3 this season and #1 next season for the #2 overall pick.

Now if they got #1,3 this season and #1,2 next season they might get it ...

I'll wait and see until the specifics of the trade are released before I say if we got screwed or not .

I think a trade down could help us in the long run because we still need upgrades at the #2 CB , #2 WR , FS , DT , OL , and others . It could allow us to chip away at our liabilities .... of course you have to hit them .

So I say we go

1. Bowe
2. Weddle
3. Wade

I can't believe that they'd actually have the deal in place if Okoye or Peterson were to fall to 10. That would obviously give the pick more value & as such we could ask for more in a trade. Green Bay might be willing to move up to grab Peterson, or perhaps some team is in love with Amobi. Those teams would then be competing with Denver for the pick.

I imagine that this deal is contingent on guys like Peterson being gone, but if someone were to fall the Texans would consider other offers.

Over the next 19 hours more and more rumors will be coming out. as far as making rumors public it is simple, if there is another team that covets a player that say Denver wants they may offer a better deal. I do not want to trade down to the 21 pick because of the players I like, but I know a lot would not be oppossed to drafting Khalil and I think he would still be there.

Here's a rumor about the rumor of us trading. Got this from one of the guys at work.

"POSTED 4:02 p.m. EDT, April 27, 2007
REPORT OF TEXANS-BRONCOS TRADE NOT TRUE
There's a report on a web site that posts football new snippets in small blurbs with even smaller fonts that used to get a lot more traffic than us (but no longer does) stating that the Broncos have consummated a trade with the Texans for a flip-flop of the No. 10 and No. 21 pick in the draft.
But Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the report is false, and that the Broncos and Texans have not had a single serious discussion about swapping picks.
Schefter also says that the Broncos would never do a deal like this before the draft. That makes sense to us, since the purpose of moving up would be to get a specific guy who might or might not be there when the higher pick is used."

Here's the link: http://www.profootballtalk.com/

I can't check it due to filters at work.

That would make sense too. You hardly ever hear of any trades that involve 1st or 2nd round picks made the day or two before a draft. And the only time they do happen is when it revolves around a restricted free agent (Matt Schuab and maybe Michael Turner).

Well, when one looks at our franchises traditional performance at this time of year (draft time) I find it very understandable when people get all Chicken Little about Texans moves. Sure it's a new administration and I'm trying to be as optimistic as I can be but the moment I heard about a deal being done I had a sinking feeling in my stomach. It's just what I expect out of this team. A pooch-screw.

I'll be glad when they post 3-4 solid drafts that are free of glaring boneheaded moves so I can get over this yearly feeling of dread.

Would you call the Schaub deal the Texans getting fleeced? That is what crunk keeps saying over and over. also a knee jerk reaction to any trade before it actually goes down, is more like something a New York fan would do.

Folks--don't get too bent on value right now. Remember how many times the reports changed on the compensation for Schaub? If it is real at all it may change more than once in the reporting.

I agree with you that the value may not be as reported, but actually that scares me. The Schaub trade ended up being more expensive than what was first suspected or reported IIRC...

I don't know if the Schaub deal was a case of the Texans getting fleeced. I know that my initial reaction was that we paid too much for him but I've been a Texans fan since before there were any actual Texans so at this stage I don't really know if I can safely follow my initial reactions anymore.

A knee-jerk reaction to any trade before it actually goes down (in the case of our beloved Houston Texans) is more like a conditioned response based on past events than some kind of regional malady from New York.

I feel your pain Herv, but it's a new day. While keeping in mind that every front office makes mistakes, what in particular can you point to with the Smith/Kubes combo that makes you so aprehensive?

There were some around the league that did, at the time. The thinking was that Schaub's trade value might go down around the draft because the Falcons would be backed into a corner to get value for Matt before he became an UFA in '08. But you know what? If the Texans had waited until the draft to make a move on Schaub, they'd be out of luck. No way the Falcons deal Schaub after Ron Mexico's recent faux pas.

Rick Smith said on the 610 interview that he didn't know "this guy" (meaning Stratton). It sounded like Smith wanted to say "I don't know this guy, but when I find him, he's getting a beatdown." I think the leak must have come from the Bronco side. I know the alleged trade terms favored the Broncos. With only so many blue chippers available, it would seem the team trading up would be paying a premium price.

And Porky, let's not go to the "Have you even seen this guy play?" card. That's weak. Stick with the facts and your observations when debating the prospects.

I'm late to this thread, and to be honest, didn't read all the posts in it. But if I am understanding the rumor correctly, we swapped postitions in the 1st round with Denver, and picked up their 2nd round pick.

If that is true, we got screwed in value.

If we also get their 3rd round pick, Denver is slightly screwed on value.

If we also get their 4th round pick (instead of the 3rd), we get slightly screwed on the value.

Just my two cents worth here.

Well, this administration did take Mario Williams with the 1st pick. That funny feeling in your stomach should probably hang around.

