Yeah... someone who throws 32 passing yards against a college defense is perfect for us. The difference between him and Carr, is we can blame everything for smith to the fact he can't see over our offensive line.

IMHO, If Troy Smith is sitting on the board when we make our selection in the second rd. we should jump on him in a heart beat....

Troy "tater Tot" Smith will be lucky to be draft in the first. If he slides into day two, I wouldn't be surprised.

Our Line-

OLT LG C RG RT

Spencer 6'-5" Pitts 6'-4" Flanagan 6'-5" Weary 6'-4" Winston 6'-6"

Tater Tot- 6'

OK you may want to ignore the height issue, but the NFL will not. The lost of Ginn Jr. exposed the tater in the national chapionship game. You can throw up as many stats as you want. The bottom line is the heigth and the national campionship game will force him down the boards. His speed will give him a chance to make it. It's going to take a couple of years to get the guy on line IMHO. He not only has mechnical problems, he's got to learn to throw between the gaps in the o-line. That is not an easy thing to learn. His heigth makes him miss open recievers. And in the NFL, where the windows are small, short and quick to close, that is not a good thing for a short QB.

Smith is the only non-Russell QB I'd be interested in, but it is VERY risky.

His weaknesses were exploited in the Florida game. When he was forced to step into the pocket by the DEs he couldn't see over the line. When he tried to escape athletic DEs he wasn't as elusive or strong as Vick/Young/McNabb. That being said... his athleticism and arm strength can't be overlooked. Neither can his production.

Evidently he is a legitimate 6'0". He's a smaller McNabb or a more athletic Brees. Since this system puts such an emphasis on the bootleg, throwing on the move, and the situational deep ball, I think he really could be a special player and high value pick at #40 for us.

The height is an issue to overcome... but given his track record and Brees and Garcia's recent success... you can't dismiss him on the height and one bad game alone. He's not Flutie small.

i agree......he is a great athlete and with a powerful arm....i think he would be a good fit because we eally need a qb to be able to run especially if we dont do much upgrading of the oline....that said i would take him in the second if he falls to us and in the first i still say forget the rb and get landry or nelson....

Now compare Smith's college stats to Carr's college stats and see what you get.

Well... he needs good tackles. If he's flushed to the middle he will probably struggle... if he can escape out of the tackles then he'll be fine. He's really a boom or bust player... everything is there except for the height. The height hurt him against Florida, but so did Ginn's injury and some pretty bad playcalling.

He'll be a workout warrior. Will go early 2nd/late first with a great Senior Bowl.

carr had better everything except ints and yards per completion was about 1 yard shorter than smiths.....diff is we wont have to throw smith to the wolves right away and he wont be a franchise guy and have ton of pressure rght away like carr.....we f'd up carr no one else.....capers and casserly did a number on him ....we might as well start over with the qb.....

The difference between Carr and Smith's numbers is Troy Smith played in the Big 10 in a relatively conservative offense. Carr played in the WAC in a pass happy offense (Not saying Carr wasn't a stud, he lit up Big 10 teams too). It's like comparing Vince Young and Colt Brennan's stats... they don't tell the whole story.

Here is a little about Smith's "off field issues":

You hear it all the time out of the sports world.
A tremendous athlete with loads of potential gets into trouble off the field and quickly heads down a slippery slope. Ohio State senior quarterback Troy Smith has loads of potential and he has had off the field problems, but he did what others seldom can: he never slipped.
While a junior, Smith was suspended for Ohio State’s bowl game against Oklahoma State, as well as the first game of the 2005 season, because he accepted $500 from a booster. Some athletes find trouble off the field and it follows them until it eventually sinks their career.
Not Smith.

I seriously doubt this incident hurts him at all...

And I think Nelson is going to shoot up the draft boards and be ranked as the best DB coming out....

texans83
01-23-2007, 11:07 AM
I just wonder if that might be the case for not picking him up in the 2nd round. I still believe thats why they didnt get bush bc all those things that were being brought up about his fam and the house situation. Who knows I just hope they are really smart and look at every possible player and not just address what we need. I do know we need a safety and I think laundry will be the best player on the board at that time. This is a really good draft for corners so I think they will look in the 3or4 round for a corner.

