GIANTS' SHORT-TERM FUTURE FULL OF POSSIBLE SURPRISES

Okay, we know that we promised to share the "stunning" news that we've picked up regarding the future of the Giants last night, but we were putting up other stories and doing other holiday-related stuff and wanted to have the time to sit down and focus on this one.

Anyway, here's what we've picked up, all from our network of league and industry sources.

First, former Texans and Redskins G.M. Charley Casserly is regarded as the top prospect to replace Ernie Accorsi in New York. Casserly was interviewed for the job last week.

Second, New England V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli wants the Giants G.M. job, but Bob and Jonathan Kraft (who own the Patriots) don't want to let him go -- and the Giants apparently are inclined to defer to them, which Cleveland owner Randy Lerner supposedly did a couple of years ago before Phil Savage was hired as the Browns G.M.

Third, the Patriots (as we hear it) are more inclined to let coach Bill Belichick leave than Pioli. Myra Kraft, the wife of Bob Kraft, is said to be very troubled by reports of Belichick's alleged "relationship" with a married woman in New Jersey, which information surfaced earlier this year in connection with the woman's divorce proceedings.

Fourth, the Giants aren't inclined to hire Belichick because of those same dynamics. "They don't need another P.R. nightmare," said one source. Just last week, Page Six of the New York Post disclosed that the divorce complaint has been amended by Vincent Shenocca to accuse his wife and Belichick of adultery.

Fifth, if Casserly gets the G.M. job, his first choice for head coach will be former Packers coach Mike Sherman, who was hired as an assistant with the Texans while Casserly's tenure was winding down.

Sixth, a dark horse candidate for the Giants job is Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Morningsomething. (Insert shudder here.)

Seventh, and finally, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis wants the Giants job, but realizes that it could be a dead end in the short term. He likewise doesn't want to leave the Irish so soon after his arrival two seasons ago.

So there you have it. The current talk from folks in the know. Regardless of what actually happens, it's gonna be an interesting ride for the G-men over the next couple of weeks.

OK, everyone who is smarter than Casserly should apply for that job. They should have many, many choices. I could sure use the money.

He must really be a good interviewee. Because his track record really sucks at his last two stops.

Casserly is good with the media, which makes him a good candidate in NY. Like PFT said, he'd be a figurehead.

That story is full of a lot of BS. Casserley is not serious candidate (as noted by the real media) for that job BECAUSE of his lame a** track record. He has done absolutely NOTHING in the NFL and he ruined the Redskins and the Texans. I am surprised that story doesn't have them wanting to trade for David Carr since the Giants are so interested in people that have done nothing at the NFL level.

Speaking of people that have done nothing at the NFL level ... Mike Sherman as HC? ... lol. Those jobs in NY are too coveted to be given to those two baffoons.

BTW, if the Giants don't need another P.R. nightmare do you honestly think they would hire Casserley who is getting the most blame for the current state of the Texans and the blame for screwing up the Texans #1 pick this season?

I also find it hard to believe a team would pass on Belichick because of rumors about his marriage. I'd take the guy in a heartbeat.

I hope Casserly lands a job SOMEWHERE. That will make at least one more team worse than us long term. I DONT like a Cowboy division rival getting weaker, however. I cant wait for the day that Percels (thats what Jones used to call him) retires and Jerry takes over the draft full time again. Oh for another Quincy Carter at the helm for 'them Cowboys'.

So does this mean that he'll trade us Osi Umenyiora for a 7th round draft pick?

So we went from a report noting Casserly was like the bottom of the list to a top prospect? Crazy. Good for the Giants, maybe we can make some "quality trades" with them. I'm sure Sherman and Casserly will make an outstanding duo.

As for Belechik getting his groove on - interesting. Apparently someone likes the frumpy hooded sweater look out there.

Maybe Cass' NFC East ties has something to do with it.

I like Sherman. I hope he stays.

Maybe Casserly will trade for Babin. :secret:

Strahan coming back to Houston. gap toof and all.

<that's how rumors start>

The Patriots would be stupid to let Belichick go, especially over something in his personal life that was never proven to be true.

I had hoped that the Texans would look at Scott Pioli as our GM before Rick Smith was hired.

Strahan back in his home city for Babin? I would take it, though Strahan is already 32 years old.

The Giants want Polian and Belichick, but the Kraft family won't let them go.

This has NY Post rumor written all over it. If it sells a few million papers its worth selling their integrity.

For anyone to think that the Giants would get Polian and Belicick is just insane. Polian...maybe...if you back up the Brinks truck. As for Bill, he aint going anywhere...

New York jobs are no longer coveted anymore...they are more hassle than they are worth. Too much media in today's mini-universe of NYC. How many players and coaches in all sports have just been ruined by the NY media?

As for Casserley, I would be very surprised if he was made GM of the Giants. Casserley is just currently wearing a scarlet letter due to his hand in drafting Carr, T.Johnson, Babin, and his involvement in the Mario/Bush/Young PR debacle. I agree with another poster that he just has too much baggage for the NY public and media to stomach Casserley as their 'savior'.

We should keep Mike Sherman. Getting the Texans offense to work both well and consistently would be another strong credential on his resume as he looks for his next NFL head coaching gig.

I agree that keeping him is in the best interest of the team. However, having him stay if a HC job comes open is a whole nother thing. IMO, he gets a HC gig offer, he is out the door and I wouldn't blame him on bit. He has pretty good HC credentials and probably should be one elswhere.
