View Full Version : SO.. what is wrong with us?

Now.. it is true that turnovers are losing the game for us on offense.. but what is wrong with our defense?

is this new coverage rule making that big a difference? why are we incapable of stopping anyone? our defense wasnt this bad in year 1 and we have a better lineup than we did that year.

Carr is tossing up good numbers but honestly he isnt going to be able to do that against a defensive minded team.

for christ sake we were in a defensive battle during the first half.. WITH DETROIT!! Detroit is not HALF as good defensively as other teams... and we were going toe to toe with them like they were the baltimore ravens or something.

Im honestly disgusted.. as far as we have come.. as much heart as we have shown the last 2 seasons.. how hard we have worked to make an impact and when it looks like everything is finally coming together.. we are playing worse than we ever have.. NO heart.. NO drive.

We are now 0 and 2 and about to start a stretch of difficult games.. if the chargers and the lions offense puts up this many points against us.. what is KC going to do to us? And as bad as KCs defense is.. I wouldnt put them that much worse than SDs and Detroits.. if they are even worse at all.

Who is coming out in next years draft? if we play this way the rest of the season.. we are gonna have that #1 pick.

oh, and I find the whole "fire palmer", "Fire capers", "fire casserly" posts as lame as the next guy.. but I really think we should consider doing something different in the defensive and offensive departments.

Fangio isnt cutting it so far.. we run a 3-4.. and the whole point of a 3-4 is to be quick and aggressive and we are NOT doing it. We are a defensive and run minded team.. and we have a defense than cant stop a TE or a rookie RB behind a shoddy line.. and a running back that fumbles twice a game and still gets 30+ carries.

Also we have 4 good recievers.. 4 guys that can make a difference and we are lucky if we get to each guy once. That is NOT right. Your running back is getting stuffed.. hes fumbling the ball.. hes tired.. GIVE IT TO YOUR SLEW OF VERY TALENTED RECEIVERS!. We didnt score a touchdown till we started throwing downfield.. WAKE UP CALL!!!!!

I would NOT be disappointed if we got us a different defensive coordinator.. and I definatly wouldnt be disappointed if we got an offensive coordinator who wasnt quite as interested in controlling the clock. I know thats how Capers likes to run his offense.. but ya know what.. we have playmakers that we are not getting 100% out of.. Capers either needs to change his view on things, or someone needs to change his view for him (*cough*mcnair*cough*)

Let capers focus on that defense.. get us some damn turnovers, get us some damn sacks, get us some damn 3rd and outs.. get us SOMETHING besides an endless stream of 3rd down completions by the freaking DETROIT LIONS AND SAN DIEGO CHARGERS.

Let someone else focus on our offense.. someone who will let our QB.. who has one of the strongest arms in the league and is pinpoint accurate.. throw the ball. Someone who will let us spread that ball around to Johnson, Bradford, Gaffney, Armstrong, and if none of them are open THEN toss it to DD. Yah its really great when you can toss it to DD and get a first down.. but its even better when you can toss it to Johnson and get 40 yards or a touchdown!

Ive never beleived all this "we are too conservative" bunk.. I always figured that when we had the tools to really open up the playbook.. we would do it. Well I was dead wrong.. we need people with cajones on our coaching staff. We are the damn houston texans.. we arent a freakin yankee team.. I dont WANT a team that isnt gonna play smashmouth football and lay it all on the line to get that W.

0 and freakin 2. just cut your damn hair Carr.

How many draft picks yall think miami would give us for Davis?

can ya tell im not happy :P.

One major thing we lack is the go for the kill attittude. This comes from the coaches, theyre attitude is, "Lets avoid getting killed." They play not to lose instaed of playing to win. I said in another thread, we have a secon rate coaching staff here. We hired them because nobody else would.

3rd down conversions against us is killing us. The got a 3rd and 10 ,3rd and 11, and a 3rd and 7 against our defense.. amazing.

I can't complain about the playcalling. I guess the announcers said it best. Capers likes to keep the 3rd downs 5 yards or less, so I guess why we see runs on 2nd and 7 alot, but that may be the plays that I only notice. we may pass on 2nd down more than I realize.. I haven't looked at the stats

That's the key, we can't stop them on 3rd down, even 3rd and long. We are
not getting significant pressure on the QB, from the inside rush or off the edge, we aren't getting the pressure. Carr played played pretty good today, especially in the second half. Even if we eliminate the turnovers, we've got
to hold them on long 3rd down. The D did good early, but later in the game
when it really mattered, didn't get it done.