I agree, that we need a new QB, but not at all costs.. not to where we are taking chances on the first thing that glitters.

We've got Sage, and we may get Plummer, we also may be able to turn Bradlee & Q into something, who knows.....

We just need to build our team, get our cap numbers straight, then in the future when the opportunity presents itself, we can make a move for a QB, without really hurting our team....... ala Denver & Jay Cutler.

Right now, missing on a second round pick would really set us back.

i dont like sage and plummer like otheres have stated is merely an older carr...granted he is a little better....even if we start any of the guys you say we still need a rookie to mold....these guys are all getting older and wont last much longer.. why not get a good qb that was a 1st rounder but is dropping somewhat.....

This is a little off the subject but I know that Amobi Okoye from Louisville is putting up some great numbers and turning heads at the senior bowl and he is only 19. They are even calling him the next warren sapp. What do you all think about picking up him at 8th spot instead of laundry. I just dont know which one we need more. We deff deen secondary help bad but also we need pash rushing help for williams. I know if we did pick him up we would deff have a great young d-line. What are your thoughts.

I dont know if any of yall looked at espn this morning but man were they dissing Kolb. They were talking about the 1st practice and how he fumbled the snap and that he was holding on the the ball way to long on 7on7 drills.

Yea but im confused with everyone on here, I think I would rather have Kolb in the 3rd round and pick up someone else in the 2nd. I think we could really groom Kolb and he has the ideal size of a nfl QB.

amazingandre

i like smith better....but thats just me you know....i think he is way more mobile and thats what the texans need right now. kolb is mobile but smith is more....plus i think smith is the better passer....only downfall is his height....realistically if he was 4 inches taller he is the number one qb in this draft.....

Bradlee will be entering his third year next season..... Quinton Porter his second.

& I'm not saying we don't get a QB in the second, I'm just saying we shouldn't reach for a QB in the second, or the third.

I'm not a TroySmith fan, I'm not a KevinKolbe fan.... If Kubiak thinks either of those guys are worth our 2nd or 3rd.... then that's fine. If Jamarcus Russell falls to the eight pick, I'd be all over that.

If we can trade the Raiders our 1st plus David Carr & VanPelt.... lets do it..

I'm just saying we have to be sure about the guy to give up a first day pick. We could use first day picks all over our offensive/deffensive line, our LB corpse, & or DBs.....

Shrine Game

Jeff Rowe, QB, Nevada (6'5" 230lbs) – He performed very well at Shrine Game. The most outstanding QB of the game, Rowe’s deep TD to Paul Williams was perfectly thrown. Rowe kept plays alive well by holding the ball high while scrambling and keeping his eyes down field. He hung in to take hits after delivering the ball and showed great mobility for a guy his size.

John Beck, BYU – Beck showed off good zip on short and intermediate stuff and good timing throws, but his play fakes were somewhat half-hearted, and questions about his deep arm have not been answered. A WCO team might take him in the 3rd, but he seems like a 2nd day pick to me.

Lester Ricard, Tulane – Lester under threw deep balls badly and played with a lack of urgency. His release was very slow and the ball sometimes hung in the air for what seemed like an eternity. He shouldn’t get drafted, but he might because of his size.

Matt Gutierrez, Idaho State – Matt reverted to his low delivery under pressure yet again, and threw touch passes more than crisp passes. He’s a late round project.

Drew Tate, Iowa – Tate moved well and got good zip on his short stuff, but he was mostly erratic. I’ll be very shocked if he gets drafted.

Zac Taylor, Nebraska – Poor Zac was under fire for a lot of the night, but he did show that good zip on his short and intermediate stuff and decisiveness as a QB. He also showed off his ability to move the pocket. Taylor is solid early 2nd day pick for a WCO team.

I would take Troy Smith if he was available in the 4th. Otherwise it would be a reach, end of story.
