View Full Version : why go for defense in the 1st?

i have been pimping landry as hard as anyone...until we got schaub. we wont find a starting left tackle after the 1st round...does anybody get that? we've invested so much money and effort into getting a functional offense, we should just take brown and be done with it. we cant make the same mistakes as we did with carr and not build around him and protect him.

the receiver depth is very strong, so we could find someone in the 5th or 6th.

the defense is very deep, maybe not very strong, but it is deep. we should be able to find a starting DB in the 3rd and someone who can battle for a starting job in the 4th.

Winston, Spencer, Salaam, and Black. We have 4 tackles on the roster with NFL starting experience if Spencer can't play. Looks like we resolved LT depth with veterans to me. I'm starting to think we either take an edge rusher or a CB with our first pick.

yea, if you think salaam and black are gonna save the franchise and be awesome starting tackles, you are in for a rude awakening. we need a true left tackle, not 2 backups.

even if spencer is healthy, i think i would take brown and move spencer to RT or RG. our line would be much much better than it has been in the past.

They signed for back up money so I assume they will be 'back ups' and not saviours.

I still think we need to give Matt some help on offense, and I think it would be a good idea to trade down and take a player like OG Blalock, since I feel we are thin at guard with good players. Also a 2nd WR like Jarrett would be ok with me. Or a stud RB like Lynch.

Winston = 1 year of experience and shaky at that. RT by all accounts.
Spencer = 2 games of experience and a potential career ending injury
Salaam = Clearly not starting quality anymore. Did great as a filler, but should not be our starter.
Black = See above. Gave up 10+ sacks last year on a team with great QB play and an amazing run game. I would hate to see what he does with our essentially rookie QB and aging Ahman Green.

Basically, anyone who thinks that Spencer + Winston + Salaam + Black is a great group of Tackles is being way too optimistic.
IF Spencer comes back at all, and IF he is full strength, and IF no one gets injured, I think we'll be fine. But can we afford to risk the health of our new 48 mil QB and a winning season on it?

All that being said, I think levi brown is a mid - low 1st round talent. if there were any other tackles around he would slip. Remember winston justice last year? He was prjoected to be the 2nd tackle taken and a top 10 pick, but bc of character issues he slipped.
Teams aren't willing to invest a lot of money into an "average" tackle. And rookie tackles seem to struggle anyway. D'Brick gave up 10+ sacks last year

To be honest I think its a lose lose situation unless Spencer comes back full strength

I'm thinking we go DB in the first pretty much no matter what...

Our defensive backfield, IMO, is the weakest area of the team at this point...

You won't find a more rag tag group of guys...We have much more quality players on the O-line than in the secondary and it's not even close...

Honestly I'm thinking the Texans sit still and take Leon hall or Reggie Nelson...

If we trade back I look for Reggie Nelson or Chris Houston....

Can ya tell I really want Reggie Nelson ?

Why waste your two first day picks on Tackles last year if these guys are just gonna be replaced by more first day picks this year? Seems kinda stupid if you ask me.

I was actually thinking about that as a possibility to solidify our line...but for different reasons than yours...

I think our Gaurds are fine...

But if we moved down, picked up Blaylock we could move Weary to center...

Spencer, Pitts, Weary, Blaylock, Winston

That'd be a great young group IMO...

Add me to the Reggie Nelson camp. The idea of Nelson playing deep coverage in Battle Red makes me happy. I'd even take Nelson over Landry, simply because I think Nelson can cover better.

Who said they were a waste? Winston is clearly being groomed to be our starting RT.
Spencer may have to have more surgeries. He can't even walk yet.
If you go on to read the post you'll see I said the only reason I would be optimistic is if Spencer came back and was at full strength.
At this point, there is no way we can be certain of that, and so i say we take an insurance policy on the most important weakness on the offensive side

Why sign Black and Salaam if you are going to pick a T with your only one of two first day picks when there are 22 starter positions on this team? That means you will have taken 3 Tackles out of 5 first day picks the last two years.

"kinda" is an understatement...

I believe they are going to atleast give Spencer time to see if he can be our LT before they just replace him after drafting him just a year ago.

Why assume that Spencer is going to come back full strength when there has been no definitive diagnosis yet?
Why assume that he maintains the same footwork, leg strength, etc when he comes back?

He has been off his legs for a year now, and there is still unsureness regarding hsi surgery.
Career Ending came up at first
Then we heard nothing for 6 months
Now we are hearing from him that he'll be good to go (sound familiar?), yet there are sites of him "limping around" with his knee on ice OR
on crutches

I think Spencer could be great. I think he would have been our franchise LT
But until I hear that he's coming back 100%, I am going to make sure we have an alternative.