I am willing to suggest that there are some coaches availible who look at the tools the Texans have and are saying "I can make this work" kinda like the Marvin Lewis situation. Capers and company have the tools. Its just a matter of how they use them.

Two weeks in a row we limit leading rushers to 3.1 per carry, two weeks in a row we allow only 2 touchdowns (16 points, again), two weeks in a row we force three turnovers (now at +5 for the season), and we still have a bad defense? I disagree. Bly will be back, Boss will be back, and the D will continue to play well.

Offensively, I was very pleased in with the second half.

Ill admit you have a very good D-line. However if we had a O-coordinator with anything between his legs, your secondary would have been exposed more than it was.

True, it was a little shaky but Dre Bly will be back as early as next week, so I'm much less worried about it. It was Chris Cash and Bracy Walker that got burned, not Bryant or Bly. But I will agree that we definitely need to draft SS high next year. Our safety corps average age 32, with the exception of Holt who is second year.

Did anyone see that half time piece they had with Coach Fox with the Panther's? They were talking about how they use computers to track stats, etc, even how the coache's are going to coach. I thought it was very interesting and would like to know more about it. They have Caper's pegged big time. I believe Mariuchi (sp) knew what Capers was going to call before Capers did. We have one of the most predictable coaches in the NFL.

And I say that is still a bunch of bunk for endless reasons. Just for starters over aggressiveness on Walkers part caused an interception to be nullified. When we blitz we get burned. Blitzing is an aggressive move. Taking chances will burn you as much as being passive. What is needed is maturation. Texans are a young team and boy did they look it today. I am always amazed at someone blaming a coach when its the multimillion dollar stars on the field that have to make the plays.

I personally expect more from the defense. We supposively "upgraded" in the FA and draft and for some reason, I am not seeing it. Maybe my expectations were too high and I need to let the 4 new starters and 2 injured starters (of last year) get into a groove.

On a side note. Our "youngsters" (offensive side) have to quit giving the ball away so our defense isn't on the field so much.

It kills me that in the 4th quarter, we allow SD to run out the clock and this week we give up a 7 minute drive for a TD in the 4th quarter.

good game Detroit, you did what you had to do

My post was not referring solely to play calling, it directed more towards thier philosophy. Yea there are always penalties, and blitzs get burned at times. What I mean is when your defense holds DET to 7 points in the 1st half, and all we do is run instead of testing the deep ball and trying to mount a lead while thier offense was struggling. They didn't try anything deep until there was no other choice. When we did play long it worked fine, and could have given us a 1st half lead. But our coaches are to worried about keeping it close, and it hurts us more than it helps.

Our coaching and offensive calls leave something to be desired. We have lots of talent out there but Capers and cronies aren't coming through like champs. In fact, they are more like chumps. Can we get some Super Glue for Davis?

Does how they use them include fumbles, stupid mistakes and penalties? Do you think that Capers has forgot to mention HOLD ONTO THE FOOTBALL? Or DON'T HIT THE QB IN THE HEAD. Or perhaps Capers failed to mention DONT GRAB THE FACEMASK or DONT JUMP OFFSIDES. When is it that you hold the players accountable?? Or maybe we need a new coach because they wont listen to him. How sad would that be? All the things mentioned above are coached in pewee league. Not to mention they make millions to do what they do.

Coaches do call out the offensive plays and defensive alignments. You know that right....?

Uh yea I think so. You do know it is the players that run the plays right??

Grid- You can think what you want, but I've been here all week trying to tell you Detroits D wasn't something to be taken lightly. Go ahead and beat yourself up, but think to yourself, Detroit beat a Bear team that held GB to 10 points and scored 21 against GB. Maybe Detroit is better than you thought?

one thing I am suprised about with the offense. With the new rules reguarding DB's, I am suprised Carr isn't trying to throw the deep ball a few times more a game.
But again, I con't see the defensive alignment

Maybe they are, but throwing out stats from ONE GAME that was played LAST YEAR is no way to prove it.

