View Full Version : Desperate needs

Things might change, but we deperately need to go after a starting running back, shutdown corner, defensive tackle (our pick ups so far this season does not look like Dalton will resolve this. Hope I'm wrong) and an outside linebacker that equals Demeco in ability. Uh, did somebody say this was what we needed last draft? Well, we still do and I'm not knocking Mario, Ryans or the "twins" in 3rd. Just interesting, we have same needs & maybe a left OT and a TE might be needed. What happened to Putzier and Owens?:hunter:

Maybe we can shop at Costco and pick these things up.

As for the TE, the coaching staff says that the involvement of the wide receivers/TEs is going to be very dependant on the particular matchups in a week.

Man....Speaking of the D-Line....I think they need to ask Weaver to gain some weight and make DT his full time position...I don't think we can afford to start Mario and Weaver at the ends...JMO....

Wasn't that why both Mario & Weaver were signed? DE? Evidently, somebody making decisions for the team disagrees with you.

I think Weaver started with the Texans as a DT....remember ? All the complaints that we were paying DE money to a guy to play DT???

Im just sayin....both of them are SDE in my opinion....One of em needs to go to DT so we can get freeney/Mathis kind of guy on the edge...again, JMO....

I wouldn't neccessarily say they disagree...I don't think they have all the answers themselves...

JMO, but I say we play Babin and/or Peek from here on out and find out if they can play DE in this league. Then, maybe Weaver is the answer at DT in place of Payne.

I agree, but I think Peek is legit.

If Mario does gain double teams, and he has, put him on Peeks side and let Peek reap the benefits.

Peek has to hit the field more frequently. Pass rushing specialist DE's should not be out as much as he has over his career.

Wasn't he dinged up??

IMO, our D-line has some real issues....I don't think we can continue to play Weaver and Mario....We are essentially playing with 4 DT type players....Where is the pressure supposed to come from???

Originally I like the idea of Mario playing WDE and Weaver at SDE...Well...It didn't take long for me to figure out that Mario wasn't quite as good at WDE as I thought he'd be(lack of a fast twitch...seriously)...So where does that leave weaver ????

Thats why I think he needs to gain weight and go to DT full time, and let Babin and Peek rotate at the weakside DE....

either that or just switch back to the 3-4:shoot:

I've been saying for a while that we cant have both Mario and Weaver at DE at the same time, simply not enough speed on the field. I thin Mario should lose a few pound (5 or 10), rember he is playing at a weight where he could be a DT, in order to maximize his speed and Weaver should be moved inside next to the Johnsons with Peek and Babin battling for the WDE spot.
Anyway, keep in mind everyone on this D is very young, so with some experiance and some healthy veterans (come back Kaille) we should see more consitentcy and a continued increase in productivity.

Not really. Im not so sure that Dayne and Gado couldnt be a great one two punch for us. Fact of the matter is that our Oline is sucking at run blocking.. and it makes our RBs look pretty bad.

shutdown corner,

No such thing anymore. Dunta Robinson is a great talent though and with a pass rush, Robinson and Faggins or McLeon may be just fine.. if not well above average.

defensive tackle

Definatly a big need.. and one that we are very unlikely to adequately fill before next years offseason.

and an outside linebacker that equals Demeco in ability.

For sure.. and the best way to get one is to target one in the first or second round of next year's draft.

Dunta is good...But I don't think he is the best cover guy out there...

There may not be shutdown corners anymore, but coverage gets a lot better than what D.Rob's shown...

We need another corner.

I totally agree, but I see the agression and fire in him that I wish more guys had on this team. Babin costed us SOO MUCH, but it is safe to say he has more tatoos than talent and is a TOTAL bust.

Anyone missing Robaire Smith, the first bad move (or the 2nd depending on draft) by the Kubiak regime.

What team in the entire leauge would take Dayne and Gado over their top two running backs??

We need a new team!!! JK!!!

We do need help in the secondary, linebackers, and both O and D lines, but we do have good players at the position. We just need help.

Our RB's are only as good as our line, except Dayne who is a big back who is way too slow. Not to mention he owes Spencer for putting him out for the season!!! Think about it, Denver let him go and so did NY. Sam Gado is un-proven, i think he would be a good 3rd down back AKA Bettis who could compliment a fast back such as Lundy.

Smith just needs to do a better job evaluating talent via drafts, trades, or FA.

