the lions just gave LT Jeff Backus a 6-year deal in july. they just traded for RT George Foster and RB Tatum Bell. it seems the general thought that they are 100% going after Joe Thomas may not be so...

however, we do know of matt millen's history with going heavy on one position. to me, Joe Thomas, Adrian Peterson and even Calvin Johnson are all big possibilities here.

what about quarterback? the team has publicly spoken out against drafting any QB's. smokescreen? who knows...they still seem to be stinging over the harrington fiasco. and they love josh mccown.

this trade through a wrench into the whole thing. methinks they look to trade down.

Wonder if they would be interested in David Carr and picks?

vinny is talking about a possible schaub-to-detroit trade which involves a swap of 1st rounders.

I hope whatever they do, it involves shaking things up enough that Joe Thomas's availability increases the chance that Peterson falls to us.

Boy, I'm hoping Brady Quinn. i can see CJ though. What about a Dlineman like Gaines Adams.

I'm really getting worried that Quinn is heading to houston....does anyone else get that feeling?

I thought from day one that they were going with Brady Quinn. They need a franchise QB.

With Foster they wont need Joe Thomas. With Bell they wont need AP. That leaves QB, CB, DE as bigtime needs.

Quinn is the only one worth #2. So a trade down sounds likely for someone who wants to leap frog the Bucs for Calvin Johnson. Can you say Minn?

you'd be very lucky to get a prototypical franchise QB at #8.

oh no doubt about that. i'm one of the few that like quinn more than russell. i'm just worried about getting a 1st rd quarterback with the state our team is in.

Conventional wisdom as it currently exists regarding the top of this year's NFL Draft took its first hit Thursday when the Detroit Lions agreed to a trade that will send cornerback Dre' Bly to Denver in exchange for running back Tatum Bell, offensive tackle George Foster and a fifth-round pick.

Why? Because once the deal is executed Friday, the first day of both free agency and the league's new fiscal year, the Lions will suddenly have the freedom to go in a number of directions with their No. 2 overall pick. The acquisition of Foster, who has started 45 games in the past three seasons, means Detroit isn't locked in on taking Wisconsin tackle Joe Thomas, who has been the overwhelming early consensus for the Lions' selection.

With Foster at right tackle and veteran Jeff Backus on the left side, Detroit's offensive line is no longer its crying need, freeing general manager Matt Millen and head coach Rod Marinelli to pass on Thomas if they wish and address another position in the first round.

Though it might stun some given Detroit's recent draft history at the position, the focus might now shift to receiver, where the draft's best overall prospect -- Georgia Tech's gifted Calvin Johnson -- tantalizingly awaits. While Millen drafted a first-round receiver three consecutive seasons (Charles Rogers in 2003, Roy Williams in 2004 and Mike Williams in 2005), some believe the Lions will only continue their trend of making mistakes at that position if they pass on Johnson and his scary-good package of size, speed and strength.

Another option that now looks more plausible at No. 2 for the Lions is Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, who could be groomed for a year behind Detroit starter Jon Kitna. Quinn's stock could be on the rise again after the Combine, where he reportedly impressed teams in his interview sessions and also ripped off an eye-opening 24 reps on the bench press.

This much is also clearer in light of the Detroit-Denver trade: Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson will not be the Lions' pick, given that Bell gives the Lions insurance at that position should starter Kevin Jones not return quickly enough in 2007 from the foot injury he suffered last year.

thanks vinny, could be another good trade. i see it as a great deal for the lions. and CJ is just a beast...at least he could catch Vicks passes.

first, I'd like to say I'm very upset that I haven't got any of these "PMs"...

Secondly, what would Atlanta do if the Raiders go with CJ??

i'm guessing they'll wait till draft day before making this deal. and even if they go before, they can draft joe thomas, who's just as good of a player to have, especially for atlanta's offense.

The other aspect of the Dre Bly trade comes from the following quote I saw in an NFL experts' blog:
Denver had been the only team to express strong interest in Bly

Granted, it was a Yahoo! blog, but still: could this provide some sort of signaling of draft intent on behalf of the Texans? That is, clearly we have need at CB, and yet we did not express "strong interest" in Bly. I'm starting to think more and more that we may either trade down a bit in the 1st, to target a tier1 CB, OR snag a CB in round 2.

Of course, there is so much time between now and the draft, and with free agency just beginning, who knows what will happen. We will have to wait for the dust to settle, but reading tea leaves is fun nonetheless.

I think Atlanta would hope Landry falls to them at 10. If so they run up to the podium...

I'm really hoping we get Landry at 8, that would do wonders for our secondary alone, plus maybe get a cb in rd 2 or 2nd day.

Yeah, I'm with you there, Ole Miss. Landry would be a beast patrolling the secondary. I'd like to see him on the team. :doot:

I second that Thunder. After all the years we've been here, thought we might get an inside scoop every so often.

From GBN:

(2) Atlanta acquires the #2 pick overall from Detroit in exchange for Atlanta's #1 (10th overall) and #3 picks in 2007 and #2 pick in 2008 and QB Matt Schaub.

I think that would be a bit much, but Vick/CJ would be strong.

I am also curious as to the Backus deal; if it is high salary and low signing bonus - and they could get a 2nd rndr for him - they might take Thomas anyway.

Other projected deals on latest GBN mock:
1) Tampa Bay acquires the #1 pick overall from Oakland for the #4 pick and Tampa Bay's #3 pick this year and #1 pick in 2008. = = to take Russell

3) Houston acquires the #3 pick overall from Cleveland in exchange for Houston's #1 (8th overall) and #3 picks in 2007 and a #3 in 2008 and QB David Carr. = = to take AP
- - I don't see us trading up, especially that high, but I would do that deal for Thomas if he was there. ( I like AP and I think he will be great but we need the OT in the worst way)

Quinn won't make it past the Vikes IMHO... I just don't see him coming here, but I didn't see Mario either... So who knows what is going to happen come draft day, I sure don't...