Think of it like this:
If we assume Spencer is coming back, and he does, GREAT. We have 2 1st day picks to use on areas of need. We can upgrade DBs, DL, WR, etc.

If we assume Spencer is coming back, and he does not, BAD. We have 2 1st day picks used on DBs, DL, WR. Our starting LT becomes someone signed to be a backup.

Which is better? Is it better to replace CC Brown with a new S or have an insurance pick for Spencer

i think people are still overlooking the fact that there are no tackles available later in the draft. are their guys with raw tools that can be groomed to start in a few years? sure, but none are more ready than brown to step in right away.

there are plenty of db's available in the 3rd and 4th that can give us a major upgrade.

LT Brown
LG Pitts
C Weary
RG Spencer
RT Winston

i'm gonna guess that Spencer's injury limits his mobility, so we can move him inside. weary was the top C in his class, let him gel with schaub rather than let an old veteran gel with him then retire in a few years.

CB Dunta
FS Michael Johnson or Roderick Rogers
SS Earl

U Sound like me & my train of thought after the trade only i was thinking WR instead of Tackle. Landry is my guy & i won't be disappointed if we go defense but now that we have schaub & have backed up our LT for days, i'm thinking we need to go WR to give this guy some weapons to throw to. I haven't talked much about WR's in here on the draft but the ONLY guys i'd be interested in are:

D. Bowe (Lol) Meachem & possibly S. Smith & Jarrett. Ginn jr. just seems too fragile to me.

There's alot of ways we can go with this pick if we sit on it. Im in the trade down camp currently BECAUSE there are so many ways we can go with this pick.

# 2 WR

# 2 CB

FS

OL

DL
That's what I think the Texans are targeting in this draft, not necessarily in that order. If we stay at 10, it will all depend on who the team thinks is the best fit. Im hoping we trade down though to get extra picks because when I look at that list of needs I see extra picks that can fill those needs.

Who is going to be our Starting C? We have 3 backups at Center, and we need a starter. Center is the main point of our OL and we have not had a good one in our history. We should trade down and get Kalil or someone in the 3rd. The Center is really where we need some help.

P.S. It is really hard not to use a Center pun when talking about this.

Drob = good #2 CB
DFaggins = decent nickel CB
CC Brown = well below average SS playing FS
Glenn Earl = below average SS.

Our oline is by no means a great group but our secondary is with out a doubt terrible.

Vinny, what do you think of our DT situation? So far Mcnair has done 1 thing for the fans. If I were him my next move is to make sure Mario isn't a bust. I wouldn't mind going DL in the first but DE or DT is the question?

DT because we had quite a few injuries, Travis Johnson is well Travis Johnson, and there is some talent like Okoye, Anderson and Branch. Anthony Maddox showed some promise and Thomas Johnson was decent. I'm not putting all my marbles in the guy we signed. A push up the middle means Mario gets more opportunities.

DE because Mario gets less double teamed and we are kind of thin there too.

I'd rather have Anderson out of all three of the guys you listed. We need an edge rusher and we can't have another season where our best sacker gets 4 sacks the entire year. I've seen games where good DE's get 3-4 sacks in one game.

kubiak has said he's not playing around with waiting for a player to get healthy..like DDW last season.

The main people I think we should look at if we stay at 10 would be...

Levi Brown, Amobi Okoye, Jamaal Anderson, Reggie Nelson, Leon Hall.

I'd be happy if we pick any of them. There is no doubt our secondary is horrible. No doubt our Oline needs help and spencer is no guarantee to ever play again and if he comes back maybe he can be a G..we don't know if Winston will pan out to be the franchise RT we want him to be. DL needs help too, I want to see mario succeed and he will if he has better players next to him and more time to get to the QB.

OL- brown is our only option to start, 3rd rd on wont start for us.
DL- may find a dt later in the draft that could start?
FS/CB- there are some decent guys in the 3rd/4th we could look at if we don't address it in the 1st.
WR- we need a #2 guy, i wouldn't take it at 10 though, we can find a good guy later that will start imo.

Why go for Defense?

Because it wins CHAMPIONSHIPS perhaps. And dont say look at the colts b/c there defense turned it up like hell in the playoffs when bob sanders got back they were a totally different team.

We really need a safety. I mean look at the bears defense when they lost Mike Brown. They were still good but not as much.

Also I think a DT would be great to let DeMeco operate in space more along with drawing some doubles for Mario in more one on one.