Well, since you're late, I'll repeat what I said earlier. In THIS draft, as weak as it is, EVERYONE wants to trade down, so you'll have to take less on the value chart to get someone to trade up. Throw the value chart out the window.

There's not anything to this rumor anyway. I firmly believe Smith will wait until he's on the clock before he pulls the trigger on anything. I'm just curious what he and Kubes will do if Peterson falls to his spot.

BTW, nice avatar there, Srgt. Saunders

This is the first draft that our new GM and new coach make their own decisions. What they do will indicate our future and the direction of the team. If nothing else, we will get a glimpse of the future here.

KFFL tends to not have to retract to many stories, profootballtalk they are not. I'd put money on kffl being right about this.

kffl is nothing more than a clearinghouse of information reported by others when it comes to this kind of stuff. They have no unique insight or inside information into anything, although their geek squad does a fabulous job scouring various sources for news and posting it on their web pages in timely manner. They are good because they tend to focus their content on legit media sources and not rumor/speculation. I wouldn't consider ITL a legit media source - unless this comes true before midnight since Stratton basically said it was going to happen today.

I visited ITL because I've never heard of it. The first thing I see is the statement "You heard it hear first..." Impressive. And I don't think it was a play on words.

Rick Smith was on with Marc and Rich right after Stratton and Smith basicaly did a "who the hell is Mel Kiper," when asked if he knew Stratton.

It could very well happen tomorrow and ITL can still claim victory with their 'story' but in reality the talk about Denver and Houston making a draft day trade had already begun a few days ago.

The only thing original that kffl adds to the info they summarize into the vignettes on their website are the headlines, which are often misleading themselves. kffl is good since it's a one stop shop for player and team info, but they don't ever break news. They 'report' it as it's being reported elsewhere.

If the trade goes through we still could end up with

1) OT- J. Staley or LB -J. Beason
Be nice if WR- R Meachem were available here.

2) CB- T. Jackson, CB- D. Hughes or S.- E Weddle
All areas of need.

Thats if you believe the 'experts' projections.

Here's hoping RB- L. Booker falls to the third round.:excited:

Would this work?

That would make sense too. You hardly ever hear of any trades that involve 1st or 2nd round picks made the day or two before a draft. And the only time they do happen is when it revolves around a restricted free agent (Matt Schuab and maybe Michael Turner).

Stratton said in the sportsradio 610 report that he thought the deal would happen today. Which made me say huh?

The only scenario I can think of where that might make any sense at all is that there were some reports out of Denver that Shanahan had to have Calvin Johnson, but that Detroit would trade down lower than 10. Even so, I find it hard to believe that Denver could give Houston what it would need to go to 10 and still have enough to go to 2. And this of course assumes the Raiders don't take Johnson at 1.

Rice would be the vertical threat we need.

We do need another WR, but Booker will quiet all the bashing :yap from the media about us passing R. Bush. Green will probably be a one year player for us, and I think Booker will have a better career than R. Bush.

Who knows, maybe one of the young backs from last years roster will step up..idonno:

In that mock, the Texans got Craig Davis in the third round. Tons of WRs in this draft.

Their are too many good players still available for this to be a bad trade. I like it much better than the MS deal. In this one, Houston is moving out of the bazillion-dollar player range, but still getting a great player. In addition, the Texans are getting two chances to score rather than one. If that weren't enough good news, I also like the idea of it not coming down to a Levi vs. Landry vs. Adrianne pick, with Houston being the loser no matter what. Here, the Texans could (potentially) draft Staley, Kalil, Jarrett, Nelson, and still make a great impact. I think of all the players left, though, I am swaying towards Nelson. Oh, well. Less than 24 hours till we find out!

I hope Rick Smith wouldn't make a trade before the draft, the FO took the suspense out of last year's draft and I hated it! (not that we took Mario, but that they "let the cat out of the bag" the night before)

Even though the rumor had been floating around for several days, it may or may not go through depending on who is available at 10.
I am just glad it is finally draft day, after the sorry drafts in the past, and the really good draft last year (hopefully that was not a fluke) this should actually be fun to watch unfold.
I hope they do trade down and get more picks, we still have holes to fill all over the place. I am going to be positive and believe that this staff will not pull a PBuc fiasco, but will actually get us good players that will help us be a winning team.

Go TEXANS ! ! !

Without going into if we should have drafted Mario or not last season and even taking him out of the equation, we had a great draft last season. IF we are able to get Staley or a DB or WR with the 21st pick and then turn around and go the other way with the 56th pick and go either WR or DB we SHOULD be able to end up with a solid first day of the draft.

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

I love these idiots in the media that try to be on top of everything.

Everyone knows you gotta wait till draft day if you don't have the #1 overall. As soon as ATL selected Anderson I knew Okoye would be a Texan. this is sweet. i love when the media reports stuff as true and its not. hahaha
