 Lions | Martz thinks Bradford can be No. 2 WR
Thu, 25 May 2006 19:53:02 -0700

Clark Judge, of SportsLine.com, reports Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz loves Lions WR Corey Bradford's speed and sees him as the team's No. 2 wide receiver.

YEA, good luck with that Martz!! Im sure all of Houston can agree in unison when it comes to "Stone Hands" Bradford that he isnt #2 quality by a long shot. Yes, he has speed, but when he drops passes (like on 4th down to continue a potential game winning drive vs Jacksonville), then theres really no point to this having all that speed. Are they really giving up on all those WR draft picks already too . . . ?

If Bradford is the 2nd best WR on that team, that is alot of wasted talent and money and draft picks. No wonder Harrington looked so bad :crutch:

Wow, wait until they get into games and he sees how many passes Bradford drops. He lost us one game last year by dropping that easy catch on 4th down right at the end, and if he is better than two of their three 1st round picks then they obviously made horrible choices with those picks and/or have given them 0 coaching the past few years. Isn't Kippy Brown the new WRs coach in Detroit too? Maybe he is pushing for Bradford a little to see him succeed.

What about all the bad routes he runs also that lead to interceptions.

A good QB such as Kitna will make any bad receiver look good. Did I just think that out loud? :tomato:

I still do not understand where this Bradford hands of stone thing comes from. The guy has fumbled THREE times in 105 games played. Sure he dropped some passes last season, but Andre Johnson wasn't out there looking like Randy Moss either. Fact is AJ tied for 18th in the AFC last season with 5 dropped passes in 13 games and Bradford wasn't even in the top 20 and he played in 16 games. Also AJ ranked #9 in the AFC last season in passes not caught with 51 passes not caught in 13 games, Bradford did not break the top 20 in 16 games played. Fact is Gaffney ranked #4 in the NFL in lowest dropped pass percentage with a dropped pass percentage of 1.5%, or 1 dropped pass out of 68 balls thrown to him, and he's not even with us anymore...

Lance Z this morning went off on this. It was pretty funny. Basically he said that if Martz says something like that, he needs to be immediately fired.

And went off on the riff about the only way it could be acceptable is if he went to management and said, "Hey, I am about to say something really stupid, but it is only for motivational purposes."

Andre Johnson - 114 targets, 63 receptions, 5 drops, 55 % caught
Corey Bradford - 66 targets, 34 receptions, 3 drops, 51% caught
Jabar Gaffney - 90 targets, 55 receptions, 3 drops, 61% caught

So Andre dropped 4.38% of his targets, Bradford 4.54% of his targets, and Gaffney 3.3% of his targets. All in all, there's isn't a huge difference considering the additional number of targets AJ received. The real difference is that Bradford just isn't the all-around athlete that AJ is and he's dropped a couple that were extremely noticeable. (like the TD drop)

Are you seriously taking stats this seriously? AJ got almost double the passes Bradford got, and had 1 sub par year. Bradford has made a name for himself in Houston dropping passes. Good luck Martz, you've got 3 WRs you need to worry about now!!

Being away from the local crowd, this was not the problem with Bradford. It is just my opinion ( so don't shoot ), but I think the fan center of mass opinion shifted negative from a few missed plays, much how Miller is shifted positive for one big made play.

The Houston offensive line for the past four years was never steady enough to hold a pocket 'long enough' to use Bradford's break away speed. The staff let him go not because of his lack of abilities, but because he is not a short break/quick WR that can get open quickly. ( which was part of our original plan getting cannon armed Carr and the OL set first )

I expect to see Kubiak use Mathis in the Bradford field stretching role. ( but he has to get defenses to believe Mathis can catch the ball )

Bradford drops a couple of passes that people remember then someone labels him hands of stone then half of the board starts calling him that. Just like when a player misses a few games in one season some label that player injury prone. Sure AJ got almost double the passes thrown to him than Bradford had, and had double the drops. I guess you should start calling AJ "hands of stone" also. One other thing, Bradford had 5 TD catches out of 34 receptions caompared to AJ's 2 TD's out of 63 receptions.

Don't compare Bradford's stats with AJ's. Bradford did not face double or tripe coverage like AJ. AJ played hurt and was obviously frustrated last year.

It looks to me like someone else was using a Lions thread to bash a Texans QB before it turned around the other way!

way to go Nate Mcmillan ... u draft WRs in the 1st round three times n a row and corey "hands of steel" bradford can be ur #2 WR. Happy to see a GM do a worse job than Casserly
Matt Millen...Isn't Nate McMillan a basketball coach? I know the name somehow...

Bradford is what Mathis will be in seven years without good coaching. Straight line fast guy who will make some big catches and outrun everyone, but no technical game. The 'stone hands' and 'hands of steel' tag is exaggerated and a convenient pile-on, and yes I've watched him and aware of what's said all the way back to GB.

He somehow managed to catch 130 balls here for 2000 yards and 18 TDs. Mediocre four-year numbers - not a legit #2 - but not a total slug either. Martz is probably looking at what Bradford did here back in '02 (45/700/6 -- almost legit #2 numbers as a #1) in a total crap offense filled with rookies and try to re-tap into some of that.

You are kidding, right? DOe snobody remember one of the announcers saying "You don't even have to guard Bradford; he guards himself!", after dropping three, THREE, THREE straight passes?!?! And then you have the ones where he undercuts his route and leads to a David Carr INTERCEPTION.

And those TD catches? You have to remember thatn at least 3 of those (I can't recall the other two: maybe they were good. I dunno) came in garbage time against the other team's second string D. You know, like when the Titans played us in our house? I remember that meaningless padded stats touchdown.

The only thing that motivates Rogers is getting a good deal on his sack of dope.

And if you could motivate him without a bong it wouldn't matter because he'd trip on an extension cord and miss the rest of the season with shattered ribs and a collapsed lung. Most guys have just one fatal flaw. Rogers has a pair. He's a stoner who's made of glass.

If he could manage to become an angry, loud complainer then he could add "locker room cancer" to the list and get the hat trick.

Hilarious. Martz should be hauled away in a straight jacket and admitted to the funny farm.

Bradford has very good straightline speed, but has bad hands, runs poor routes, doesn't sell fakes or set up DB's at all, is football stupid, and really doesn't seem to grasp the finer points of playing WR. If he is starting for any team, they are in trouble. He is a 4th WR who can stretch the field. Period.

Teams say a lot of things right now, we don't know if they're being serious with this rumor (in which case Bradford has two months to prove he's not a #2 WR) or whether they're just blowing smoke to either mislead other teams or try to inspire their other WRs. If the Lions want to make him their #2 guy then I say let them do it, maybe Martz can actually make something out of him or else he'll get himself in trouble in the process of finding that out.