The offensive line STILL needs to be addressed. Its not a dominating offensive line by any stretch is why i'd like to see us trade back up into the 2nd and pick up a high ranking guard at the least.

Why are so many quick to marginalize Eric Winston's ability at LT? He played there at The U. But for his college injury, he was a projected 1st rounder expected to play LT at the NFL level. We took a shot at him at 2006/3.02 and what a value pick he has been! I see so many say something along the lines that (paraphrasing, not direct quotes):
o he's a RT if a tackle
o better suited at guard
o yada yada

What I saw from him at RT last year I liked.

So, what we do know is:
1- Winston can play RT at the NFL level.
2- Winston has not played LT at the NFL level.
What we do not know:
1- Winston cannot play LT at the NFL level.

I have not heard Kubiak or Sherman say that Winston cannot play LT. Heck, our line was so injured and running on fumes last year we hardly had the luxury of experimenting with Winston at LT. Yet I marvel at how everyone immediately takes it as GIVEN that he cannot/will not, and that LT remains the single biggest hole in the Houston Texans. I guess the more something is said, the more it is believed.

If Spencer does not recover or is slow to do so, why not give Winston a shot at the position in which he excelled at a nationally ranked (if not respected) college program.

I'm just saying, maybe the collective needs to expand their idea of what is possible.

All the best,
Rick

The texans will not be taking levi brown. There's a good possibility that spencer will be back and just in case he isn't the texans went out and resighned salaam and got black in free agency.
With so few picks the texans don't have the luxery of just picking the best player. they are going to have to decide what their biggiest needs our and get that in the first round.
Look for
1. Trade down
2. one of these three positions will be picked with the first round pick. D-line, WR, secondary.
The perfect situation is to trade back to 16 or lower pick up a second round pick and than go for one of the 3 positions mentioned above. From 12-24 their is a bunch of guys with equaly rating such as Revis,Houston,Ross, Amobi okoye, alan branch, Jarvis moss, Robert Meachem, bowe, ginn, Sidney Rice, Reggie nelson

Anderson, Adams, Jarvis Moss (probably more of a 3-4 tweener guy) Ray McDonald and Charles Johnson are guys I wouldn't mind having. I'd probably only take Anderson and Adams at 10 though (both probably gone). If we trade down I'd look at the other guys I listed....but if Anderson and Adams are gone it's very likely the top CB will still be on the board. It's tough to find good starting CB's after the first and second rounds and this isn't a very good year for CBs

At CB, would you take Chris Houston or Leon Hall? I would think Houston is the better of the two as he played in the SEC, ran faster, and didnt get exposed by fast receivers. Should be interesting, but I would be happy with Houston or Nelson.

Why sign Black and Salaam if you are going to pick a T with your only one of two first day picks when there are 22 starter positions on this team? That means you will have taken 3 Tackles out of 5 first day picks the last two years.

Why draft Adrian Peterson if you've just signed Ahman Green and Ron Dayne? I hope the Texans wouldn't follow the same logic if Peterson happened to fall.

For that matter, why take a LDE #1 overall when you've just signed a LDE in free agency with an 8 figure signing bonus? The Texans have proven to be unpredictable regarding the draft. Spencer or Winston moving inside wouldn't be that much of a reach. Some predicted that Winston might be best served playing guard. Add to that, the uncertainty of Spencer's return, the long term investment in Matt Schaub, and that Levi Brown is a value pick at a premium position...I wouldn't be so dismissive regarding the Texans taking Brown in the 1st.

Our O-Line is not as bad as some think. Dominick performed decently with it untill he got hurt. Carr did get sacked alot but whose fault was that? With a veteran RB in Green and now a quality QB that they don't mind blocking for, the OLine will them most improved part of this team.

Now focus on defense......two major weaknesses we had last year were that we could not produce turnovers or get to the QB. Take Landry or Hall and we address both of those needs. I really wish that we could have gotten something for Carr....we didn't so maybe we should trade down again and pickup another pick in 2nd or 3rd?

You know, people like to dissect Black's stats and attribute sacks to him and whatnot, but personally I don't care about that right now. He played in all 16 games for the Chiefs and started 15 of them at tackle. The Chiefs had a decent offense with him in there, so he should be more than serviceable for us in a rotaion or as a backup, at least in the short term.

Sure, that's a pretty simplistic view, but man it sure beats over analysis for me...

