View Full Version : Levi Brown talk? Seriously?

Look - let's think back a little - the Levi Brown talk ONLY started because the Texans are on the fringe of the top 7 or the 'BIG 7!' ONLY THEN...did people look at who was drafting where.

"Well, it's the Texans - of course they need line help. Who's the next LT in the draft? Levi Brown? Yeah! Let's put him in at #8."

- - a creation was born - -

Now, everyone thinks that Levi Brown is a top 10 pick. He is NOT a top 10 pick and he ain't going in the top 12-15. He's simply not that great of a prospect. Granted, he's a solid, solid lineman but really no more so than someone in the 3rd round. You simply can't waste a 'play-maker' pick on a guy who is ABSOLUTELY a reach at 8. He's actually a reach at 12. I'm talking a reach!

He's solid but come on guys - if you don't get a play-maker, trade down and get picks. Laron Landry is THE BEST FS in this draft bar none. Oh yeah - We don't have a FS on the roster - period. He runs a 4.3 and that takes a backseat to his 'football instincts' and playmaking ability and confidence.

I like Landry, yes, but if AD or JT or CJ were there, I'd grab them!!

But here's what hurts us as a team and this is UNDENIABLE - if the other team runs a seam (Lee Evans, Reggie Wayne, Stallworth, etc...) we are FLAT OUT DEAD! CC can't cover back there. His 4.6 - 4.7 speed is destroyed time and time again as is Glenn Earl's. PLus, they're not FS, they're SS. They play the run decent but against the pass, their instincts are NON-existent.

I think Earl could be fine at SS but we REALLY need a stud 'Troy P' type of play-maker in that secondary. Grab Chris Houston in the 2nd rd and we've got something brewin'!!

Look, I want the sexy pick as well but then I break it down.

AP - LOVE HIM, WANT HIM, but can get by with Green, Dayne, and Chris Taylor.

Quinn - LIKE HIM but also like Kolb and Beck about the same in later rounds.

Joe T - Now you're talking.
CJ - Now you're talking.

Would I move up to get one of those 2 guys? Yep! (Depending, of course)

If not, I take my version of Troy P. and I use him the exact same way Pitt does. Blitz, fake the blitz, cover, play LB, play CB, HIT, YELL, SCREAM, etc...

Seriously, I thought all the Levi Brown talk started around the Senior Bowl.

But... don't you think it's kinda funny that our "biggest need" is free Safety and who happens to be the eight best player in this draft??

I know there are a few astute fans who mentioned a weakness at FS before the '06 season. But our coach said he was pleased with what we had at Safety, and I have not seen one thing to suggest he might feel otherwise.

Hey, I'm fine drafting Laron Landry, as the BPA at #8, but I don't by FS being anymore of a need than RB.

QB, CB, DT, WR. Our biggest needs, top to bottom.

I say we take the best available player in this order. And these are the only players that have a realistic chance to being available.

1. Adrain Peterson
2. Brady Quinn
3. Laron Landry
4. Gaines Adams or jammal anderson
5. Levi Brown

QB, CB, DT, WR. Our biggest needs, top to bottom.

I'm convinced Joe Staley or Doug Free would better suit the Texans' needs at tackle than Levi, and they could be had for less than Levi would cost. However, I think the Texans needs are still: OT, C, DT, CB, and S (not necessarily in that order).

I say we take the best available player in this order. And these are the only players that have a realistic chance to being available.

I say take Levi and Quinn of the list, but otherwise, I like what you've got and the order you've got. As long as we are getting any combination of Adrian Peterson/Jamal Anderson/Gaines Adams/Alan Branch/Laron Landry, then I'll be very happy.

I think I read into today's paper that the coaches want to start TJ and Maddox at DT? I really can't see any way at all that this staff, including the owner, could 'sell' Branch to this city. This city knows we need someone - we don't just need a Jamal Anderson or Alan Branch - we need a 'franchise' RB, or a 'franchise' WR, or a 'franchise' LT, WR, FS. I really think that's what we 'need' to hear.

If this team comes away with a Joe Thomas, Laron Landry, Calvin Johnson, or Adrian Peterson, then I think we'll all 'feel' like we were successful in our first round. i also think if we traded down to mid-to-low first round and came away with a 'Lynch and Houston', 'Levi and Carricker', etc..( Examples only - reeeelax) then I think we could be sold on that as well.

Other teams are looking for additions - we're looking for cornerstones, IMHO.

And yes, Houston will probably be gone by late first. If so, I grab Kolb with our 2nd or Troy Smith with our 3rd for our QB to develop.

Kolb with a second would be retarded. Grab O-Line help in the second...Staley, Ugoh, Kalil...get a stud DT/DE if the O-Line guys are gone.

After Quinn and Russell, there are some nice QB prospects that can be had in the third and fourth, possibly even a fifth round guy without wasting a second round pick on a system QB.

I mean Kolb if we go QB in the 2nd. Of course, for the astute, we may go CB, WR, OT, C, RB, LB, or FS to which there would be another player taken.

If Carr's traded, we're drafting a QB. 'If' Kubes is in love with Kolb as others down here report, then you must take him in the 2nd because he will not be there in the 3rd.

I don't know though, you could be right and perhaps I am indeed 'retarded.' However, with that said, I mean, they did draft 2 OL starters in the 3rd last year.... so uhh......yeah, I don't really see why they MUST take a OL in the second, the approved choice for avoidance of retardation. Remember, everyone here can simply repeat what everyone else says and just change the positions.

Watch - here's an example (let's hope it doesn't digress into the dreaded 'retarded' mindset.)

Your quote - (It came after the 'retarded' crack)
"there are some nice QB prospects that can be had in the third and fourth, possibly even a fifth round guy without wasting a second round pick on a system QB."

