INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The Detroit Lions put the franchise tag on defensive tackle Cory Redding, team president Matt Millen said Wednesday at the NFL's annual scouting combine.

The move prevents Redding from becoming an unrestricted free agent next month.

Redding emerged as a dominant player for the Lions last year when defensive tackle Shaun Rogers was out of the lineup. He made 37 tackles, including eight sacks, in his fourth season with the team after being drafted in 2003.

So much for bringing him back to Texas. Seemed like a nice idea though.

I don't know much about the guy but it is almost laughable that the Lions would have anybody worth franchising.

The irony here, is that a couple of years ago, it was questionable as to whether or not they were going to release him outright.

That is big money for a one year wonder.... you have to wonder about the value for money on that deal.

Am I right in thinking he is getting average of top 5 DT contracts??
