Even though RE is not really suited for Mario. I think it will be his most productive spot on the line. With Weaver on the other side and the eventual two DTs that win the starting spot, it will let Mario "roam".

We sacrifice pass rushing on first and 2nd downs and kinda put the whole pressure on Mario or the blitzing LB to get the sack, but its alot more consistent.

u won't see weaver getting blown up inside, peek overpursuing on running plays, etc.

with that lineup, it will be very tough to run up on us. It really depends on how weaver can defend the naked boot.

The Texans are changing their starting defensive line for the second preseason game at St. Louis.

End Mario Williams is moving from the strong to the weak side. Tackle Anthony Weaver is moving to strong-side end, the position he played at Baltimore. Robaire Smith and Travis Johnson will start at tackle.

Thanks for the link GK, glad somebody found the source for Jokers
thread.
I love it, because you're 2 best DL atheletes should be on the edge and its
fine with me if Kubiak leaves these guys at end on 3rd downs if he choose:
Babin and Peek are expendible just like everybody else.
With Mario on the weakside, there will be no TE help and Mario
should be a handfull to handle for the tackle by himself.

This is a chance for TJ to show what he can do playing first string against first stringers, and a chance to see Mario and Weaver on the ends. The depth chart hasn't changed.

We have coaches who try different things to check their own work!

With Mario moving over to the weakside for the St. Louie game Saturday,
it would have given him the chance to go head on, one-on-one agaisnt OP for a whole bunch of snaps. But apparently Pace got banged up in practice this week and he may not even play Saturday ?.

Seth Payne is a known quantity and nobody should be concerned about Seth going anywhere. He's going to be the first guy off the bench and playing in a rotation like this is going to help extend his career a great deal. If TJ plays the way he should be capable of and Robaire Smith does the same thing then when Seth comes in to spell one of them we should see zero dropoff.

I was thinking (and hoping) for Williams on the weakside, too. I look forward to seeing how this plays out, even in a pre-season game. I'd hope this idea of Weaver on the stongside and Mario on the other end sticks. It makes sense to me.

And of course that's exactly what the Texans signed him up for after Kubiak
came in and immediately decided to convert to the 4-3. As you know they
had nobody remotely qualified to play that position at that time.
Right off hand, I don't know if there's another weakside end nearly as big as Mario ? But as you say he's got the speed to play weakside while not being a liability on rushing plays. He's got the potential to rewrite the position. But
that's potential again, we'll see what he does in St. Lous tomorrow.

If this DL of Weaver, Bear, TJ, and Mario plays real well (dominates for example), does anyone think this wouldn't give someone like Malone a better chance of making the team? And, could it be bad news for Babin or Peek to make it? Just a thought. What do y'all think?

I don't think Babin or Peek are in too much danger this year. There are too many unknowns right now; Ithink the coaches will see what develops this year. Also, even if Weaver moves to tackle, I'm not sure TJ is ahead of Payne on the depth chart.

I agree with you Runner. It is still early and GK and his associates are testing and evaluating which line up fits in certain situation. This is preseason and this is a chance for coaches to test their tactics and evaluate players. But I tell you this, I'd seen so many exciting players with protential this year than in the past which really pumped me up. Completely agree with this. Maybe I'm missing something, but when I watch the DVR of the KC game it looks like Weaver gets pushed around a lot inside. The coaches seem to be singing his praises, but I think he belongs solely at the strongside run-stopping end in the base set 4-3.

Mario sure -could- be a heck of a combo run/pass base package weakside defender. Might get less doubles out there too.

I did read that. Call me crazy, but I hear the voices too.

It's a good way to handle it, really...

I mean what the heck are they going to say to the guy - he came here to play end. They asked him to switch because they drafted Mario and he did it with what sounds like minimal complaint... and now he's not great at a position he didn't sign up for..........

It's good to see that Kubiak & co. recognize it at least... I have to think we would have been in week 10 before Capers caught on that he wasn't holding up at the point of attack...