My quote -
"there are some nice DT prospects that can be had in the third and fourth, possibly even a fifth round guy without wasting a second round pick on a system DT."

Luckily, even though we know these are 'opinion' boards, we continue to point out all others who reside and critique are simply manifestations of a draft psychosis...to which they could be right...or not...or could be...or not...or they could be.....

Stanton is a much better option IF we go QB in the second round than the system kid from Cougar High. We got more pressing needs than a QB in the second. If we take a QB on Day one, I hope it's Quinn with the first.

I'm going Landry in the first ... a better prospect than Brown .

I think they'll take a WR in the 2nd . Real deep WR draft and you can get a value pick .

I think they pick either Kolb , Trent Edwards , John Beck here .

What exactly is your definition of a "system DT" I dd not know tha there were DT pospects that were throwing p crazy good stats b ecause of the type of Defensive scheme theyplayed in. Clue us in because right now that statement seems to make very little sense.

I broke it down into easily numbered stanzas for you.

1. You think you read that. Nice. We "need" to hear this legendary phrase now thrown around. Franchise player. I don't understand why we need to hear about getting one of these so legendary players at x position. I think its pretty well common knowledge you're picking early in the draft. You need players to build around.

2. "feel" are you kidding me? If we walked away with one of those players and not having to trade up to acquire them. There's no "feel" successful. We simply are successful in our first round pick. As far as being sold on a pick. I don't think the FO needs to sell us on a pick. What they need is for him to start and produce for us in games.

3. Of course if you're picking early in the draft you're looking for cornerstones. Hell if you're later in the first round you're looking for Cornerstones. See Indy's pick of Joe Addai last year.

4. Houston improved his stock well enough to possibly be a mid first rounder even. Kolb won't go in the second round. Third earliest. The only pundits really thinking kolb goes in the second are some houston fans. Based on the past system Qb's playing in smaller conferences make me nervous. Though i will agree Troy Smith stock is putting him maybe low second to third round.

When that happens, I will certainly respond to your unbridled passion toward my post, one which prompted said reply of 'huh' - a reply that was question and exclamation at once...an entanglement of literary physics, if you will??!!

You mean you'll let me "feel" like i won. ;)

I've taken it for granted usually when a person steps to the level of bring in someone's typing skills or sentence structure there's not really much they have to add.

Everyone has to be the best at something, maybe you're the kind that insists on proper grammatical skills. If that's you're goal then hey you've topped what three people in the thread you started. Impressive start only a few thousand more members to go. Maybe winning at all costs is your deal too. But hey it's so worth it even if in the process you make yourself look bad.

In all honesty bro it's a message board. I'll save my best work for school papers, and make sure that my Profs approve of what i write. Right now that's my grammatical concern. I'm sure the writing audience doesn't really care if it's professional, casual, or slang here. Long as you get your point across and you do enough to at least back up how you feel. You don't have to attack anyone that disagreees with you or thinks that what you wrote might've been a bit cumbersome. If you want respect far as your view point is concerned open a dialogue and debate. The attacks and insults don't help hammer your point down respectably.

I agree with that entire post. We can just let it die - I'm cool with that. I'm not hostile toward anyone it was just that response to my post that consisted of 'huh' made me feel a little bit idiotic. If someone tells me they disagree with something I said, it's cool, I'll try to clear up what I meant.

I know some people don't like Kolb in the second, I have no problem with that. I just feel that if we are going to draft a QB that Kubes 'wants' then we may have to draft him higher. My feeling is that if we wait until the 3rd, we'll lose Kolb and the Michigan State kid.

Again, that's all based on us moving Carr and drafting a QB. Staley probably won't be there anyway. The draft for me is like my lottery ticket - I'll get one or two right....

...AT BEST!! :)

My draft knowledge ran so deep last year, and I do actually take some pride in knowing the players, that when we drafted Demeco, I yelled, "WTF????"

That was a uh...bad reaction by me especially with the TE Pope sitting there!

What about if the Texans trade down and still pick Levi Brown as well as pick up some extra picks? Would you like that? By the way the reason the Texans were able to start two 3rd round Offensive Tackles last year was because their Offensive Line was that pathetic. No other team would have started two 3rd Round rookie OT's. In addition, not one member of the Houston O-Line would start on any other NFL team.

I think the Levi Brown talk started because one of the Texans biggest needs is a good offensive left tackle. This is a position that the Texans have needed since the franchise came into existence. They thought the problem was taken care of when the got the big tackle in the veteran draft from the Jags. Unfortunately he did not pan out due to injuries.

The top offensive tackle in the draft is Joe Thomas, who will not be around the the Texans draft, therefore Levi Brown's name came up because he is probably the second best offensive tackle in the draft. I agree he is not worth a number eight pick. Before the Texans picked up Green I wanted Adrian Peterson since we had the worse running attack in the NFL last year. After Green's signing I then wanted either Joe Thomas or Brady Quinn but I do not expect either will be available when we draft. Therefore, we need to select the best player available where we have a need. That would be a defensive player and it might well end up being a safety. However, some time in the near future we are going to have to address the offensive line and a long term solution at running back. You can not be a contender in the NFL if you can not run the ball.

IIRC, everyone had us taking Peterson, till the senior bowl(or the Combine). Levi Impressed alot of people, and they started to shove him in at #8... even more so since we signed Green to $5million/year(or somewhere there abouts).

I think the answer to Levi is Spencer. If Spencer will be available early in the season, we pass on Levi and go for help elsewhere.

The signing of Green makes me think the Front Office is not expecting the top RB's to be available by #8, so they are probably thinking to pick up help in the secondary or a top notch WR in the first round.

only if we pick him in the late 20's.
