The Cowboys had a lousy draft with this happening. He's out and the OL guy is out for the year. Lousy.

Did Houston have a lousy draft in '02 because of Carr's rookie numbers?

I wouldn't say they had a lousy draft quite yet. Injuries can happen to any draft pick at any given time. Besides that ignores the 1st round pick they got from the Bills. They way Buffalo is going it could be a very high pick.

I'd love to know what rookie they drafted that is making an impact this year...the Texans drafted Babin and Robinson and they're both playing. I don't see that with the Cowboys. Jones is out, the offensive lineman is out from USC and who else is there? I'm not up on all that but it seems from my vantage point that they right now are getting nothing out of this draft for the year.

serious, HUGE and all Cowboy fans I'm sorry to hear the bad news. I was really looking forward to tracking his numbers & success. Kinda puts a damper on the Steven Jackson vs. Julius Jones debate. One positive note I got to see a little College ball over the weekend and I really liked that back from Auburn, Cadillac Williams he reminds me alot of Curtis Martin, and I think we all know Parcells loves Martin & that Martin is currently still tearing it up in NY.

I am still wondering why Dallas traded down and passed up the chance to draft one of the other RB's that went before Jones...

I am still wondering why Dallas traded down and passed up the chance to draft one of the other RB's that went before Jones...They got an extra first round pick for this year from the Bills and they probably figured that with the Patriots, Jets, and the Dolphins with Ricky Williams in the division the Bills wont have that great of a record and it might be a really high one...

The extra pick from Buffalo may turn out to be the smartest thing the Cowboys did the entire draft.

Robinson and Babin were both first round draft picks that are filling "need" positions. Does Dallas have any players from that draft that fit this description? Most thought Jones was expected to take over the starting role as a 2nd rounder but then we signed Eddie George. So his (as our other draft picks) role became one of depth.

So if you compare the rest of our draft to yours...

Dallas:

Jacob Rogers - 2nd Round - Back-up RT.
Stephen Peterman - 3rd Round - (When healthy) Back-up OG.
Bruce Thornton - 4th Round - Secondary depth.
Sean Ryan - 5th Round - Cut.
Nathan Jones - 7th Round - Secondary depth.
Patrick Crayton - 7th Round - Listed on WR depth chart but does return duties.
Jacques Reeves - 7th Round - Secondary depth.

Houston:

Glenn Earl - 4th Round - I see he's made 1 tackle so far.
Vontez Duff - 6th Round - Is he even on the team?
Jammal Lord - 6th Round - Is he on the team?
Charlie Anderson - 6th Round - I see he's made 1 tackle so far.
Raheem Orr - 7th Round - Is he on the team?
Sloan Thomas - 7th Round - Practice Squad.
BJ Symons - 7th Round - Practice Squad or cut?

Is our's really so lousy?

I still think many teams had a much better draft than the Cowboys including the Texans. Depth is fine, needed and I understand all that but we'll wait and see how JJ works out. Right now his rookie year is a diaster with the injury and all.

I'll always believe Jimmy Johnson was the best draft day man the Cowboys had. Jerry stinks at it and I'm not real impressed with Bill either. But we'll agree to disagree and I'll leave it at that.

Well if you are looking in the category of continuing declining stats, I guess not:

Eddie George 3.3 ypc
Troy Hambrick 3.5 ypc
Emmitt Smith 3.8 ypc

Each in their current or last year with the Cowboys. Man, with that kind of progress in 4-5 years you might actually manage to get a RB that goes backwards. Explain again to me why it was smart to get rid of Emmitt (because JJ wouldn't offer above vet. minimum) and smart to sign Eddie (for $4 mil)?

$2.2 million ($660,000 base + $1.54 million bonus). But I've already stated my opinion of George coming to Dallas in the other thread (against it).

As for Emmitt, several teams offered him the vet. minimum. Yet he signed with Arizona for a fat contract. Do you think he would've re-signed with Dallas had they offered a bit more than the vet. minimum? I don't. And at that point, it made no sense to re-sign him for anything more.

And we got a 1st round pick. I'll take it.

I've been waiting for you HUGE to say something, all I can say is what took you so long...............exactly! my congrats & what a comeback by the Cowboys. Say what other team came back on those Seahawks late in a game this year..........thats right the Rams with Steven Jackson. Gee there sure are a lot of similarities (2 carries difference, 51 yards and a couple TD'S).

Really I'm happy to see Jones healthy & running well that means there is absolutly no need on the part of the Cowboys to draft a RB, hence one less team the Texans need to worry about if they decide to go that direction 1st or 2nd round.

Its also a positive for Texas with the Cowboys winning again, keep the Tuna on the hook for as long as possible, I can't wait to see if y'all make the playoffs again & who the two # 1 draft picks will be. Any ideas?

Strange you would say that about the Cowboys not picking a RB with one of their 2 choices.

