View Full Version : When our defense plays the Titans

Now, the Titans are planning on installing a "Vince Young Package," one that would include the option and force opposing defenses to have to prepare for more than just Tennesee's basic offensive attack.

Behind the scenes, Titans coaches already have begun sifting through some of the various option options, pondering which to include for Young.

It would not be a difficult offense for Young to learn. At Texas, Young ran the "option read," in which he would watch the defensive end, then decide whether to hand the football to his running back or carry it himself. It is how he transformed himself into college football's most dangerous quarterback

Something tells me that if the option were going to be emensely successful, Vick would be running it just about every down.

That being said, if it IS successful, then I don't think we'll have to worry about Vince Young for too long...he may be tough but he's no David Carr!

Ooooo.......

I'm sure NFL defensive coordinators are shaking in their boots.

Try that stuff in the NFL and see where it gets you. The first time he gets drilled in the back by a blitzing corenerback from the blindside...or a rushing defender forces him to throw a risky ball rather than get speared in the chest by an NFL-caliber defender...then we'll see how effective and how often they call that particular package.

Bring it on. I'd love to see how well it works.

LOL, dude that is the most brain dead thing I have ever heard. Vince Young is better than Carr could ever dream of becoming. VY is better than Carr in every aspect. Carr has been a complete bust and thank god that Kubiak is here because he isnt married to Carr like Capers and Cass were. Kubiak will drop Carr like a bad habit once he sees how horrible of a QB Carr is. Everyone thinks they can fix a trainwreck but sometimes its best to give the loser the boot and find ourselves a new QB that doesnt suck so bad.

The reason you don't see the QB option in the NFL is the defenders tee off on the QB if he pitches it or not. Moon used to run that play, he stopped after taking several brutal hits one slicing open his chin.

That has always been the best way to stop the option. DE nails the QB whether he pitches the ball or not. Let the guys behind you worry about the RB.

First of all...the point I was making was that he can't be nearly as tough as David Carr...there's not a QB in the league that can claim that other than PERHAPS Brett Favre. But he hasn't taken as much of a beating as Carr.

Second of all...Carr hasn't put up bad numbers, he just hasn't produced. In fact, no QB would have produced with that offensive line...I don't care how fast he is.

Finally...Vince Young hasn't played a down in the NFL. Therefore, by DEFAULT, he cannot possibly be better than David Carr. Kubiak is the one who lobbied to KEEP Carr...not the other way around. And there's no way you can tell me Young's passing motion is better than Carr's. Everyone who knows anything about Vince Young knows that he has A LOT of work to do to get his passing up to the NFL level (As was the situation with Vick). We could argue about this all day, but you can't prove you're right anymore than anyone else can...

You might want to separate your lips from Vince's butt. I have a chainsaw if it will help.

It is just going to be a dog fight in the AFC South. Which is all I can say. 3 rivals we'll face every season at least twice. The 4th I guess depends on which season we play that particular division. No matter, I think that the Texans are going to be much improved team starting this upcoming seasonand great things are ahead for this franchise.

VY may be a great NFL QB in the future, and I hope he does well. Except for when he plays the Texans. Love the hometown guy, but that guy is playing for the division rival now. It's all good. Super Mario, D-Rob and co. will be ready for VY and the Titans.

it is possible that the Tacks coaches are adding the option in order to prove it to Vince that it doesn't work in the NFL. Or to use the first time Vince gets hit as an example as to why they don't run it in the NFL, with the reason being that they don't want to get their high-dollar QB hurt.

These types of plays will be great for sportscenter highlights, but if they want to be successful, they'll need to mix in some traditional QB duties (like drop backs and passing). VY will get slaughtered if this type of offense is the bread and butter. NFL defenders are too quick and defensive coordinators too crafty to allow a one dimensional offense to consistently produce.

After reading that I cant imagine.........I am just at a loss of words, can not see this "Texas Style" Package whatever work.
What Vince needs is a PA, roll out Offense That lets him throw the ball deep, that should be his package installed.
Get him on the corners and let him run and make plays with his legs (during a Pass).
In short I dont know what they are doing in Tennesse and I hope this will be a good thing for Vince cause if this Offense/Package that they are making up for him does not work then what?

