Why are you guys so excited about this trade? I'm a Falcons fan and I went to UVA with Matt Schaub, and I can honestly say...You guys are getting a good QB who is capable of doing great things(i.e. the New England game a couple yrs back...which we would have won if Rossum hadn't committed that 40yd pass interference to set NE up for game winning field goal) but David Carr is a great QB. Texans problem is oline...just like Falcons. Mike Vick is a GREAT QB(watch games!!) his receiving corp and line sucks. He runs for 1000yds bc, like David Carr, he has no choice. Either run or die!! Both our lines are like turnstyles! Schaub is gonna get lit up just like Carr did

Everybody outside of Texan fans believe Carr is a great QB, because the national media portrays this.........Poor Carr, he has no Oline or weapons around him.

Carr is just bad, he never developed and ended up regressing. He may be good someday, but it won't be here. He will never succeed in a Texan uni.

Our Oline is not the greatest, but it is also not the worst either........the Oline gets a bad rap. Even a bad Oline doesn't explain -5 passing yards Carr had against Oakland last year..........-5 passing yards. The guy is broke, his confidence is in shambles and he may never recover.

Unless it's already setup. I'm thinking with what we gave for Schaub and Rick's earlier comments about not giving up picks - I get the feeling something's already in place, whether with another team via Carr or the future plans on how to acquire more picks. If this was the previous C&C circus, I wouldn't feel the same way.

are you serious...

Trading for Schaub showed all the cards that were on the table. Everybody in this league knows Carr isn't the starter and we are looking to move him.

There is nothing Smith can say thats going to hurt what little value Carr has, Smith is actually trying to create value, which is going to be hard cause teams know they can just wait for his release.

They did not break the bank, it is a very cap friendly deal. And you do not know what they will get for Carr and neither do I. McClain and all the other goof balls don't know jack about that either. there are no other QBs out there available, so if a team wants to go with vet and not draft someone in the first round it might start a bidding war.

i would also hope that this FO didn't look at the acquiring of schaub and trading carr as 2 seperate events. Thats when we would get nothing for carr like many here are mentioning.

I believe a deal was pretty darn close to being in place..all set up contingent that we signed schaub. now that our part is done w/ atlant it'll take a few more hours finishing up the touches on the carr trade....not starting it.

If you deal with carr and schaub as two unrelated trades...we're shooting ourselves in the foot. hopefully we didn't do that...and i trust that smith is smart enough not too...other wise carr wouldn't be traded till like 1 week or so.

You don't want to have one news item stepping over the other. If the deal is as close as it sounded, you let Schaub have his day and make the media tour and then announce the Carr trade tomorrow (since it is Friday, you would not want to announce on the weekend).

I think that Carr will be going to Oakland since they just traded another one of thier quaterbacks. Now Oakland will draft CJ and since the Falcons were not going to be able to get him because the Raiders were already planning to get Carr and draft CJ. Atlanta does not have to worry about Tampa getting CJ. What ever draft pick we get from Oakland they will get back from GreenBay when they trade Moss.

I've been walkin' these streets so long
Singin' the same old song
I know every crack in these dirty sidewalks of Broadway
Where hustle's the name of the game
And nice guys get washed away like the snow and the rain
There's been a load of compromisin'

But I'm gonna be where the lights are shinin' on me

Like a rhinestone cowboy
Riding out on a horse in a star-spangled rodeo
Like a rhinestone cowboy
Getting cards and letters from people I don't even know
And offers comin' over the phone

Well, I really don't mind the rain
And a smile can hide all the pain
But you're down when you're ridin' the train that's takin' the long way
And I dream of the things I'll do
With a subway token and a dollar tucked inside my shoe
There'll be a load of compromisin'
On the road to my horizon
But I'm gonna be where the lights are shinin' on me

Like a rhinestone cowboy

C'mon...this is all semantics. All of these guys just stand in front of a ton of people in the media just trying not to say anything stupid. Carr wasn't perceived as a leader of the team, but it wasn't because he failed to commit to that responsibility in a press conference.

Everybody wins.......Except for Tampa....they should not have accepted the Plummer trade!

Thats right...EVERYONE knows....You mess with the bull, You get ___ _____!:yahoo:

C'mon...this is all semantics. All of these guys just stand in front of a ton of people in the media just trying not to say anything stupid. Carr wasn't perceived as a leader of the team, but it wasn't because he failed to commit to that responsibility in a press conference.

If this guy can move the offense up and down the field, he will be considered a leader.

What you say makes more sense, but they put animated smiles in their posts and you didn't, so I'm gonna have to go with them...

so don't expect much in return for carr.

I'm expecting zippo, so anything we get will be a pleasant surprise.
But Schauby, as the ATL guy called him on SR 610 yesterday, is personable
and poised in demeanor. Lets hope he's that cool when its 3rd & long in the RCA Dome and Freeney is staring down his sights at him from the edge.

I had visions of Oswald-Ruby as the presser began.

My thoughts on the presser:

1. Big-time "We screwed up" admission by McNair. That's hard to do when you're a multi-quadrazillionaire. The thing I like is that McNair was trying to do the right thing, trying to give a guy a shot--one more try--before axing him. Can't fault a guy for having that kind of loyalty to a player who really is a classy person on and off the field. All of us wish we can work in a situation like that, in a place where the top boss believes in you. So that was hard to watch, hard to see our owner admit a pretty big "mistake."

2. That's gotta' sting David, as well. You've just been called "a big mistake," and even though everyone was classy about their responses during the presser...you still feel bad for DC a little bit.