Some coaches are working with computers while Capers is making out his grocery list on the sideline for the drive home...milk, bread, Sports Illustrated...

cappers is capable but hardly palatable, but I give him credit for maintaining his composure, he stays positive and doesn't get in the players faces (may be neccesarry at some point) and seems to stay with the game plan (however faulty) we are just going to have to exercise patience and stay behind the team for better or worse for the interm

Question. With time running out in the 4th qtr and down by 2 touchdowns,
how many NFL teams would be running the ball up the middle? Also, it
was nice to see the Lions 'playing to win' by scoring that last TD-- what
do you think the Texans would have done in that situation? And, finally,
was Williams catching TDs while double covered ( like Moss, TO, etc.)?
...thought Texans don't do it because it is a no-no (NOT)!

Good point...I thought we were trying to run the clock out for some reason. Also, why go for a 2 point conversion with so much time left?

No the lions arent better than I thought they were.. cause I thought they were about on par with us.. with the Lions having the POTENTIAL to be the better offensive.. and us having the veteran defense.

Unfortunatly yall have something we dont.. I dont know if its coaching, or heart, or what.. but yall looked like we looked the last two seasons.

The good news is we no longer look like an expansion team! the bad news is that instead of coming into the league looking like the Patriots, we came into it looking like the Cardinals. We look like a team used to losing :P.

Well, I was trying to put it into perspective for you to make you feel better, but go ahead and think the Lions and Texans are even, even though the final tally wasn't even within 1 score. My point was that the Lions are better than you are giving them credit for and that means the Texans lost to a solid (not great by any means) team, thus, the Texans aren't as bad as you are thinking they are.

Well, if we win next week, we will be 1-2, the same record we had last year at 3 weeks. We did win our first game against Miami and were underdogs. There are alot of games left to be played. The lions play well at home as we usually do. Now its off to Kansas!

What is wrong with us?

As everybody knows, Davis had 36 touches. AJ had 4. Bradford had 3.

A lot of things were wrong, but the play selection was poor, and we didn't pick on their secondary, and Davis coughed the ball up. Not rocket science (does 'Houston, we have a problem' ring a bell?)

I'm just afraid that with mistakes like that, plus the penalties, the guys are going to start having head problems. 'I'm myself for this team, he's getting playing time', etc. Afraid they're going to start playing the blame game (like the guys on this board) rather than playing ball.

If DD holds onto the ball today, it's a totally different game. If Carr doesn't throw the INT. If we stop Drummond on a kickoff return. If we don't commit penalties everytime something good happens.

If we perform the basics.

I have consistantly defended the offensive playcalling for 2 years and one game. However, I'm done doing that! The Lions had 8 men in the box, mediocre corners who were biting on first moves and the Texans refused to take a shot downfield until the third quarter. Furthermore, they refused to throw at all until third down. It was a disgusting display. I couldn't tell if Carr was off in the first half or if the offensive was just so freakin' predictable that the Lions knew exactly where to be. EVERY SINGLE TIME the Texans went downfield with the ball, they had a man open- most of the passes were completed (Gaffney for 25, Bradford TD, AJ TD, and the AJ catch at the end of the game when the referee robbed him).

Whether Palmer or Capers is responsible for this ultra conservative and extremely predictable playcalling, it needs to be corrected next week.

It is killing me that we cannot stop a team with 3rd & 14 , They are eating us up. Where is our coverage..

What is up with Marcus Coleman you move to SS and you cant tackle anymore? I saw several plays the he tried to tackle like Matt Stevens, HEY LETS ask Matt how his tackling worked for him, oh wait no longer here...

I understand that Capers wants to establish the run but come one when it is 2 and 13 why not play action and dump it off to a te or those 3 stud WR's we have oh wait my mistake 4 wr's.... Everytime we ran DD was running for his life with DT's in the back field, but i guess thats not too hard when they know 1 and 2nd down it will be a run... ....

It is amazing when we had to pass we did and moved it down the field.. Their was too much pressure put on DD to have a running game. I think Capers needs to look for another O coordinator, Palmer is soft and weak without a killer instact. It is obvious with the play calling. I jsut dont understand we have 4 really good Wr's why not make them work and I dont want the Texans to wear out DD like the Oilers did with Earl....

I did see some really good play. Babin seemed to be everywhere and that is super, I didnt see the lions test our rookie CB much either.

I know one thing the TEXANS better start winning or I will have to buy season tickets again next yr..........

A possible silver lining in all this is now, finally, the coaching staff will get it through their thick heads they need to throw downfield more. With Davis fumbling so much, Dom is sure to want to react in some way. If he reacts by getting Davis less touches and throwing the ball downfield more, that will be great and is what we should have been doing anyway.
