View Full Version : Best State in the Union

Hey I was just thinking about which state would be able to field the best football team.

I thought of this because of the State of Origing competition that runs in the NRL in Australia. Players represent the state in which they first played senior grade football.

Now if we took this idea to the NFL level, what state would be able to field the strongest team if they were put together based on who went to College in that state.

My first instinct is to think that Florida, Texas and California would dominate because of the big schools in these areas... maybe also Ohio, Michigan....

Thought that this would help fill in those days before the season starts.

Perhaps if people were keen we could list the starting offenses and defenses for some states and see who the consensus winner is.

I will do one when I get a chance.

FB Nicholas Luchey
WR Andre Johnson
WR Santana Moss
TE Jeremy Shockey
LT Bryant McKinnie
LG Zach Pillar
C Jeff Mitchell
RG Cooper Carlisle
RT Erik Winston

DE Alex Brown
DT William Joseph
DT Vince Wilfork
DE Jevon Kearse
OLB DJ Williams
MLB Ray Lewis
OLB Jonathon Vilma
CB Philip Buchanon
FS Ed Reed
SS Sean Taylor
CB Antrell Rolle

I am partial to Texas

Also, most of those players played college in Florida, but they are from somewhere else. I will have to look that up.

My original idea was representing the state they balled in. Mainly because it is easier and quicker to find a players College than hometown.

Are you seriously telling me that ALL-TIME there is not a better florida QB than Charlie Ward!?!?!

ARE YOU KIDDING!!

He didn't throw a pass in the NFL.

Lacking a QB is a major weakness.

Had to take a look at what the Wolverines/Spartans and co had to offer.

Mainly out of a desire to see a decent QB. Some gaps to fill here especially on defense. Good offense though

The nfl players site has a way to find players from a certain state...I got all the guys from TX, FL, and CA...then I copied the names of the players from the NFL stats page for each position...I wrote a quick little Excel VBA program to match names...in essence picking out the better players...CA has the most...followed by FL then TX....I still think TX is the best...state pride will not let me do anything else...I may make a list of my teams later...if anyone wants a gander let me know.

based on that list you can't make ANY argument for virginia whatsoever. i know you think michael vick can win the super bowl on a pop warner team, but this is ridiculous.

miami had a pretty good QB named jim kelly. charlie ward? c'mon.

I think that Florida produces the best NFL players. Miami is probably one of the best colleges for future NFL players. I'd have to go with Florida, but it may be because I'm a Hurricanes fan.

Seen several posts with Drew Brees on the Texas roster. He played college ball at Purdue; he did go to high school in Texas but I thought it was the college attended.

Yeah I just liked the idea of the state they grew up in...it is more interesting to me because of course places like florida and cali will do well with the college thing...great beaches, great weather, lots of ladies...course I prefer TX women myself...

Final AP rankings:

1. Texas
2. USC
3. Penn State
4. Ohio State
5. West Virginia
6. LSU
7. Virginia Tech
8. Alabama
9. Notre Dame
10. Georgia

21. Clemson
22. Oklahoma
23. Florida State
24. Nebraska

#22 Oklahoma is comprised of about 50% of players from Texas.
;)

Nice bowl game though. You put sophmore QB (at the time) Matt Flynn on the map. Not coincidentally, he's also from Texas (one of 20 players on LSU's roster from Texas). :D

Speaking of which, you could probably come up with a pretty good list of players from the state of Louisiana. Not the ones that just went to college there, but the ones from there.

There's been a lot of LA kids in Texas, even before the hurricane, so...yeah.

"Per capita", Louisiana puts more players in the NFL than any other state.