Weaver moving back to tackle. Are you kidding me?! He's the second most productive D-lineman we have behind Williams. Kubiak is always talking about putting the best linemen out there. Mario and Weaver are our two best DE's. Move Weaver inside and you're instantly not putting the best four players on the field. Weaver is our second best DE and he's earned that spot. He doesn't deserve to get shuffled around.

You wanna talk about desperate needs. Okay how about this. Offensive tackle. It looks like Weigart isn't starting next game. So we're going in with Winston and Salaam, and who's backing them up. A guard. Are you ****ting me? I swear! Wand is just sitting on his ass somewhere and knows the system. I'm not saying he has to be the starter, but C'MON we need some semblance of depth.

As much fun as it would be to sign a superstar at every position, that just isnt possible. Gado is an unknown.. but had a great year with Green Bay.. Dayne struggled in New York and looked ok in Denver.

Niether have shown anything to make me believe they lack talent, and really.. a superstar in one system can be a total loser in another.. we dont yet know if Dayne and Gado will be losers, or superstars, in our system.. and we wont know until we get an Oline in front of them that can open a hole, and hold it open for more than a split second.

we don't need this player and that we need 2 things and that is not personnel

2) Holes for a RB to go through, not slits that close faster than a girl's interest when you say BROKE

desperate needs ... right guard, right tackle, free safety. (left tackle also depending on spencer's chance at recovery)

needs ... outside linebacker, runningback, cornerback, and tons of depth.

it still baffles me that we had the most incredible offseason, and then mucked it up. not a single member of our TC/preseason runningbacks are playing (DD, lundy, antwain smith, taylor, morency). we cut our starting left tackle (wand). we cut a starting DT and MLB (robaire & cowart). we just now cut our best nickel CB (p-burnt) and never did try to assist our second weakest area (DB). our perfect offseason really crapped out quick because of the changes made. i'm trying really hard to follow blind faith and trust that these players didnt fit the system, but i'm having lots of trouble hoping that we dont become the denver JV texans. rockets fans can relate ... how have van gundy's JV knicks been doing?

hey Scoot- the Texans need to maximize their first pick & fill the most glaring need since day one & thats a left tackle. Spencer may return and be serviceable (prove me wrong) @ LT but usually these things really hurt the players lateral mobility & may be susceptable to nagging injurys due to compensation of the afflicted acl.

I wanted to post this earlier (work) but their is a new in-depth book out on the market by Michael Jenkins (author of Moneyball) titled "The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game" he examines the novalty of the NFL LT and goes behind the scenes to grasp a better concept of the value of these giants and why they are one of the highest paid positional players in the NFL. the 2007 NFL draft should have some excellent athletic LT's for a change so I would attempt to trade down, aguire multiple picks than take your targeted prospect for that position. that would allow Spencer to slide over and fill the RT position (if healthy).

Free safety falling to the 2nd rd. I like Brandon Meriweather (brawl aside) he drops because of the character issues. after the 2nd (depending upon what the Texans can get by trading down) CB's & LB's. the Texans will aquire a RB via FA or possibly another trade. all in all we just gotta be patient and let our young players develop and the coaching staff time to weed out the underperformers (PB). :twocents:

Needs IMO (in order):

RB - help!
FS - help!
S - help!
OLB - can Wong drop this down?- Greenwood has been bad against the run
CB - will Faggins drop this down?
DL - need some aggression
OL - last draft will help down the road
WR
TE
FB - do we use this position anymore?
PR-KR - we missed on Bush to set us up for WR and this position for years to come - Oh well

Hey I didn't say Weaver sucked...I like Weaver....I just think it wold serve us better to rotate Babin/Peek/Kalu at that WDE spot....I think Weaver could get pressure up the middle, and if he gained a little more weight he wouldn't get pushed around as much...By us having Mario and Weaver on the field at the same time, it really takes away from our explosiveness...our speed...our quickness.....And since we have that Big run Stuffing DT now I think he could cover some of Weavers shortcomings inside....

