I hope they sign him soon. I know his agent is equivelant to Scott Boras in MLB, but Mcnair can out smart that man. Scott Boras is such a :homer: .

From what I can tell, there can't be much to negotiate. All other picks are signed, so Winston gets whatever is left in the rookie pool. I would hope he'd see that he has a legitimate chance to be the starter at RT at some point this season, and that would motivate him to get into camp on time.

am betting is agent busy with his BIG NAME clients and knowing Winston will get less than Spencer (lower cut in percentage) is not motivating him to get a deal done OR idiot thinks he can do a holdout and Texans will pay through nose. NEXT QUESTION..................ROFLMAO:shoot:

That is probably what's going on, or Rick Smith or someone else who would be involved in contract preparation from the Texans FO is taking advantage
of getting in a vacation right becfore TC.
This is a slam dunk: we not only just completed the contract with the guy drafted imediately before Winston, he plays exactly the same position as Winston does. It couldn't get much more cut and dried than that as far as Winstons deal goes.

I'd pay him exactly what I paid Spencer. This is a situation (one after the other) where the picks are interchangeable. I'd give him what we gave Spencer and call it a day.

I tend to agree with you, in that when I've heard the question asked why was one taken before the other, I have never really heard or read anything clarifying or justifying the order.

I wonder if it was more of a contractual thing in taking Spencer before Winston knowing that Winston was the higher profile of the two prior to the draft...this way Spencer may be happier with a bit less whereas if Winston was taken first he would drive his price up resulting in Spencers price going up...anyone follow?

I don't think it was some kind of random thing at all, because I'd be surprised
if they didn't truely value Spencer more than Winston, if only marginally.
And I'd be very surprised if their contracts were equal because it would be an inequity for Spencer. IMO, one reason they took Spencer first was that they wanted him secured in the event they got a chance to trade their other pick in the third round which would probably mean they'd miss Winston.

I'm tracking and a very good point. I'm against giving him the same amount. Be it a dollar less, it has to be less.

I think that is the whole break down on the contract talks, they don't play the same position. LTs get paid a whole lot more than RTs.

Well, this excites me. I still see Winston being our future LT and Spencer our RT or RG. I just can't see Spencer at LT, regardless of how hard I try.

I used to share that opinion, because Spencer is much more of a power guy and very raw so the responsibility of protecting the qb blind side seems like way too much to ask of him. However the more I read about the zone blocking scheme, Winston and his aibilty to move athelically laterally seems like a better fit on the right side. Power blockers, like Spencer are not normally on the left but Winston does not seem to have enough power to handle the top notch pass rushers that come from that side.

Maybe I read it wrong, but you have it backwards. The finese guy who has quick feet and top technique plays LT. The bigger, less agile, more of a mauling run blocking type tend to play RT. Spence is HUGE. I like the guy, and I know he is quick for his size, but I still cannot see Spencer ever being able to hold down the LT job with Freeny rushing against him every year. Winston is very quick, has a good strong hand punch, and is a top talent technique wise. He isn't small either, he is 310lbs, but Spencer still has like 50lbs on him, and that is just insane. The ability to move laterally is needed by all of our linemen, especially our guards, but that does not designate Winston for RT IMO.

And you will be proved correct this season barring injuries. I have said the same thing since draft day and just about everyone disagrees with me, which is fine.

I would think they'd have to be proven commodities in order to differentiate between LT and RT pay scales.:twocents:

Winston was still recovering from his injury last year. If you want to see true game footage of him, look at the year before, where he was one of the top LT's in the entire nation. Prior to his injury, he was rated ahead of Fergueson, McNiel, Justice...he was the top rated LT in the nation prior to his injury. The fact that he even played well enough to start last year at Miami is amazing. He will be fine and one of our biggest steals in our drafting history.

...also, on a side note, Ian Symonett from St. Pius X is now a LT at Miami. Local kid with so much upside its not even funny. The kid is HUGE! 6'10 330. I've worked in drills with him since I go to a school just down the street, but I'll be honest right now...NOBODY gets past him. He is a beast and a future 1st rounder draft pick.

CNNND, has some good info on
Winston & his injury.

I'm kinda thinking like you all. I.E. 1. the taking of Spencer ahead of Winston was not random 2. If Eric was 100% I'd agree he should be the OLT over Spencer. However, Sherman is good. I yeild to his judgement. 3. I don't want Pitts moved again.

And maybe that is the tangle. Sherman is tring to protect the knee one more season. Erick's camp wants OLT money. The Texan's want to hedge thier bets. I'm hoping Wand does regain his confidence and wins the postion out of camp.
However, I'm expecting Spencer to beat him out. Do you start two rookies on the o-line ? I don't think that's very likely. :twocents:

I'm watching the Kid from Texas,Adam Ulatoski .He can't even break the line up yet but he's very good. Southlake Carrol guy. Saw him Play Katy in the chapionship game a couple of years ago. Thanks for the heads up on Symonett.

If you're D'Brick Ferguson, OK. But IMO the Texans are far, far from settled as
to where either one of these guys ends up playing, other than it will be somewhere in the OL.
And as far as Winston playing LT over the longer term, most of the talk I've
heard is that Spencer is more likely to be there than Winston even though
Winston played that position exclusively at Miami (after he was converted from TE). And Winston is more likely to end up as a guard than Spencer, though both will probably be tackles in the NFL.

I give Spencer the nod as well being he is a former DT so he must play with some of that defensive mentality (aggressive against the bull rush & assorted spin moves ala Freeney). If I remember correctly was'nt he also noted to have one, if not the most strongest hand punches in the country?

With Wade gone I'd give Winston a 50/50 chance to be the Texans starting RT sometime this upcoming season. That would mean two rookies starting @ tackle, with a solid inside veteren rotation of Pitts, McKinney, Weigert and Flanagan.

Winston got $2,000 less in upfront money (signing bonus) than Spencer.

So, it was a fairly similar contract in terms of upfront money...Spencer got a little bit more since he was taken one slot before Winston.

Spencer's upfront money: $610,000

Winston's upfront money: $608,000

As training camp unfolds Spencer is going to surprise and amaze a lot of you with his quick feet and athleticism. The coaches have asked him to lose some weight however, so I am pumped to see him at the August 5th fans day out at Reliant. Winston is still getting over a sever knee injury he sustained way back in 2004. As he gets his strength back in that knee, and it ought to be pretty quick, you will see a much better player. But right now his best position will be the right side. As an aside, most people know that Winston was an All American TE at Midland Lee, but not too many know that Spencer was also a TE in H.S.

Thats another thing that has me excited about this guy! TE in H.S., DT as Fr and So, OG as a Jr, and LT as Sr. He moved around to wherever his team needed him, but he still hasn't mastered the position. He'll be dominant onces he learns the little things.

I'm excited to see both of these guys. I think out of the two, Spencer may be more likely to start at some point this year. Although he is more raw, he isn't coming off a major injury and his competition is not as good at LT as Winston's is at RT. At least that's my very early take. All of this is very fluid, and I think by next year, they both are likely to start, and may be our bookends for the next decade.

well we'll see how this all pans out, hopefully either of them can contribute in a timely manner. I am very interested in this offensive line as this has been the biggest thorn in our side since day one. Winston on paper seems like the better talent of the two, let's just see how this all comes out.

Just a note - he was "elite" around 330 lbs. before he put on his off-season weight. His diet will get him back to where he belongs.

Well, I know this one was a beast. It seems like we won the "Bush Bowl" about two years ago to me. I'm going into the season exhausted from the off-season debates.

I'd just like to see it all get started now.
