Jets' Mangini, Texans' Kubiak learning the head-coaching ropes

HEMPSTEAD - Gary Kubiak spent nine seasons in the NFL as a backup quarterback and 12 more as an assistant before being named the Texans' coach. First-year Jets coach Eric Mangini spent the previous 11 seasons as an assistant at various stops around the league.

So while they might not be NFL rookies, they are rookie head coaches, and this is the time of the year when NFL rookies hit the proverbial wall, unaccustomed to the lengthy season and lack of a December break.

Coaches included, to some extent.

"You think you're ready or you say you're ready, but the load that you take on is something that I don't know that you can ever really say you expected,'' Kubiak said yesterday. "I'm learning to cope with all these things as well as getting ready to play football each week.''

The Jets (5-5) host the Texans (3-7) Sunday at 1 in a game crucial to their tenuous playoff aspirations.
