Hi Texans Fans, just checking in from work here in western NY.

Looks like you guys are winning, good. I like your team.

I didn't see Moulds with any receptions on NFL.com stats.
Is he hurt, not playing or not playing well?????

He was in 1st half. No catches his way, Rams were on the serious blitz / pressure so he did more his part of keeping th edouble team off AJ.

edit... and Sarg beat me to it.

Kind of hard to evaluate QB's tonite. Sounds like the playbook was limited for Carr from what Moulds was saying on a quick interview with Field Pass. And Sage is really sounding good but against 2nd and 3rd teams. Just wish I could be SEEING what's going on. <sigh>

You know, Moulds in his sideline interview says that the Texans weren't expecting that much blitzing.

What?!?

How could you not expect that after the Ram-Colts game? If I know this, they had to know that.

But Lundy was 6th round, so not much CB there. I think Dee Webb might have been available.

Looks like your vying for scouting position for the Texans, I agree though, after last weekend you have to know that they were gonna be coming.

That was my thought ... our offensive playcalling the first quarter was mostly horrible. Wasn't very high on a lot of our defensive playcalling series either. Too much soft coverage, not enough pass rush.

hence why i'm guessin/askin, the had to have been or were scripted for a series or two. i know shanny does that alot in denver, even in the regular season, then adjusts accordingly for the rest of the game. perhaps that something Kubes' is doing as well?

Please!

Of course. I'm not trying to make anything more out of it or imply greater significance than need be. But I play to win preseason games too, and I'm just not fond of these soft plays. Call it experimentation, call it an idea that just didn't work, but I just don't like it. I think we need to err on the side of calculated aggression.

Never mind ... bend but don't break, again. We pulled it out. Great heart, third team.

Just saying.

I haven't seen the aggression I expected out of Richard Smith. Two preseason games, yes it's early, yes they're experimenting with plays and personnel.

All of that duly noted.

I am simply stating I would like to see more aggression and pressure in passing plays -- especially given our weak secondary.

I'm not really trying to predict anything or condemn anybody at this point, so don't make anything too much out of it.

And yes ... 2-0 feels pretty friggin good from where I'm sitting.

While I wasn't able to watch the game, it appears that there are plenty of things to be optomistic about. Some moments of really good play by the defense. Morency looks like a guy who can be the starter in this system. And after stumbling at the beginning, it sounded like Carr & the O-line got it together a little toward the end of the second half.

All that said....don't overblow this thing. It is still the pre-season and the Rams are not a very good football team. Being two and oh is great, but we'll know heck of a lot more when the Eagles come to town. There are plenty of things that are cause for concern.

I'm just hoping for more progress in the last two games and then we'll see what we really have when Philly comes to town.

Man oh Man

Rookie QB starting in pre-season and you have drawn a career long conclusion. Comical. It takes D lineman and QB's longer to develope than a RB. The truth won't be known for 3yrs. As for you previous post stating that no team goes in pre-season without 1's already assigned..The more veteran the team the more solidified the positions there. The Texans have never had a winning season, they hardly qualify as a team with positon locks. Kubiak said himself that all positions would be earned not given. Its just hard to demote the QB without causing distraction among the whole team. QB's are the leaders so when they lose the 1 its a big deal. The list of players that have lost the 1 from last year is long. What i find funny is that even when Sage does well you find a negative in it? Try to look at things objectively. I like Carr too, he obviously has more athleticism. But Sage seems cooler in the pocket and throws with more touch. I hope Carr gets it down, butits good to know we can be competitive with the 2.

I felt that the O-line had no problems at all in the first half. The problems came in that Lundy cannot pick up a blitz at all. Thats where the pressure was coming from. If he picks up those blocks I think we would have had no sacks again.

Didn't see the game, only heard parts and saw the highlights on the NFL Network, so I wasn't sure where the breakdown came from. I only saw the results in the box score of Carr being sacked and the overturned fumble call.