Despite the rhetoric, I think the move to end is a done deal.

Right now I'm thinking that Weaver can play 4-3 DE at a credible level full time but I have my doubts about Peek and Babin doing the same. It's early but Babin and Peek look like, well...tweeners. Tweeners are not really linebackers, and not really NFL quality DE's....at least not fully rounded NFL starter quality DE's.

Weaver/Williams would give us two legit starters at the ends. The DT's are a mess since TJ has underachieved in camp so far, and Robaire Smith has never played up to his contract...and probably never will.

I think he's worried about the run after KC (legitimately in my book), and trying to make adjustments. I've heard him mention Peek's run-stopping deficiencies several times in the past week... which is not exactly a surprise.

He mentioned on Thursday that both Mario & Weaver would play inside if needed in the base package - I'm just not sold about that on either guy.

Should be a good opportunity to take a long look at TJ against starting quality lineman. I was disappointed by our first team DLine against the chiefs. They were busting big runs right up the middle through our self-proclaimed strength of the team. Weaver certainly looked overmatched as a DT, hopefully TJ can step in and provide some push inside.

I really think Babin and Peek looked like top notch warriors without the pads in OTAs, but now with the pads it's a different story. I think both have a nitch, but just off the bench. Same as TJ, even though he is starting this week. I like the idea of him alongside one of the ends playing inside on passing downs. Yes having Weaver at the right spot is important, but having a compent RE is the bigger story. Babin is solid off the bench and so is Kalu at LE, then Peek can back up both since he is a little less well rounded.

Have any of our MB reporters mentioned problems with Weaver at tackle during practice?? If not, & Kubiak is motivated by a percieved weekness on the line, don't you think he may be panicking a bit?? I mean we just said 15 plays is to short to make any kind of judgement on Mario......... wouldn't it be the same for Weaver @ tackle??

And what does this say about Dragting Mario for need?? Mario... Kalu...... Weaver..... Babin.... Peek.... Cochran..... we got a bunch of DEs...... and now we are trying to figure out what we are going to do with them.

& While Babin & Peek may be "tweeners", meaning they can play, and play well in a 3-4, or a 4-3(like Dwight Freeney, Jevon Kearse, John Abrahm, etc...) I thought Babin has been playing well since the end of '05 and he looked as good as anyone on our DLine, I thought, against KC. So he's just SOL?? Because Weaver can't play tackle??

I'm sure Kubiak is going to go with what's best for the Texans.... IMO, put Mario on the strong side, Babin on the Weakside, force teams to run up the middle, where they'll see TJ & Weaver.......... TJ & Seth really.

Sorry if I'm ranting, I'm just thinking out loud.

My opinion is that Weaver was going to move around as well and this gives him some work. Also do not discount that we have three DE's (Mario, Peek and Babin) that have not played DE in the NFL and need to see someone who knows how to play it correctly. From reading between the lines, Weaver maybe the best coach for all three of them given the way he has elevated himself as a team leader.

Quote from Kubiak:

"Anthony's played extremely well," Kubiak said. "We'd like to get him outside. We're going to prepare as if he'll play outside. We really need someone to step up at tackle so we can keep him outside."

If Johnson plays well at tackle, Weaver will stay outside. Ends Jason Babin and Antwan Peek will come off the bench, as will tackle Seth Payne.

Ideally, we'll keep nine or 10 linemen on the (53-man) final roster, and we'll play eight of them," Kubiak said. "We've got a talented group. We want to keep them fresh.

"Right now, we're moving them around to see who the four best are."

I have been expecting big things from this guy since he came here. Going back to a 4-3 style defence like the one he played in while at Florida State is going to help his play. TJ was on third string at one point wasn't he? He has moved his way up to starter, let's see what he can do this year. I saw some good things from TJ in the preseason, but I really need to see more from Weaver. If Weaver plays well, our defensive line could be pretty damn good.