I was just reading an article yesterday and Stephen Jones said they will pick the "best player available" no matter what position he plays which means it could very well be a running back. He could be blowing smoke...because I'd go defense for sure if I were them.

I'm not so sure the Texans are thinking RB. I guess it depends on how DD does the rest of the year.

tongue & cheek

its simply an ongoing response to HUGE (whom I respect by the way) refrencing our little battle @ the beginning of the season between Jones & Steven Jackson. It was shelved out of due consideration for Jones unfortunate injury, now that he's healthy we (HUGE & beerlover) can continue comparisons :heh:

i was caught prematurely calling out the HUGE TUNA a mistake by passing on Steven Jackson & that the Cowboys would need to use that extra 1st pick to select a REAL RB. But now looks like I was wrong, beer all over my face :hairpull: Dallas with two #1's & Julius Jones can focus on other needs besides RB. It takes a big beerlover to admit the error of his ways, however I still haven't changed my opinion of Steven Jackson, just my opinion of Jones

I'll repeat what I've said in previous posts: I believe Steven Jackson is a better RB. But I'd rather have Julius Jones and his production (even if it is a little lower than Jackson's) plus an extra first round pick.

My comparison wasn't pointing out that Jones has outperformed Jackson. Just that he has shown he can be as productive.

What took me so long? Oh, I don't know...maybe Jones missing out on 7 weeks of action with a broken shoulder?

As far as the similarities...again what would you rather have: Jones' numbers plus an extra first rounder or Jackson's numbers?

Really I'm happy to see Jones healthy & running well that means there is absolutly no need on the part of the Cowboys to draft a RB, hence one less team the Texans need to worry about if they decide to go that direction 1st or 2nd round.

I'm with WWJD. I can't see the Texans taking another RB. You've got a high 2nd rounder invested in Hollings and another RB that could just be suffering a sophmore slump.

I'll also agree with WWJD's perception that Steven Jones is blowing smoke about taking the "best available player". Since when has Dallas done that in a draft under Jerry Jones? He has consistently NOT taken the best available player or traded out of the spot. So because of their irrational ways, it's hard to form an idea of what they'll do.

We need a CB in the worst way but I don't think we'll finish high enough to take Rolle. But Marlin Jackson would be a nice consolation prize. If both picks are mid-first, use picks on both. Say a CB (Jackson because Rolle is sure to be gone) and a DE (Erasmus James?) or DT (Anttaj Hawthorne?).

If us or Buffalo tank the rest of the season and one of them becomes a pretty high pick, I wouldn't mind trading it and moving down (but not out of the first round).

WWJD
12-08-2004, 01:32 PM
I wish Rolle would be available for the Cowboys but he won't be.

I'm wondering about a WR or LB. This Cooper kid off the practice squad seems to be playing well. Maybe he can be the 3rd receiver they need or pick up a FA. Of course Glenn should be back and he was having a wonderful year till he got hurt. I think that hurt Vinny alot when he went out.

Witten is also becoming a good "go to " guy. The guy has quietly become a quality TE.

If you are Dallas you go defense and heavy. They need a tackle and they need a fast, quick LB. The corners are horrible too although at this point I have more faith in Frazier than Newman who seems to be lost this year.

It's taken Cowboys rookie RB Julius Jones four NFL games to match several accomplishments that Emmitt Smith needed 13 years to pile up.

Jones in one month has as many games with 198 or more rushing yards as Smith had in 13 years in Dallas. Jones also has as many two-game spans with 345 or more yards in one month as Smith had in 218 games with the Cowboys. In Smith's first 5 1/2 years in the NFL, he had consecutive 150-yard games once. Two starts into his career, Jones already has consecutive 150-yard games.

Four games into his career, Smith had 104 rushing yards and one touchdown. Four games into his career, Jones has 445 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Jones has more yards in his last three games (429) than Eddie George has in 12 games this season (424).One word: Wow.

No offense (and I definitely believe a strong OL contributes to a RB) but this is one of the great cop-out/myths of folks that don't want to give Smith his due. Yes he had a good OL, but a great RB makes his OL look like a dominant OL as well by making the most out of it. Part of how you can tell it wasn't all the OL is that 2/3rds of Emmitt's yards were made after 1st contact. The OL wasn't just opening gigantic holes for some no talent hack. They opened a hole that gave a great back an opportunity to demonstrate why he was great--an ability to minimize contact, make a cut, run through arm-tackles and maintain balance for maximum yards. OK rant over.

I think both Flozell Adams and Larry Allen are quality O linemen. Penalty prone , particularly Adams but quality. Some of the holes JJ had to run thru on MNF were huge.

He does remind me of Curtis Martin. Hope he can have a great career like Curtis. JJ sure is quick.

lol, I hope he doesn't get too quick. Madden was saying on the MNF game that the O-line really needs to open holes fast for Jones. Hopefully it won't become a problem later on. I doubt it though.