Well there was more going on than just that. Moulds said they didnt expect so many blitzes in the 1st Quarter of a pre-season game. And DD has the same problem with LBers. Carr isnt the most sacked QB in the league for nothing.

Thank you, I'm not saying Young will never succeed, it's just at this point and time, Mario is making more of a difference on this team than Young would have, as of right now. We would have used our #1 pick on a guy that is going to take 1-2 years to develop, which in all honesty it could take Mario that long to develop as well, but Mario is making progress and starting to make things happen here and there, whether it be directly him or opening things up for the other guys.

For the most part, he's had a heck of a game. I think it's kinda funny GK makin him play the whole game though.

Like Jerek, I think he's screwing us for not picking up the extra 4 or 5 yards on that punt return........ yeah, I'm gready, and it is the preseason. but if he's doing that in the regular season.... I'll be miffed.

then on third and one, where he did everything right, except turn his head...... ..... Man..... surely you can understand someone being upset at that.

Overall, he's had a great game.......

You know, Moulds in his sideline interview says that the Texans weren't expecting that much blitzing.

What?!?

How could you not expect that after the Ram-Colts game? If I know this, they had to know that.

It's the second game of the preseason..... nobody wants to hurt their main man in the second preseason game... it should be common curtesy(sp) not to blitz every other play. every now and again, sure, but not like they are. How often are we sending a blitz?? not very much.

But it is a big surprise that so many teams are blitzing, last week especially.

have they really tried to run?

They haven't really committed to running the ball...... I'm thinking it's because we shut down Stephen Jackson & their 1st team offense.

PB is getting beat like a Circus monkey, but Robinson seems like our only solid CB. =/ I really thought we were better then that in the secondary.

I disagree..... I think PBuch is being picked on, but he's stepped up to the call well. If he'd have turned his head on that PI call, no one could say Dunta outplayed him..... Dunta has been getting beat often..... not as badly as McLeon, but he hasn't been right there, to make the plays like PBuch.

ok sorry im barely posting, i just got back to CC from htown and i would have posted after the game...o well.

things i liked:

-vernand morency. need i say more?
-pbuc when he wasnt committing pass interference.
-d-line play. everyone, especially peek and mario. everyone played great
-morlon greenwood.
-the agressive hits by greenwood on bulger and glenn earl on whoever he hit.

dislikes:

carr's performance...very inefficient and just below average all together. sage rosenfels had no problem getting rid of the football. at times, carr had enough protection, but hesitated to get the ball out. he takes WAAY too long making reads. he is also looked extremely tense. he had excessive body movements, happy feet, and didnt seem focused on finding recievers, but rather, finding the blitzers. rosenfels looked poise, confident, and overall, pretty darn good. now im not going to feed into the "qb controversy". i still think carr is the man, but i liked what i saw from sage more than what i saw in carr.

other dislikes: dexter mccleon....a few times. he was giving too much slack to the recievers like kevin curtis and that mcdonald guy.

I finally saw the game.

I like how aggressively the defense played. It looked like they were really hitting people hard! They really do swarm to the ball too.

Morency looked really, really good like everyone said. He, Lundy, and Davis when he is healthy will be tearing it up this season!

I am too excited about the positives to talk about Carr's first quarter.

dalemurphy
08-20-2006, 11:54 PM
Carr went 10-17 for 100 yards, no interceptions and 10 points in the first half. The previous regime would've been praising him. Kubiak was critical of his play. I'm absolutely thrilled! Carr will either improve or he will be benched by a QB that seems to be very compitent. I think he will improve and have a very good season. Regardless, we are going to have the best QB play in our 5 year existence this year and a good to dominate run game.

It's going to be a fun season!!!

I like david carr, I usually support him, I think he will be a good maybe even great qb some time soon. having said that, he looks so gun shy it scares me, maybe he's scared, maybe he's thinking too much, but several others have said it about sage, poise...carr needs that poise and he needs to be able on 3rd and 3 to drop back, identify the blitz and throw the ball quickly. once he decides to throw the ball he has one of the best releases in the league and one of the best arms. someone please teach that guy some poise!