Good Luck to him.

I was just a wee lad back then..... luv ya blue and all....... but I think the NFL goes to greater lengths nowadays, to protect the QB.

Behind the line of scrimmage, 2 steps....... it's roughing the passer......... 15 yards, automatic first down.

I bet there were a bunch of Pats fans saying the same thing about Bledsoe..... 8.... 9 yrs. and all. Hall of fame numbers, superbowl appearance, pro bowls..............

Then they replaced him with a 7th round pick....... kid got sacked 44 times that year........ won a superbowl too...... that ring on Drews fanger.... that's because of that kid, who probably couldn't do any better behind that line.

I was watching the NFL game of the week, earlier in the week. Buffalo vs Tennessee....... I could've sworn McNair ran the option once, out of all the plays they ran. He didn't pitch the ball though, didn't even look at his runner, so I guess that's why the announcers didn't say anything........ he just took it in for the score.

Just like the end around, or the reverse........ they don't have to run it but once, maybe twice a season....... heck, they are probably just leaking it now, so that the other team has to expect it.

If I were Vince's coach, I wouldn't do the option per se..... I've never thought of Vince, as an option quarterback......... ala Vick, Randall Cunningham. I'd do more like they did @ Texas. Lots of shotgun. & like Denver, a lot of rolling pockets....... bootlegs.... naked bootlegs......

As time goes by, move him a little less..... I'd be thinking 2 years, before he's a deadly pocket QB, who can still move........ ala McNabb..... But until then, it'd be nice to win some games.

34 posts? For your information I have posted much more than that but I had been banned for calling out homers like yourself a while back. I think Carr sucks and have since Day One. In over 4 years he has shown nothing to prove otherwise. I dont think 3 good quarters of play in 4 years is worth the blind allegiance that most of you show. But rather than slam posters who continue to act like sheep, I now slam the actual player that has been an abject failure and a wart on the arse of our franchise for over 4 years.

but whatever, keep being an automaton and praise Carr. but in my opinion the dude totally sucks, has no leadership, no pocket presence, and is a total failure as franchise QB. I dont know where to start with this one...

Point One - Taking sacks doesnt make you tough, it makes you a bad QB. Oh and for the millionth time, please dont compare Favre with Carr. That is just silly but par for the course for most Carr fans.

Point Two - Just because someone has taken a snap in the NFL doesnt make him a good QB or better than Vince. Vince is better than Carr in every aspect in my opinion. Go grab a dictionary and read the definition of 'opinion'.

Point Three - See Point 2. Merely taking snaps and being a failure in the NFL does not make you a good QB. It makes you a bad QB. Vince has been dominating the competition at every level ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD while Carr dominated a few workouts in Alabama and Indianapolis. He sure as hell wasnt drafted by what he did on the field because if he was, we would have never picked him at number one. Football isnt played in the weightroom or against a stopwatch (see Mario Williams stats and production in big games). It is played on a field where you have to have the intangibles...Carr doesnt even have much ability much less intangibles, leadership and moxie.

I didnt even say we needed to draft VY, I said he is a better QB than Carr. VY wouldnt have been a smart pick at #1 just like Mario wasnt a smart pick at #1....but please dont say a loser like Carr is better than a champion like Young...its like you dont even watch football and makes your opinion worth as much as Carr's record as a starter....

Carr has shown flashes.. Carr is finally given tools to work with unless you feel our OL,Bradford and our TE crew was NFL quality.

Carr was improving on every year that we have had him except for 2005 when the sack jumped up again.. offense was stagnant ..too many comeback routes, hitches that we couldn't get AJ open...

Is Carr ready for the probowl? no, is he ready for a week or two for AFC Offensive player of the week? potentually with moulds,AJ,Putzer,Joppru to help him out.. and the OL.. they give him time and maybe the game will finally slow down for him so he can look downfield instead of looking at the rush..

