2002, Part II
by Jimmy Mohr

The help wanted signs have been put into storage at 1 Reliant Park. With a revamped roster finally set, a new coaching staff settled in, and a front office devoid of a GM with a 70ís hairdo, the dismal 2005 season is a distant memory. The Kubiak/Smith era has officially commenced, and their first test comes this Sunday when the Texans host the Philadelphia Eagles in the season and home opener.

Of the 53 players on the Texans roster, nearly half are new to the franchise. Scattered amongst the new faces are five rookies that cracked the starting lineup, a group that features defensive lineman Mario Williams, the surprise number one pick of last yearís draft. Another shocker on the rookie front is the emergence of RB Wali Lundy, a 6th round selection from Virginia. Lundy entered camp with hopes of making the final roster, but with Domanick Davis out for the year, he finds himself atop the depth chart. Kubiak has also given rookies TE Owen Daniels, MLB DeMeco Ryans, and LT Charles Spencer the starting nod.

The Texans offense canít get much worse than last year when they ranked 30th in the league. That being said, the key to the success of the offense this year will rest on the shoulders of QB David Carr. Carr has struggled in his first four years since coming to Houston, and his window of opportunity is shrinking. In Coach Kubes, Carr has one of the best and most respected QB teachers. If he fails in 2006, his days in H-town will certainly be numbered if not out of numbers.
