Title say all... Kubiak said both players will be tackles in the NFL, and thinks Spencer will begin on the left and Winston on the right.According to Kubiak hes gonna put Spencer at LT and Winston at RT.Guess Mckinney will still be our RG.

Ive never met David Carr, but I can tell you that my main objective is going to be to make sure that the running backs have great holes to run through, that the quarterback has unbelievable time to throw, and that the receivers can have time to catch the ball." - Eric Winston

That's interesting and very contrary to the way I thought things would turn out...

Spencer's supposed weakness is speed rushers, which he'll see plenty of on the left side, and Winston's weakness is supposed to be drive blockers, which he'll see a lot of on the right side...

Very interesting indeed...

Anybody else think that this could be Kubiak's way of improving our young bookends' weaknesses? Winston can't help but get stronger if he's forced to block against a strong LE like Weaver, and Spencer will become better at handling speed rushers since he's going to be going against Super Mario and Babin or Peek...

maybe thats why you start two rookie tackles.

Seth Wand, Fred Weary, Zach Weigert, Todd Wade, Todd Washington, Eric Winston

If we could find a way to start 5 of them it would be like the Texans answer to the Killer B's. I'm not sure what sound effect they would use, though.

A bunch of stories in the chronic (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/3829927.html)today....

...Spencer, 6-4 and 352 pounds, is slated to compete with Seth Wand for the starting job at left tackle. Winston, 6-6 and 310 pounds, should compete with Zach Wiegert and Todd Wade at right tackle.

"Good things come to those who wait," coach Gary Kubiak said after the Texans' third-round selections were announced. "This is awesome. I can't believe it panned out this way."

Pitts back to guard

In anticipation of being able to improve their personnel at tackle through the draft, the Texans already had Chester Pitts working at left guard, where he started throughout the 2004 season.

Steve McKinney is moving to right guard, where he has never played. He spent the first four years of his career at left guard with the Indianapolis Colts before spending four years at center for the Texans. Free-agent signee Mike Flanagan is the Texans' new center.

"Every coach has their opinion of where they think your best position is and where you can contribute most," Pitts said. "That's what the new staff feels will be best. It's known that I prefer to play tackle, but I will play guard.

"I expect us to get better this year, especially because I believe Kubiak's (zone-blocking) system is solid and effective. I believe everybody will be better, and things will go better for all of us."

After focusing on the defensive side of the ball in the first two rounds by selecting North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams No. 1 overall and Alabama outside linebacker DeMeco Ryans with the 33rd pick, the Texans gave their offense a boost in round three.

As soon as Spencer and Winston heard their names called, they realized they were going to a team that could instantly use their help. It was the ideal scenario for both.

"As an offensive lineman, if you're focused on anything else other than making sure the dirt stays off your quarterback, then you're probably playing the wrong position," Winston said. "I've never met David Carr, but I can tell you that my main objective is going to be to make sure that the running backs have great holes to run through, that the quarterback has unbelievable time to throw, and that the receivers can have time to catch the ball."...

Sorry (not really) but the more time reflecting on this draft, I think it was the smarter move in the long term. As mentioned numerous times this was the correct "football decision".

Winston - Pitts - Ferguson - McKinney - Spencer

is that the starting line?

maybe thats why you start two rookie tackles. The best thing rookie tackles are good: drive killing penalties. They will probably sit and learn for a year with a little spot duty.

One of them may beat out Wand, however.

you know I hope this guy has mean streak. I think this is the first time I have heard a lineman say this (I realize I may have missed a few thousand quotes or two in 4 years). I used to get tired of the nonchallant ways the linemen would walk back to the huddle after Carr is picking himself off of the turf (not saying Carr didn't put himself in the position of a sack or two), but actually hearing a linemen come in with that attitude pleases me

From what I have read, he does have a mean streak and.. yes...it is VERY good to hear an O-lineman have that attitude. Hope they all have it or catch it.

I think this verifies what most of us were thinking last year, that the team had lost faith in Pendry.

at least we finally drafted some offensive linemen for a change instead of taking rejects from other teams. this group can't help but get better. flanigan was a good pick-up and although i would have rather had justice at the 33rd pick, the two 3rd rounders should evolve into solid starter. cross your fingers david...

Kubiak is going to put him at LT. Winston at RT. Go to yahoo sports, there is a video for all of the players, including Spencer playing LT, for the Panthers. Hes very athletic for a huge guy. I wont say he is a lock for LT, but he can play guard, and both tackle spots.

Larry Allen was a very good tackle early in his career. He filled in for Erik Williams after the car accident in 94-95. As he aged, Allen needed a little more protection on his outside. The reason Allen didn't play tackle more is that Dallas had Tuinei and Erik Williams in those spots.

Kubiak on Spencer and Winston (this is on our site)

(on if he expects both players to be tackles) “Yes I do. We will put one on the left. I don’t want to get too ahead of myself, but I think we’ll put Charles on the left to start and Eric on the right and we will go from there. The thing about both of them is that I think they can both go inside and play. You see them as tackles and that is the way we studied them and that is the way we plan on getting started with them and we’ll get started from them and we’ll go from there. They are going to play a long time in this league.”

(on competing for the starting job) “Oh yes. Everybody on our football team will be competing for a starting job. I told you guys from the start that is one of my biggest goals this offseason was to create competition on this football team. There is no reason for anybody to have a comfort zone right now. We all have to go out there and earn our keep and we’ll start doing that here in a couple weeks.”
...
(on how Spencer and Winston fit into the zone blocking) “They both fit in. Eric being a former tight end it goes without saying the way he can move around. Charles is a bigger man, but when you watch him play in the box and you see him do the type of things we want him to do, run and cut and do the those types of things, there is no doubt in my mind he’ll fit in our system very well.

(on Zach Wiegert at guard) “No, Zach will be our right tackle as we start our camps and we expect him to play very well there I think he played very well for this team when he was playing outside last year.”

(on Fred Weary playing right guard) “Actually I know we haven’t talked about this much but we plan on moving Chester (Pitts) back inside and playing Chester inside. This gives us some flexibility to do that and still have great competition on our football team.”

(on if Spencer and Winston's lack of experience on offensive line hurts them) “Oh yes. Anytime you bring a young kid in here and everything we’re going to throw at them that concerns you. But both these young men in talking to them and our study of them, we feel like they’ll catch up with us very fast. We think that they’ll compete at a high level to play on our football team very quick.”

Taking Winston is the best pic of the draft, IMO. He will be in the competition for right tackle, but I don't think it'll be his. His job will be to practice and learn the offense this year, which will do wonders for his injury. Even less stress this year should do wonders to affect his performance.

This year, the line will not change that much. Rarely does an o-line include first-year rookies. I could see Ferguson starting - maybe - but likely our line this year will not change from where it is right now:

Wand -- Pitts -- Flanigan -- McKinney -- Weigert

As a former defensive lineman you would expect someone who is agressive and has some good feet in order to carry that weight to the QB in a hurry. Initially I expected him to be a guard, but I may have watched 99.99% less tape on him than the staff so I will definetly defer to better judgment.

Spencer looks like a BEAST. I was hoping that we would end up with Winston all along. Imagine rotating him in as an pass eligible Tackle on the goal line. 6'7 & 320 with HANDS? Carr should be able to hit that in his sleep.
