View Full Version : With Cutler taking over the Broncos..Plummer a Texan?

Now that Cutler has been named the starting QB for the Broncos next week, the rumor mill could really build up some steam. Plummer can't be happy about it and would probably welcome a chance to reunite with Kubiak.

The prospect of Plummer as the starting Texans QB doesn't exactly make me bubble over with excitement but on some levels it does make perfect sense and could work out well for everyone involved (even including Lil' Davey)

Possible plan -
Trade Carr to Bucs, Redskins, Browns, or Vikings
Pickup Plummer
Draft a project QB in the 3rd round or later

Plummer isn't Manning or Brady but he is far superior to Carr and would allow us to start competing immediately while we groom a long term successor in the wings.

Just an idea. Discuss.

No Plummer. In fact nothing for the offense outside of O line and a late round QB in the draft. Make Kubiak earn his keep through development rather than acquisition. Invest everything else on Defense just to cover our butts in the event Kubiak cannot get this offense going.

I have to disagree with you that Plummer is "far superior to Carr". I think Carr is better than Plummer. I'd rather go with Sage as the starter than have Plummer.

As for trading Carr to another team, I'm not at all opposed to doing that if it'll improve our team. I don't, however, think Carr is the main problem. Aside from that boneheaded interception he threw yesterday, I thought Carr played a solid game.

Is he an All-Pro? No, but he's better than average, which I'm willing to accept for now because we are below average in so many other areas. I'm hoping Carr will continue to progress as Kubiak and Calhoun continue to coach him, and the organization continues to add better players.

So are you saying this team doesn't need a running back. I think we do. I often wonder just how much better we would be if D. Davis played with us still.

If Carr is better than average, than you may need to examine your expectations for what real NFL QBs can do to help their team win games. Just my opine.

As for Plummer, he is much better than Carr. Anyone not blinded with homer-itis knows that.

We definitely need a starting running back. We also need more depth on the offensive line. Depending on how well Spencer comes back and how much Winston develops this year, we may also need two starting caliber tackles.

What I am saying is that we should no longer invest in the offensive skill positions, only the trenches. The quickest way for this team to get to .500 is through the defense as we wait for Carr's and AJ's contracts to sunset.

I don't for one minute believe our front office is ready to demote let alone trade Carr. Though I could possibly conceive that Plummer be cut and pass to us through waivers.

I can't honestly believe you or anyone else would propose Plummer over Carr. I'd rather watch dink and dunk with absolutely no balls thrown downfield more than ten yards, than Plummer ball characterized primarily by wild throws and costly interceptions.

Though I'm not certain -- in such a scenario -- doesn't the trade deadline prohibit us trading Carr until season's end any way? Let alone the question of eating his bonus -- fat chance.

I believe this is the last year of Plummer's contract, which should make him an unrestricted free agent.

I really don't like the idea of Plummer, but at the right price and if you can unload Carr somewhere and get some value, maybe so.

Would like to see how the deals would work out, but just getting Plummer because he is out there really isn't a good idea. You have to work it out the right way and the price has to be right.

I'm not saying Carr is great, by any means. But based on my observation of other starting quarterbacks, I think he is better than the average NFL QB.

I don't even call Carr's performance better than average at this point. I think he's been mostly average at best this season, with occasional flashes of both good and bad, and my basis for keeping him is that (a) he has demonstrated stretches of sufficient improvement this season and (b) I don't think we'll find better any time soon without eating Carr's contract and picking up some $50M+ rookie with a bunch of the same question marks.

I question the judgment of anybody who doesn't agree that Plummer is a lot worse than average at this point in his career. I have seen several full Broncos games this season and Plummer consistently makes absolutely horrible reads and misplaces a lot of passes. Plummer in many respects has a superior supporting cast -- better OL and run game, much better defense, while the Texans have better WRs -- and despite that has amassed a substantially worse stat line (11 TDs/12 INTs/55.6%/1994 yards) vs Carr's (10 TDs/7 INTs/69.9%/2217 yards). Then again, "stats don't matter" and neither do evaluatory tools like game tape. It's hard to remember observing a guy who received this much criticism for being a family man or having his hair cut a certain way but since that's what 90% of his analysis boils down to around here, I guess I'm hoping for too much.

First, why would you pick-up a project QB if Plummer would be your starter? You might pick-up a high draft choice as a QB and let him sit for a season or two to watch and learn while Plummer and the Texans continue to suck.

Second, I would strongly disagree that Plummer is far superior and would ask what you base that statement on?

Because the guy is not on the Texans roster. If you have an opinion of a guy not on the roster you cant be a blinf homer? That is not a hard concept to figure out.