As much fun as it would be to sign a superstar at every position, that just isnt possible. Gado is an unknown.. but had a great year with Green Bay.. Dayne struggled in New York and looked ok in Denver.

right now i think you look at our defense the first thing we need is to determine if we are running more of a cover 2 4-3 or the traditional 4-3 like what baltimore and carolina run...the reason being with the cover 2 you need smaller faster d-lineman...the more traditional 4-3 (the one i think we should run) you need bigger DT's to keep the MLB clean to make plays...once we figure that out we need a quality starter at DT next to Travis Johnson...all these young UDFA's are not getting it done and seth payne is done

next on defense we need to address our db's...d-rob needs a stronger guy next to him...faggins isn't the answer either unless he just puts it all together by the end of the season...so we atleast need one quality corner...then i think we need to take a look at our FS position...some people are high on c.c. brown i'm not...i think he's better suited for the SS position and him and earl should duke it out for the starting job

finally we need an impact guy at the linebacker position...ryans is doing a great job...but greenwood isn't doing much and we have to wait and see if wong can be an upgrade over orr

that's the defense for the offense it's simple...we need better o-lineman...not sure what the heck is going on...one season we can run block but not pass block the next we do the opposite...WTH...we need to spencer to keep his weight down while he's rehabing...we need pitts to get more aggressive...and everyone else needs to just flat out play better

WR and TE's are doing fine

RB's i think it's obvoius we're lacking on talent...i personally would like to see us try chris taylor and sign lee suggs of the street and see if he can't do something

as for Carr...i've been really impressed with his progress this year...i think he had a mental lapse in the 3rd quarter against dallas but hey everyone is going to have a bad game now and then...i want to see how he bounces back against jacksonville

well there's my 2 cents...haha...more like 20 bucks and some change

I think we should use the first couple of picks for DB and OLB,after that i would go for OL/DL and a punter. I believe we need to build up the D faster than the Offense. Don't get me wrong I know our offense needs to improve, but without a stout defense our offense will not help. I said this earlier this year that in 2007 draft we need to look at Paul Puslusny( OLB )
Penn St. He had knee ending surgery last year, but looks ok this year, not like he was but they say it takes a good year to trust the knee after a surgery. This guy is hard nosed throwback LB.( Butkus style) 6'2 238,can really lay some lumber, would be great next to DWreck!!! As far as DB, I would have to agree with most of the other posters here in saying, Landry, Merriweather, or Griffin.:lightbulb:

I'm dissapointed at Winston. We have two Tackles injured and Brad Bedell (a lifetime Guard) is a better option than Winston when Weigert (another G playing T btw) goes down. Chester Pitts could resolve RT and we could work on getting a better center as Guards and Centers are easier to find than tackles...donno what this team is thinking though. They are confusing as hell.

pitts in the offseason sounded really good at the RT spot to me and some fans but im sure the coaches are trying to keep him at guard.

its interesting to see the way the coaching staff makes their decisions though. we are told that mario williams should be moved around since he is versatile and can cause problems/mismatches instead of keeping him at one spot to master it. yet on the other side of the ball (in a time of need i would argue) they have decided to keep pitts at LG instead of at a tackle position (i think he can play both well if given the opportunity). plus we would be able to resolve the issue of rotating weary into the offense.

i said in preseason that winston would take over at RT but im not sure what is holding him back at this point. i really hope its not his finger that he injured during the cowgirls game.

I wouldn't think it was his finger. He kept playing Sunday with it injured. I don't know what the deal is with him. Maybe the coaches see something wrong with mechanics watching the film or something. I don't mind them taking thier time with him, just as long as he's ready for next season.:redtowel: I know this season isn't over, but going into next season, I would hope our starting line is solidified.

My thoughts for draft 07 (at least for this specific moment. I reserve the right to flip or change my mind at a moment's notice.

round 1 Best corner or left OT avail. Trade down definitely possible to get player. Even if Spencer is 100%, it is obvious we should improve depth.
round 2. The opposite of what selected @#1. Or RB if better avail.
round 3. RB if not @ #2 I simply do not care what RBs on roster do I want a good player to start or back up if WHOMEVER comes alive next 11 games. Somebody anybody needs to show something soon or go to the end of the lunch line. Running backs have been known to get yards behind bad lines before.
Round 4 Best DT or OLB
Round 4 (from trade down in 1st if done)reverse of prior

I think you have to use the early rounds to improve the secondary... CB preferable. I think we should have grabbed one this year to be honest since the draft was deep in this position. Could have gotten a decent value in the 3rd.

I'd like to see running back, corner, free safety in the first 3 rounds and in whatever order of 3 is appropriate. We should be able to pick up O-linemen in the late rounds, like we've been repeatedly told--although I'm not really talking about LT. If we can't do that with the O-linemen, we're in trouble because this team still needs a lot of new faces.