3. A deal for Carr is done, IMO. We haven't released those details because you want both teams to have their own day in the sun, so to speak. Does no good to have this big presser for Matt and then at the bottom of the screen you see the scrolling ticker that says "BREAKING NEWS: David Carr traded to _______...." David will have his day tomorrow since it's Friday. He'll get to strap on a new baseball cap, too, and it should be interesting to see the responses he gives when he's asked about leaving Houston, and about the "conditions" he worked under in Houston.

4. Matt is articulate, but a little bland. The question about "What intangibles, other than your passing abilities, can you outline for us?" was answered with basically a non-answer: "I think the QB is the leader, and he is in front on the field, off the field, in the community....so I look forward and I am excited about that." Not exactly an informative answer. Never said WHAT he does, what his mentality is on the subject of intangibles that he was asked about. Kinda' a weird answer, to tell you the truth. I thought he sounded "good," but not so sure that he said anything of real value that we can pick up on. And you know, maybe that's OK. I think David had a tendency to try and get "too deep" and to try and find the right answer. Seems that Matt might be comfortable just being a QB and not really striving hard to give the media insightful answers...cuz at the end of the day, it's the play on the field that matters most. And you can tell he KNOWS that. He said so.

Overall, it was a good presser. Nothing really earth shattering. Just a good "Welcome to Houston."

Ahman knew we were going Matt Schaub a long time ago. I'm sure Kubiak told him so when the pitch was made to Ahman, and I am sure that Ahman personally met with Matt to let him know that the blitz is going to be picked up come hell or high water...that stuff goes a long way to making sure you seal the deal with a guy who's going to be the new tackling dummy in Houston. Kubiak utilized Plummer to talk to Matt. Utilized Ahman to talk to Matt. Had a round of golf with him. Had three former Atlanta coaches discuss Matt on an evaluatory level. Sounds as if the FO has done its homework...yet this is being described as a gamble. I think it's the best gamble we've made yet.

Everything is a gamble, by the way.

So if that was the case how come DC never said it. DC was not the leader for the simple fact that........ he wasn't. No one perceived him as one therefore he never acted like one.

I am not a DC hater so don't take this like that. I wish him well as long as he does not play us.

The comments made were something I nor the team was accustomed to.

Bob "Freakin" Allen could not resist. He hates Carr.

Did you take note who he asked that question to?

Bob "Freakin" McNair . . . that's who. Bob Allen may be a chump, but he knows who really pulled the trigger on that mistake. And McNair's reply was lame IMO. Shoulda manned up and admitted it publicly.

First off, gpshafer has been remarkably sharp with his posts as we've all been discussing the Schaub acquisition, IMO. OK, on to the substance:

Journalism is a dead art. How do you ask the QB to define "intangibles"? That's a question for the GM or coaches or scouts or "expert analysts". Did the guy expect Schaub to compose an essay on the spot? Did he expect Schaub to take the time to say intangibles are knowing the plays, knowing each player's role in each play, being able to read the defense from the point of view of each guy on offense and make sure each knows what adjustments he needs to make, having a feel for all that occurs all around him as the play develops so that he can adjust on the fly, praise his guys for good play and coach them or chew their a** for bad play, knowing which will be most effective in spurring that player to correct? Just for starters?

Look for a Carr trade today or tomorrow per Rick Smith

I like how Rick took the question head up and didn't try to side step the issue. Next, a deal or offer much rather must be in play because I don't think he would have made the statement that David would be traded by today or tomorrow much rather. That is too much of a commitment to say IMO. Saying we will try to get a deal soon or explore all options before coming to a decision is the lanaguage I was expecting which would have told me that teams were taking the wait and see approach.

huh? McNair came clean today. What are you talking about?

I listened to it on the radio, and I don't think he came as clean as you think he did. Thought it was downright evasive. Maybe it's the enormity of the mistake, or maybe it's the constant debate that's been going as to WHO exactly it was who gave the final OK on the thing. And IMO, I think he should have owned up to it way before now.

I think it's more of a situation of YOU not wanting to lose one of your soap box items.

He manned up, admitted in casual terms that it was a mistake, and then moved on.

Would you have him put into the stocks down on the city square so we can throw rotten lettuce and tomatoes at him?

I mean, let go of it. I think you're reaching a little on this one. I saw a guy sitting next to Matt Schaub, and that's as much of an admittance of making a mistake that I need. In addition, he did say that he's made mistakes and that he tries not to make as many bad ones as he makes good ones.

Sheesh, what more do you want? His head on a platter?

Maybe it's because I just listened to it on 610, instead of watching it on TV, and not being able to look at McNair's face as he was responding. Maybe I just read to many editorial columns and message board posts blaming Kubiak and everyone else but the owner for the 'mistake'.

But you're right. Have to let it go.

I missed the press conference. I was running errands. At around the time of the press conference, I heard this Kelly Clarkson song on the musak.

Breakaway

Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window
Dreaming of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray (I would pray)

Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I prayed I could break away

[Chorus:]
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love
I'll take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway

Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get onboard a fast train
Travel on a jet plane, far away (I will)
And breakaway

[Chorus]

Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging around revolving doors
Maybe I don't know where they'll take me but
Gotta keep moving on, moving on
Fly away, breakaway

I'll spread my wings
And I'll learn how to fly
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway, breakaway, breakaway

Maybe it is a sign.

Maybe the song is really about quarterback change.

Or maybe it is just a reflection that contemporary music really is terrible.