I am not saying that Plummer is going to take us to the Super Bowl but he is better than Carr (how anyone could think Carr is better than just about any NFL QB is beyond me...) and would allow us time to groom a true longterm replacement while allowing us to compete in the meantime. This would make it easier to attract free agents, stop this insepid culture of mediocrity, and keep morale high both in the locker room and the stands.

Plummer has won a lot of big games and gets punked by Brady and Manning so he doesnt make it to the Super Bowl. Losing to Brady and Manning isn't something that is exclusive to Plummer.

We cant spend another 1st round pick on QB. We have too many needs on both lines and in the secondary. Based on Kubiak's track record we dont need to worry about early picks for RB.

In addition, I did'nt advocate picking up Plummer. I only asked to discuss it and stated that on some levels it makes sense while still not making me that excited about the prospects.

Jerek I'd be fine with handing Plummer the job for a year or two while we groom the real replacement for David Carr. I've never been in the anti-Carr camp and I think you probably remember that from our pre-draft conversations where I was for giving David Carr another year to see if Kubiak could work some magic with his career. I think that now, after a majority of this year has passed we all can see that in a number of ways David is much improved. In other ways he's no different than the day he first walked into training camp.

Mostly I think that he's done here because he will never, ever win the affection or even tolerance of the fans. He's the figurehead for everything that's gone wrong with this team since the day they started operations and I doubt he'll ever escape that. He'll always be the guy who lost about a billion games when the Texans first started play.

I think we're at a moment where the best thing for everyone is a quick divorce.

Once that's done the inevitable question of who do we put in his place arrives and that's where Plummer is the perfect fit for this team. We don't want to make the mistake of throwing another rookie out there too soon so we need a placeholder who knows the system and can either play well and slide into the veteran backup role with ease or can be easily disposed of if he plays poorly and isn't well received.

There's not a better fit in the NFL than Jake Plummer for this role.

Carr doesnt have any trade value to any of those teams.

The Bucs have Gradkowski, who looks like the second best rookie QB behind Young (jury is out on Cutler).

Redskins have Campbell, who is doing pretty good considering he only knows half the playbook right now.

The Browns have Charlie Frye, who is a below average QB right now, but there is a possibility he might have that IT factor for a QB. He is a playmaker at QB and should make less mistakes as he gains experience.

The Vikings are most likely going to draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd round next year & Brad Johnson (never great, never awful, always consistent) will be the QB until the rookie is ready.

The only team in the league that we could probably trade Carr to is the Raiders & they arent gonna want to have another highly-paid QB to waste cap room behind that awful O-line.

I personally think we should keep Carr & maybe draft Kolb if he is available in the 3rd.

No matter what the "Carr haters" say they cannot convince me that Carr is not at least an average NFL QB.

And no matter what the "Carr lovers" say they cannot convince me that he is anything better than an average NFL QB.

Now, hang on. If you're going to talk Titans, I think their win will have more to do with Vince returning to Houston than anything else...

No way they trade Carr. Kubes is going to argue aobut how far he's come in one year, and that will be enough for McNair. They will run the exact formula that they did this year. Another first and second-rounder on Defense (I suspect LB/Secondary), free-agent a lineman or two, and grab a center/guard in a later round. IMO, Kubiak believes he can fix the team with the personnel he has, but wants to increase the talent on the defensive side.

What big game has plummer won? He is not called Jake "the mistake" for nothing.

I am not a blind Carr fan, he has a lot of faults but so do a lot of other players on the roster. So why not save the money it would take to sign plummer and just keep Carr while drafting a qb of the future in the second or third round, depending who is available. This way the team does not take the cap hit for the signing bonus.

The difference between 8-8 and 9-7 with Griese vs 10-6 with Plummer ... HUGE. Or not as much.

13-3 ... because of Jake, or in spite of Jake? I forgot, it's a pure cause and effect correlation!

Quick, where's Kurt Warner playing ... the Rams won a Super Bowl because of him! Brett Favre, we must trade for him right now! The 2002 Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Bucs were 12-4 ... why, you ask? Your right, and by no means am I a Carr Pimp. I really don't care if its the re-incarnation of Ryan Leaf (okay maybe thats a stretch) as long as he can be coached by Kubiak. He doesn't have to be Montana, just someone that works within the system given him. My point to KoolAid is to not make blanket statements about so and so being better when their career marks after 5 years are eerily similar. I dont think Plummers first 4 years in Arizona were any more affective than Carrs. When did Plummer start winning? Simple. When he was coached by Kubiak and Shanahan with one of the better running attacks in the league (some of their Defenses weren't so bad either).