Morency - 5'9" 212 so he is a bit thicker than Davis was, but pretty close to the same type of back when it comes to size and stature.

Isn't Lundy 5'-11", 214?

If we go to the same source (the Texans) for all three, the sizes are very similar:

Domanick Davis 5' 9" 216 lbs--SI is smoking something if they think DD is 5' 11"
Vernand Morency 5' 9" 212 lbs
Walli Lundy 5' 10" 214 lbs.

One thing which has always stuck out imo is DD has short legs for his height.

I'm not sure how accurate any published weights are right now. Some of the o-lineman are off by 15 or more pounds. However, this group is probably changing their weight more than players at other positions as they follow their slim down and get fast regimen.

Yes you can, what do you think the this game was about? Hardly any rollouts and scrambles. They were sending a message to Carr "Trust your O-line", I think he got the point after his second series.

no, that ain't it..... you don't tell a QB to trust his OLine, when they are allowing people to tee off on him....... That QB definitely ain't learning to trust the OLine, and he defienitely isn't working on his "poise"

Unless you are saying he is rushing his throws, and giving up on plays too early.

you can tell him that but comeon i hardly think he would listen. its different being on the sideline with the headset as opposed to being on the field where, in the past 4 seasons, u live on the turf like david has. its traumatizing. when u get put on ur arse roughly half the time, its easy to not listen to ur coach tell you to trust an o-line that hasnt had enough time to prove that they are worthy to be trusted. ill give carr a little bit of time. his comfort behind the o-line will get better with time. he needs more snaps and the o-line needs to step up before carr can believe in them. poise is something u gain by adaptation. kubiak has no clue what it feels like to be put down to the turf on a regular basis. by the start of the regular season to around week 2 or 3, we will see a poise carr. i remember in 2004 how jittery carr was...especially in week 2 vs detroit. immediately after week 2, carr was staying in the pocket spreading the ball aound and using his wide recievers. it wont take long before we will see that again. :redtowel:

Everyone is just going to see and say whatever they want to about Carr so I don't even know why I said anything.

I'm just saying how are you going to tell him to trust his OL, when he has a DLineman dragging him down, or a Corner pouncing off his sternum?? David isn't imagining those things. they happened.

if anything the coach is teaching him to get rid of the ball. Teams are less likely to blitz on 1st & 2nd down if all they are going to get is a loss of down... Give them a loss of Down & 7 yards, they'll come every time.

McCleon is giving cant cover

it didnt matter who he was covering, curtis or mcdonald, he was flat out owned.

nice FG block on the other hand. notice how the ball was not thrown in dunta's direction? the league is beginning to respect his ability.

Even though they blitzed alot the O-line was doing a pretty good job of protecting Carr, the more he gets used to it, the more "poised" he will be in the pocket. A preseason game would be the best time to throw him to the blitzing wolves and make him trust his O-line to keep him safe. In the regular season (and probably the rest of pre-season) he'll have the Bootleg back, but I'm pretty sure the coaches would like him to feel comfortable in the pocket so opposing teams don't constantly blitz the rollout option like saturday.

True, true. The question is, how long is that going to take? Hopefully sooner than later.

I never said it would happen by blinking, but if you don't start the journey you'll never finish it.

Hahaha, I made a cliche!

It's a two way street. I think his linemen will have more confidence in him when he proves he won't pull the ball down and run too soon when under pressure. I'm sure they would like to see him move around in the pocket to help them out when one lineman has a problem and make a play without perfect protection. I'm assuming that last year's full jail break rushes where the whole line caves in are extinct, or at least endangered.

Agreed. I think that goes into the whole learning to trust your O-line department I was talking about.

I'm assuming the line is better by seeing the TE in pass routes rather than blocking all the time. Having a FB that could block would help as well.:redtowel:

Okay, the "specific" game thread has turned into a "general" QB thread (which we have very few of, I know). Almost 48 hours later... isn't it about time for a...
