View Full Version : you might find theory interesting..(Mario-Bush Thread)

This is my basic conclustion after listening to interviews with McNair, Casserly, Williams, Williams Agent, Bush, Bush's Agent, New Orleans General Manager, and some converstion of Pat Kirwin and Gil Brant, and a few other tidbits in the media.

The Texans evaluated all the players and put equal grades on both Mario and Bush. They decided to go with Mario for the following reason, one of our biggest team needs is a pass rush, the DE position has a much longer career so the effects of this pick will last longer, easier to find backs than pass rushers. A star DE like Dwight Freeney can make a bigger impact on the game than a star Back like Edgerin James, and they are more rare.

With that said the Texans plan was to trade down get some picks and draft Mario Williams. Two problems:
#1 they had no trading partner
#2 They learned Mario was a favorite of many teams and was going to go second to New Orleans. So that means even a trade to the third or fourth position would have resulted in us missing both guys.

This is where it gets interesting. If you listen to all the interviews very closely, and I do, (I don't get as much Texans coverage as I like so when the topic comes up I hang on every word). There have been tons of hints. Some of the media guys with real football experience and front office experience have actually caught on to this...The Texans decided on Mario Williams a while ago. They kept the smoke screen of getting Vince Young or Reggie Bush going for a few reasons. The thought of getting Reggie Bush aided in aquiring talent like Eric Moulds. It gave the Texans a TON of national TV and Radio exposure, plus nonstop exposure in the local Houston market doing a normally quiet off season.

There is now speculation that the Texans were using Reggie Bush to get Mario Williams at both a low price and to commit before the draft. Not the other way around.

If you listened to the Interview with New Orleans GM on Sirius Radio it went something like this...
Radio guys: "Was this a christmas gift or what!?"
New Orleans GM: "We are happy."
Radio guys: "Tell us was it hard to turn down all the trade offers you got, from teams wanting Reggie Bush"
New Orleans GM: "We did not have a single serious trade offer."
Radio guys: "WoW! (followed by long moment of silence)..."Not one?"
New Orleans GM: "Not one."
Radio guys: "Can you believe the Texans passed on Reggie Bush."
New Orleans GM: "The Texans are getting unfairly critized. Williams is an amazing player and is going to do very well for them." (He sounded excited for the fans of N.O. but you could tell Super Mario was their guy.)
Radio guys: "Are you concerned about being able to sign Reggie Bush."
New Orleans GM: "Very concerned. It isn't going to be easy."

things the make you go Hmmmmmmmmm

The more I thought of it after Williams was signed the more it made sense that Bush was a smokescreen all along.

I like it...the other thing that bothers me is that if the Jets were such a perfect trade partner for us, why wouldn't they be a better fit with New Orleans? The Saints need lots of players and the Jets had a ton of picks.

This was by far the craziest draft I have ever seen, you would have thought everyone had their pick signed to a contract before they picked em because the rounds just went lightening fast unlike 2 years ago where everyone was down to the wire with their picks... I was pleased with our picks as well as the organization we showed byt picking them rather quickly...

the 2 OL in the 3rd were fabulous... I bet David Carr got a chubby when we drafted winston and spencer.

If the Texans had the 2 graded equally, the more the reason to take Reggie.
With Reggie you get buzz, you get identity, you get on the map.
Nah, there are reasons we will probably never know why Mario is
coming to Houston instead of Reggie. Something may have been said or not said that really might have put McNair off. It may sound silly, juvenile, pettie, etc. but could very well have happened.
No matter now, we still had a good day Saturday in a very strong Draft and we're in a good position to rebound this Fall.

I think we get on the map by beating Indy and Jacksonville , along with Dallas, and Washington ... I think were we make the biggest noise in dec 17 @ New England. Winning the tough games will do wonders for us

And yes instant national recognition and curiosity will be if we took Bush, but somehow I am not sure. Maybe it is me, but I don't really care to follow New Orleans just because of Bush, I mean I didn't when they had Ricky

What THREE changes would you make to improve this team next year.

#1 Pass protection. (If this isn't on your list you haven't been paying attention).
I think we need to upgrade TWO players on this O-line. It doesn't have to be high priced talent but it needs to be talent. Most importantly I think the coaching needs to instill a new attitude and a totally new mentality in our O-line.

#2 A Well rounded Tight End.
I would like to see a big, fast, athletic, tight end. One who can block well and make key pass reception. Most importantly we need a guy who will open up the middle and make it a little easier for our Wide Recievers to get seperation. I feel with the right player not only will the Tight End have good numbers but he will make the rest of the recieving core that much better.

#3 An Effective Pass rush. We have done a very poor job of getting to the opposing team's QB. We need a pass rushing DE or a LB that can wreak havoc and make the opposing team's QB sweat.

I would have put a coaching change on this list but thanks to Mr. McNair that is already done. A hybrid 4-3 / 3-4 defense is going to be interesting and it will be fun to see a new Offensive playbook that doesn't focus on keeping it close, and to see a defense that isn't focus on bending but not breaking.

I intentionally didn't list specific players names because I think it is irrelevant. We need certain jobs done, and we need the right players to do those jobs. Who they are dosen't matter to me as long as they get the job done.

This should be a fun offseason.

hmmm the plot thickens!!! I wonder if my house is bugged. I'll have look tonight.

1 thing I really think is wierd,

Bush got the whole Subway Sandwich commercial deal, Where Mario Williams (a former subway employee) did not get an advertising deal...

You would think they would have jumped all over this by now...

Yep, they should show Bush serving Williams a Sub. Something to the affect I have to work because I took a pay cut...............

Interesting topic, LBC_Justin, and I think it has merit.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Kubiak wanted Williams all along. We've talked at length in the forum how we didn't really need Reggie Bush, but because he's this amazing talent, you can't pass on him. In addition, Kubiak comes from a system that produces a solid running game with decent backs (and DD is above decent).

The media (and fans) have been in love with Bush. But who's to say that Kubiak just wasn't interested to begin with? It is much more practical to draft to your needs, and Kubiak strikes me as a coach that sees the big picture of creating a winning team.

Then there's the idea of just taking BPA, which can still be seen either way in this case.

The point I want to make here is that I kind of feel like just taking BPA is kind of silly. I think the best way to draft is to take a look at all your team needs and then take the BPA WHO FITS A TEAM NEED. I have to admit that that theory lands us none other than Mario Wiliams. That's why I was only a little upset with the first pick to begin with. Now, I suppose I'm happy with it, but I also feel a little like I'm rationalizing because I WANT to be happy. We'll see.

edit: You make several very good points, LBC_Justine, especially the part about Bush helping us get Eric Moulds.