I'll make a bet with you or Jerek or both . You take Carr and the Texans and I'll take the Titans in two weeks . We'll bet avatars signatures whatever you want . This is like Karl Malone telling Ralph Sampson I'm coming and kicking your ass .

So instead of telling people how dumb they are lets go your opinion against mine .

Your going to take the Titans? And you call yourself a Texan fan? How could you cheer for the Titans? I hate the Titans. I hate Bud Adams. I would think a lot of people in Houston would feel the same way. Is it just because of Vince Young that you disown your team? Thats a man crush. You must be a UT homer. Congrats on not making the Big 12 championship, go Horns.

And if you like Karl Malone, you are a fascist. :challenge

What you people need to understand is that we should take the San Diego Chargers aproach to rebuilding this team. We should work on improving our O-line, secondary, and RBs, then when we get all that in place, we should then draft a rookie QB to take over the reigns. Stop with this Carr Lover, Carr Hater stuff. Carr is NOT a hall of fame, Peyton Manning like QB, but he doesn't suck either. He is serviceable for the time being while we continue to strengthen the holes that the Casserly Capers reigm left us with. Changing the QB right now is rediculous. Kubiak will keep Carr good enough until we are a 10 win team. Then he doesn't cut it in the post season, we can think about a going a new direction. But not till then.

I wouldn't mind trading Carr and getting Plummer in here as a stopgap measure. That way we go into the draft with the flexibility to draft something other than QB, if necessary (rather than being forced to reach on a QB in the draft). It would also end the Carr regime, which couldn't come fast enough. He needs a change of scenery.

This team is AT LEAST two offseasons from being worth a darn. Oh and how many times have we said this?.

Well if Sage broke his hand, won't Kubs want a good back up?? I mean how long could Sage be out???

What's the bet? Stat lines? The W? Who gets the most boos/cheers?

I forgot, Vince urinates sunshine and could pull off the win without leaving his hotel room. If your bet is designed to use the W as proof of QB superiority, I'll have to decline, but let me know what exactly you had in mind.

Sage is gone for the season, the Texans signed Bradlee Van Pelt. On another note, Flannagan is gone for the season too.

I'm not betting for Vince ... I'm betting against Carr there is a big difference . I'm betting Carr does'nt show up and thats what kills this team . The #1 pick of the 2002 draft will not show up on the biggest stage of this teams history .

The bet is who wins .

Now, hang on. If you're going to talk Titans, I think their win will have more to do with Vince returning to Houston than anything else...

I have no doubt that Vince Young and the Titans are going to come in here as the favourites. But I think that will upset us enough that we'll play them even tougher than we did last go 'round. Vince's stats won't look spectacular at all when we are done with him.

David is going to have his same solid stats. We're going to move the ball, and we will win the game.

I forgot, Vince urinates sunshine and could pull off the win without leaving his hotel room.

Can we have a little realism here for a change?

Technically speaking Vince doesn't "urinate sunshine". He urinates a complex enzyme (patent pending) that gives off a vanilla-hazelnut aroma and causes clouds in the vicinity to dissipate, thus creating the illusion of "instant wee-wee sunshine". This, combined with unique pheromones in the urine cause those around him to feel positive and happy resulting in the belief that sunshine just appeared from the end of his.... longhorn.

He admittedly can pull off a win without leaving his hotel room but it's worth noting that someone has to give him a wake up call so that he does it at the right time. A win at 10:00AM when they don't play until 3:00PM is worth nothing.

Great, I got the Texans to win. When they do, you have to pimp my Avatar..... for the rest of the season.

If the Titans luck into a win, I'll change my avatar to whatever you want till the Texans beat the Titans. Next year, 2008, 2009 whatever.

I kinda thought you were looking to get a Vince one .

Someone said Plummer was in the last year of his contract and that's incorrect. He's signed through '09 and with a base of more than 5 million next year, he is a sure cut on March 1 and a likely Texan unless Carr pulls some magic dust out of his ass and goes at least 2-2 over the last 4.

If they go in a different direction at QB ... I do'nt want another retread . I've heard Kubiak likes Sage and he would get first shot while they find the heir apparent .

Sage can play on my squad. He's got a nice touch on the ball and throws the 30 yard pass accurately. Also seems to see the entire field. Refreshing. He seems more than serviceable. DC can be the backup. Having two decent QB's is not a bad idea. I don't think DC gets traded because I don't think the value will be there in exchange. Plus he's a company man and he's got plenty of cash. He needs to compete next year and be ready to sit a spell. Just being realistic. I am sure they think he could MATURE into a better leader and scholar of the game.