What are your expectations. Carr had a 3500 yd passing season the yr. before this. I mean just what do you expect the guy to do before you get off him. He's put together more than three quarters of good play by far. I find you bash on Carr simply because you don't like him. Quit treating everybody as if their opinion is stupid and yours isn't, they see something good while you see the worse. Carr isn't perfect and Vince is much farther away from perfection than Carr is. Oh and you can't answer the question honestly because their situations are so different. Young is going to play under Fisher a Proven HC. He'll be under a QB with some experience. McNair or Volek, oh and he's not going to start the first game of an expansion team.

wah wah wah..i hate Vince...wah wah wah...Carr is cute...wah wah wah...Fresno State?!? give me a break. All you guys who love your workout warriors really make me wonder if you guys even played a down of football in your life.

so i guess the fact that Carr may be more book smart than Young means Carr is a better QB. So I guess now football games are played in the weight room AND the classroom...I guess I should have studied more about Newton's Theory and maybe I would be considered a viable pro prospect by the minions on this board....

bottom line is Vince Young wins football games and Carr loses football games....i always thought the idea was to win football games....I guess its more important to some of you that your QB be a bookworm, underwear model, or holy roller. God forbid us having a QB that actually has played in big games and was a winner at every level of play....

whatever though, go buy your Carr jerseys....update your I Heart Carr website...I dont care...myself, I will be hoping for the best with what we got but I will never ever fall for the big lie that Carr is a good QB....

when Carr is selling insurance or modeling Fruit of the Loom in a year or two, just dont get angry when i give you a healthy portion of 'I TOLD YOU SO' but I am sure by then you will all have fallen off the carr bandwagon and changed your blind allegiance to Mario after he shows what a non-factor he will be in this league...last time I checked we dont play Duke or Wake Forest in Reliant Stadium...but if we did, YAHOOO Mario would rock...too bad its fantasy

I think when we play the Titans we will have a very stout defense. Week 7 will have given our players enough time to gell and become used to one another. They should successfully apply pressure to the Titans QB whoever it is and be a hard team to run on. We may not be a shutdown defense yet, but we have the foundation for a very solid defense in place. I also expect Mario to have 2 or more sacks against the Titans this season.

GO TEXANS!!!

Taking sacks doesn't make you a tough QB? Plenty of QB's in the league get sacked all the time and miss lots of games for it. And you seem to forget that 208 sacks doesn't count all the times Carr has been hit after getting rid of the ball.

Yes...being in the NFL already makes Carr better by default. If Vince Young is the demi-god you make him out to be, then let's just proclaim him the Super Bowl MVP already. Simply because it's your opinion doesn't mean you're right. In fact, you're far from it...

How has Carr been a failure? We had one bad year, that's it. If I remember correctly, last year about this time everyone was saying how great it was that we've continually improved.

If you want to compare college stats, then let's compare the last year of our franchise QB and your demi-god:

Vince Young: 3,036 yards passing, 26 touchdowns, 1 - 300 yard game, 325 Attempts, 10 Interceptions

David Carr: 4,839 yards passing, 46 touchdowns, 10 - 300 yard games, 533 Attempts, 9 Interceptions

Obviously Carr produced on the field. You're an idiot if you can't see that.

You should try SUPPORTING our team, rather than denouncing our franchise player and everything we've done in the past year or so. Young will do just as "bad' as Carr has in the past. All we have to do is use the formula Carolina and Tampa use twice a year to shut Vick down and make him ineffective. If you'd pull your head out of your butt long enough to actually watch Carr perform rather than watch for a flashy touchdown pass, then maybe you'd see what everyone else sees in him.

Vince Young is tall, dark, and handsome.

doug from the woodlandsI disagree greatly.

I feel as if Vince is a good-looking young man, but he is not handsome. Ricky Williams with his hippie-holistic beard, now that is a handsome gentleman.

In my personal opinion i feel Vince Young is gonna be a terror in the NFL and the thought that leads me to believe this is Tennessee already knows how to use him They have had steve Mcnair and have been successful with him all these years now they have a younger faster more talented version of him and Ladale White is a younger more talented version of Eddie George in my opinion

Now about David Carr i like him for his character i don't feel like he has played like a franchise quarterback but at the same time he hasn't had a fair chance so the verdict is still out on him i think this will be the first year that we can trully evaluate his play now that we have an offensive mastermind coaching him. Me personally i'll make my opinion of david Carr after this season

I agree with this completely. The only point I've been trying to make is that he's done well with what he's been given. John Elway and Brett Favre may have been able to do better, and I'm not trying to say he's that good. I just think he's good enough to lead us to where we all want to be.

spend less time trying to find meaning in a overrated movie like The Big Lebowski and more time watching Carr play. If you watched with an honest frame of mind and not blind loyalty, you would see the myriad of flaws that permeate his limited game.

