The Houston Texans have placed LB Wali Rainer on the Reserve/Injured list after he suffered a fractured ankle during Sunday morning practice at Texans training camp. To fill Rainer’s spot on the roster, the Texans have signed veteran LB Saleem Rasheed.

Rasheed (6-2, 229), enters his fifth year in the NFL. He was originally drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round of the 2002 draft from the University of Alabama .

Rasheed spent his entire career with the Niners, playing in 45 games, starting five. He has 26 career tackles and one career sack. Texans defensive coordinator Richard Smith was Rasheed’s linebacker coach in 2002.

The Texans also signed CB Kevin Garrett.

Garrett (5-10, 194) hails from Brazoria , Texas . He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the fifth round of the 2003 draft out of Southern Methodist University. He played in 23 career games, starting one for the Rams from 2003-04. He has eight career tackles and four passes defensed. He was most recently with the Kansas City Chiefs.

In order to make room on the roster, the Texans have released C Kelvin Chaisson.

If Richard Smith was Rasheed's LB coach, he should know a ton about the guy.

Hey Kevin Garrett, welcome to the Texans. If you can cover up Andre we might put you on the practice squad...

Beats being Mudders I guess.

I suspect their future on the team depends on who else may come available on the market.

I know the LB in name only, but the kid from SMU I do remember. I was actually high on him as a sleeper type in 2003. If I remember, he was a Chris Mckenzie clone. Doesn't have ideal size, but is fast as a hiccup. Or at least, that's what I remember. Of course, he couldn't have been doing too well or he would not be available.

It seems as though we lose a player everyday. Mathis, Faggins, Lundy, Rainer. DD cant make is through practice without a knee drain. Knock on wood we dont lose anymore players. We have to win games this year. If not I am going to have to get on prozac and a lot of it.

Garrett didn't play in the NFL in '05. Not sure if it was due to an injury or whatever.

I think the madden ratings are fairly accurate. On madden I took miller and trader for putizer and I got flanagan and Moulds. The offense went up to 87 overall. Then I started a season. I also fired capers and hired Kubes. Needless to say we won three championships in a row. :lightbulb:

I'm not trying to dog anyone or anything, I just don't see how someone can take a rating from a video game for a certain player and gauge that player's performance or potential based on the rating. I know research is probably done to get these ratings, but I don't want to see a Madden rating, I want to see what the guy can do on the field.

Sure we can, but I would rather specualte baseed on past performance, however little there may be to go on, than a video game rating, just MO.

My only concern with McLeon and Garrett is that they were both let go by Herm Edwards, however they were Vermeil guys. Which kinds of cancels itself out in an ironic way given the history of Edwards/Vermeil. But, given that two pairs of eyes (Smith/Kubiak) have seen the Chiefs over the last couple of years it at least makes me feel better. Let's face it, these guys are not commanding top tier money and have been recenlty brought in to fill a void at training camp. If they can hang on it is a bonus in my opinion as we will address the secondary next off season.

brief mention from HPF in 2003 regarding the 2003 Senior Bowl
http://www.houstonprofootball.com/draft/2003/senior.html

HPF: What other players created the most buzz?

MG: A few other players of note were Clemson DT Nick Eason, Hawaii LB Pisa Tinoisamoa, Cal QB Kyle Boller, Arizona WR Bobby Wade, Michigan TE Bennie Joppru, Washington State CB Marcus Trufant, Notre Dame CB Shane Walton, USC RB Justin Fargas, North Carolina WR Sam Aiken, Florida State OG Montrae Holland, Georgia OT Jon Stinchcomb, Illinois OT Tony Pashos, and SMU CB Kevin Garrett. All of these players stood out for their superior play all week.

He is a good center who rarely gives up a sack or gets penalized, but after his problems with injury the last two seasons and with his age, I have no idea how he will hold up this season.

Kevin Garret Profile (http://www.kcchiefs.com/player/kevin_garrett/)

He was not technically a Ram in 2005, because he was released PRIOR to the beginning of the season. No mention of why after being released by the Rams, why he didn't play in 2005.

Transactions: Signed a two-year contract with Kansas City (1/11/06) ... Released by St. Louis (9/3/05) ... Signed a three-year contract with St. Louis (7/22/03) ... Entered the league as the third of three fifth-round draft choices (172nd overall) of St. Louis in 2003.

He did started 14 games for the Packers last season. I am keeping my fingers crossed. With the injury problems we have already had you never know. Thanks for your opinion Texan279. :shades:

Yeah he started 14 games last season, but he had a nagging hernia he had to deal with for the last half of the season or so, I would think the hernia should be fine now.

With the competition at CB I don't see Garrett making the team. Both these signings mean absoluetly nothing.

The signing of K. Garrett and D. McCleon are for depth and to add veterans to the TC staff. We dont want guys like P-Buch getting so many reps that he starts to break down early or having guys like T. Williams run with the first team when he is not ready. They are veterans that have played this game and had some success. Both guys are small which is a bit annoying , but once the rust is off they can be effective in spot duty and preseason play. Saleem Rasheed is an athletic LB that played for the 49ers. The guy can run, but he is nothing overly impressive.

I think that Garret may have a shot...Our secondary doesn't have a lot of all world guys..I think that if he practices well they may consider keeping him around and atleast delegate him to practice squad...Our linebacking corp isn't the greatest either...

I am not sure i really get the point of making posts just to specifically say a guy is in camp just to fill a spot. I mean maybe i would understand if someone was getting all hyped about them. But to have the transaction posted, and then the very next post play the part of Captain Obvious and help out everyone on the board by letting them know they aren't going to be a starter. Is this not the offseason, and are these players now not part of the Texans team (now matter how short-lived it is), regardless it's not like many a player haven't been signed late in a team's training camp period to fill in a spot (fodder) and gone on to play a vital role for the team. It isn't likely but it's possible. In short, i see it all as Texan's news and don't see why it really contributes much to give one word or over generalized descriptions of brought in players.

P.S. - while Madden football ratings shouldn't be taken too seriously there is at least some research done on players and when a player is so obscure that you can't find more than one random mention of him in an ESPN article 2 years ago. well.....its better than nothing. not like anyone is placing bets on him based on his rating.

Chiefs | Garrett released
Wed, 26 Jul 2006 20:35:59 -0700

The Kansas City Chiefs have released CB Kevin Garrett.

Chiefs | K. Garrett contract update
Fri, 13 Jan 2006 19:15:28 -0800

Updating previous reports, Kansas City Chiefs CB Kevin Garrett signed a future two-year contract with base salaries of $385,000 (2006) and $460,000 (2007).

I personally thought that was interesting....signed for two years and then released 6 months later.

2. Saleem Rasheed, Alabama, 6-2 5/8, 229, 2nd: Third-year junior who declared for the draft. Very good athlete who will get selected fairly high, but some teams have huge concerns about his work ethic. “He’s lazy,” a linebackers coach for an NFC team said. “He has physical ability, no question, but you could even see in his workout he’s lazy. He didn’t want to finish his workout. He can’t do it every down in college, how’s he going to do it in the NFL? I looked at six tapes and wanted the kid to be good, and I didn’t see anything.”

Most of the information i found talked about his ahtleticism....but lack of strength and drive.

A lot of good info combined here.....http://spazioinwind.libero.it/SF49ERS/02draft_49ers_3.html

I think Smith was his coach his first year in San Fran. I know he wasn't his coach at Bama. As a Bama fan, Rasheed helped us land DeMeco Ryans. Thanks Saleem! Rasheed should have stayed for his Senior year but that is another story...
