I was wondering if anyone knew the origin of these names? Are they becuase Sam(Strongside), Mike(Middle), and Will(Weakside) are just random names that start with the proposed letter or is there another reason?

If these names had originated from the military, they'd be called the Sierra, Mike and Whiskey linebackers...

I don't think the NFL needs any more mentioning of alcohol because they get enough of players with DUIs.

when teams play 3 -4 do the middle linebacker names change? I'm sure I read something somewhere.

Well a 3-4 has 4 linebackers. I would imagine there is another name at least. I suppose you could have 2 Mikes, a Sam and a Will, but i have a feeling it doesnt work like that. Not sure. Anyone know?

In highschool my freshmen year our linebackers were actually named sam and will...so it was really easy to remember. Except when the coaches wanted to switch Sam to Will and vice versa.

generally the two inside backers in a 3-4 are called the mac and the buc(k) (seen it spelled both ways)

Which is which? Does the Mac stand next to the Will or the Sam or does it not matter as much?

For easy reference, Sharper was the mac and Foreman was the buc and I believe Foreman tended to line up on the strong side.

So the arrangement was Sam Buc Mac Will.