Or you'd see a QB under a completely incompetent head coach, trying to do what his coach wants. And paying for it. And dusting himself off and getting back up again. Some people, like myself, see that as "character in the face of fire," and some people, such as yourself, just think he's a dope for it.

Face it, you can player-hate on Carr all you want...all it does is expose the pure fact that you desire for Carr to fail. And that places you pretty far down the totem pole of fandom in my book.

And don't wave your season tickets around like that entitles you to character assassinate a guy like Carr who has been as true to the Texans as you THINK you are. Because at the end of the day, the only way you win (with your mindset) is if Carr fails. You'll chuckle and actually find delight in another's calamity (I think the bible has something to say about people who take delight in another's calamity?)...and me? Well, I will wish that he had succeeded because it would have meant that our TEAM also succeeds. Escape that hangman's noose, if you can.

And another thing: Where have you been on this board since August of 2005, with all of about 35 posts? Now you get hammered and called out for your philosophy on things, and you yank out the "Season ticket holder since blah blah blah." You're a ticket holder and NOW you come on fire around here? Oh, yeah....when YOUR ideology is challenged, that's when you get to hitting the keyboard keys, eh?

Bigggggggggggggggggggggggg fan. I feel so small. Maybe I can find a stack of season tickets to stand on to make me feel taller. Keep rubbing your hands together and grinning when Carr throws an interception or gets sacked this season.

How I love it. The fact is, Carr and Young cannot be compared except for their college career numbers and as you can see, it looks like Carr has better numbers

The reason you don't see the QB option in the NFL is the defenders tee off on the QB if he pitches it or not. Moon used to run that play, he stopped after taking several brutal hits one slicing open his chin. It's also the reason you don't see it run that often in college anymore. Defenses are told the best way to stop the option is to clean the QB's clock on every play.

The "option" has basically three options: 1. FB Dive. 2. QB Keeper. 3. QB pitch to RB on sweep. The QB gets hit on every play except the FB dive, and usually he gets absolutely leveled on the sweep pitch. It takes its toll.

Like I always say when dealing with the option. Just hit the QB and make sure it hurts.

I really doubt they are gonna use the option Noem Chow can't be that dumb
i see more of a play action with the oppertunity to run if he sees the option of makeing a play with his feet kinda like the did with Steve Mcnair

wah wah wah..i hate Vince...wah wah wah...Carr is cute...wah wah wah...Fresno State?!? give me a break.

God forbid us having a QB that actually has played in big games and was a winner at every level of play....

whatever though, go buy your Carr jerseys....update your I Heart Carr website...I dont care...myself, I will be hoping for the best with what we got but I will never ever fall for the big lie that Carr is a good QB....

when Carr is selling insurance or modeling Fruit of the Loom in a year or two, just dont get angry when i give you a healthy portion of 'I TOLD YOU SO' but I am sure by then you will all have fallen off the carr bandwagon and changed your blind allegiance to Mario after he shows what a non-factor he will be in this league...last time I checked we dont play Duke or Wake Forest in Reliant Stadium...but if we did, YAHOOO Mario would rock...too bad its fantasy

doug from the woodlands

Um, Carr won in college too (as do most ALL QB's drafted)....VY hasnt played a down in the NFL, how can he have more wins than Carr??...step away from the pipe bro. Geez VY fans are obnoxious.

Everyone thinks they can fix a trainwreck but sometimes its best to give the loser the boot and find ourselves a new QB that doesnt suck so bad.

doug from the woodlands
remember this day at the end of the season when you try to talk about how great carr did. you take 70 sacks and live to tell about it. then do it for 3 years. ive never seen a tougher qb. give carr 2 seconds to throw, and 2 options to throw to and then judge him.

Are you a packer fan at all? Because my friends up here that are pack fans still love Favre for some reason. I honestly agree with you on everything about Favre.
