T.O. UPDATE

More information is coming out regarding the current status of Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens. ESPN is now airing basic information regarding a report out of Texas that Owens has been hospitalized for undisclosed reasons.

Here's another link regarding the situation. He might have had an adverse reaction to medication that he is taking following last week's surgery.

Again, there's no formal confirmation of any of this.

Taken to the hospital to induce vomiting in a "high profile case"

So either he was poisoned, poisoned himself, or tried to committ suuicide

Police report: Terrell Owens attempted suicide

According to a Dallas police report obtained by News 8, Dallas Cowboys star receiver Terrell Owens attempted suicide Tuesday night. The report says Owens was depressed and reportedly took prescription pain pills. A woman companion states that she observed him putting two pills in his mouth. According to the police narrative, the woman said the prescription of 40 pills was filled on September 18 and—until Tuesday—Owens had taken only five pills. The police report said Owens was asked if he had taken the rest of the prescription; Owens said, "Yes."

Owens was treated at Baylor University Medical Center.

Sheesh, I called this one.

Here's what I think:
Terrell Owens has real, psychological issues. This is not something to laugh at, or poke fun at him for. I seriously think that this "diva" behavior has gone straight to his head. I think he puts on an incredible act in the spotlight while maintaining a high level of insecurity, depression, and anxiety in his personal life.

Was this a real suicide attempt or a cry for attention? Really, with someone like Owens, it could have been either. The sad thing is this will just get him brighter in the spotlight and cause him even more personal trouble than he originally had. I wouldn't be surprised if he tries it again

Well, I don't know how you could blame him really.

If it finally sunk in that the only team in the league that would allow him to play was the Cowboys, I could see why he'd be depressed.

This is ignorant.

If somebody attempts suicide, it means that they are depressed and tired of being depressed. If they try to kill themselves, then that ends the depression.

I'm not necessarily saying that we should. TO makes it easy to hate him.

My point is that when somebody tries to kill themselves, it's not because they're tired of living. It's because they are tired of being depressed.

Clearly you've never known someone with a serious mental illness. There are a lot of people in this world who don't even have the cognitive capacity to really know they are alive. If you ever meet someone with severe schizophrenia, who has extreme paranoia, or someone who truly believes God wants them to kill themselves so they can be together in heaven, then you won't be so harsh about suicide.

I'm not saying TO is seriously mentally ill, but I don't think its fair, the morning after an attempted suicide, to be making fun of someone for something they may need serious help for. There is no good analogy for mental illness, but if you need one, imagine it like a physical disability. You can't order someone who has been paralyzed to walk, and you can't just tell someone with a mental illness to "get over it" or act rationally.

From what I've heard thus far from ESPN and searching around on the net is that his publicist was with him at the house and at the hospital, and that they're friends. Also, most reports seem to indicate that she is the woman who is mentioned in the police report as well who indicated TO was depressed. She told reporters at the hospital that TO was not depressed.

IMO It seems as if she initially was very concerned about TO, enough it seems to contact 911, and when questioned by police answered the questions as TO's friend. When questioned later at the hospital after being confident in TO's recovery she when back to her role as TO's publicist and tried to portray him in a positive light so she might have been less than honest in her answers to the press as opposed to her answers to the police. JMO though but it certainly will be interesting to see what was said in the 911 tape.

I'm not qualified medically to speak of the whys of suicide but I've had a few brushes with people close to me that have attempted and have succeeded in this and it's tragic.

All I can say is I hope he is well, I hope he gets whatever help and assistance he needs to get through whatever it is he's dealing with and that his life is far more important than anything he does professionally. So on a personal level I wish him well.

And hearing of this brings back a memory I have from years ago. I don't remember the guy's name but I think he was an Oiler and I remember he was involved in an auto accident and a friend got tossed thru the window and fell from an overpass. This guy got out of his car, looked down at his friend's body and then got back into the car and I believe he killed himself right there in his car. I am fairly sure drink was involved but it left such a sick feeling in my stomach then.

DALLAS (AP) - Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens today left a Dallas hospital amid reports he was treated for a prescription drug overdose — reports that his publicist is strongly denying.

Owens gave a "thumbs up" to reporters as he departed, but made no comment, as he got into an SUV and was driven away.

The flamboyant Cowboys receiver reportedly tried to kill himself by overdosing on pain medication, even putting two more pills into his mouth after a friend intervened, according to a police report obtained Wednesday.

The report said Owens was asked by rescue workers "if he was attempting to harm himself, at which time (he) stated, 'Yes."'

The Dallas police report said the 32-year-old Owens told his friend "that he was depressed." Details of the police report were first reported by WFAA-TV.

But according to The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Dallas Morning News, Owens' publicist Kim Etheredge has denied reports of an attempted suicide.

Etheredge attributed Owens' statement to rescue workers that he was attempting to harm himself to the fact that Owens was groggy after mixing pain pills with supplements. She also said that Owens did not have his stomach pumped at the hospital and did not vomit.

Police Lt. Rick Watson said during a brief news conference that he could only confirm that paramedics called police to say they were taking Owens to the hospital. He said no more details would come from the police because no laws were broken.

I have worked with individuals with mental disorders and many who have thought, considered, or tried to commit suicide. It is not a subject to make light of. Many of these people are not able to understand the clear ramifications of their decisions, they are simply trying to find a way to end the pain that they have been feeling. When a person is this state, they cannot think logically and typically "have blinders on". It is an unfortunate situation and one where the people that end up suffering are the families and friends. I know. I have seen the families and friends have to come to terms with the death of a loved one. To try and understand what was occuring to make the person want to end the pain.

I speal not just from work related expierence but personal as well. My best friend committed suicide in April 2004.

Hey, I have said in this thread that I respect your opinions on the matter, but just because we are not on the same view as you are, it doesn't make us wrong.

We have our reasons to think the way we do, as you do yours. Clinical reasons, personal reasons, whatever....still, we are not making light of this, as it is a touchy subject, just don't try and give us reasons why we should have a different approach as the rest of you.

Once again, this is a no-story. Terrell is a fine, young man, who would never take his own life away. He's a dedicated player who wants nothing but the best for himself and his fellow teammates. It was simply a case of some extra supplements, which should never have entered his body in the first place.

I don't think he committed suicide. If you popped 30 pills into your body I seriously doubt you would be out of the hospital less than 24 hours later, having a press conference, and working out with the team. I think it was what he said it was, he accidently mixed in the pills with nutritional supplements and it had a bad reaction.

All I know is this organization is taking the right moves to continue our hold as the finest organization in the NFL. If it involves going all in with Terrell, then so be it. This isn't a virus amongst the team, it's simply another case of someone overblowing Terrell's situation into something larger than it already is (hamstring, team discovery, allergic reaction, parcell's dissappeance at signing press-conference)-- Terrell has handled this pressure with great ease thus far.