Personally, I'm, going to relish them letting Levi Brown slide on by. If Spencer is not ready, Schaub gets to taste a bit of what DC faced the last five years and the new savior of the francise ends up the '07 season holding a clip board. And then in the next off season we can speculate whether or not Scaub's knee, shoulder, whatever will be ready by the '08 summer camp.

The problem with Erick Winston, and if this is their mind think, sliding him out to left tackle...it's not his foot speed. It's his arms. His feet are elite. His arms are not. He didn't look to me at the end of last season that he was ready for ORT. He's has his nose bloodied for sure, but there was a lot of rust on the guy. His run blocking was outstanding on most plays. On some running plays he missed angles and was out of position. Not damning the guy. He's working hard. He's a great tallent....But...Now you're going to project him to make a leap in ablity that he hasn't seen in three years to move into OLT...that's a prety fair reach. The key to OLT in '07 is how long can Salaam's legs hold out untill Spencer comes back. That's it. If Jordan Black is in there, the next crys will be to move Pitts out there. And as soon as they sitck Pitts or Flannagan out there, that'll be the end of the '07 season.

Levi Brown would be second round talent in next years draft, he would be way to far of a reach. Our offense has a lot enough players to be productive, its just about chemistry and timing now. Our defense still needs a new frame work inorder to be dominant, or at least decent i should say. Our interior d line needs much help and as does our secondary, especially free safety.

Winston, Spencer, Salaam, and Black. We have 4 tackles on the roster with NFL starting experience if Spencer can't play. Looks like we resolved LT depth with veterans to me. I'm starting to think we either take an edge rusher or a CB with our first pick.

No Vinny what you have listed there is one prospect at RT who showed promise in '07. And who also couldn't win the job outright from Weigert untill Weigert got hurt. You've got one LT prospect who started two gameS and from any information I can get to... is hurt . Best case he comes back durring camp and is ready by the second week. Worst case...he's not ready, Salaam goes down and Jordan Black is your starter untill Spencer comes back. Matt takes a beating. Or Spencer is not ready they IR him in camp and you don't see him untill October. Salamm goes down, Matt takes a beating. And OBTW...Spencer's question mark is basically the same question mark as Dominic Willaims had last off season. Cartedge. Far from a done deal.

On paper you have four tackles. In reality, you're one injury away from the new guy taking a severe beating. Hope he as least as durible a DC ? Going to be a hoot to see how the Texans handle it with the new super bowl QB on draft day.

You're going to get it one of these seasons. The only question is if the new guy gets beaten to a bloody pulp this season...will that be enough for you ? Will you finally be ready to say calf rope ?

Going by last years sack stats, all we need to do is give up one less sack every two games, and we're in the top half of the leauge. I think getting rid of Carr reduces our sacks by that amount by itself.

i agree with vinny on this one. texans did enough to put up a respectable line. adding brown would only cluster things up more. if the texans took brown i wouldn't be mad, because i still think the oline needs help, but not as much as last year. i do, however, think the seconadary needs the most help whether it be cb or s. the texans were 22nd in passing yards allowed (hell they lost the buffalo game alone due to the secondary) 30th in ints, and 26th in pass deflections. if the texans can get reggie nelson to bang heads and make the offense fear the middle of the field i'm all for it. that'll also cut down the big play abilities of the offense alot to.

why go defense in the 1st...because we have more holes on the defense right now than we do on the offense...that's why

we need a FS, CB, DE, DT, and young LB to develop

that's every position on the defense that we could draft...granted the LB can be a late round pick

but i don't think anyone could argue that getting landry or nelson wouldn't drastically help this defense

getting a corner like chris houston, leon hall, or darrelle revis would help out d-rob a ton...however i like the depth at corner this year better than safties

a guy like gaines adams or jamaal anderson would take some of the double teams away from mario and we could move weaver inside

getting branch or okoye and playing him next to mario would also help keep the o-lines honest

and just for laughs would anyone be hurt if we got patrick willis...i wouldn't...imagine willis and ryans playing side by side for the next 7-10 years...scary

now is that what's going to happen...who knows...i personally think we're trading down...probably with green bay so they can leap frog buffalo for marshawn lynch...with the 16th pick i think we'll simply take the guy highest on the draft board...whether that's offense or defense...whether that's a receiver or a DB...i don't think kubiak is going into the draft going i want this position in round 1

I think Ahman Green's ability to pick up the blitz will be another big factor. Still, unless Spencer can return with 100% effectiveness, the Texans need another LT.

Will you finally be ready to say calf rope ?
I'm ready, let's do it. Chaff grope...er, half dope...er, laugh nope...

I can't do it. :(
